Every year, when the sects hold their trials, not one disciple of our sect can be bothered to go. The last time we actually sent someone to compete was back when the sect was first founded. Everyone out there laughs at us, the Alchemy Sect, saying we're all good-for-nothings who can't even raise a single decent disciple. So the Grandmaster lost his temper. Briefly. And booted me, a kid who'd just turned four, straight off to the trial grounds. Except a sweet mouth is the only skill I've got. The very first task of the trials was to go up the cliff face and harvest serpent lotus. I can't do sword-flight, so I just squatted at the foot of the mountain and played in the mud. Every sect disciple who passed had already decided: 【That useless little runt. Once she ends up in a snake's belly, this stops being fun.】 Only that one disciple from the Azure Cloud Sect tucked me into her bundle and coaxed me softly, 【Hold on tight, little sweet-bun. I'll keep you safe and get you out of here.】 I hugged her obediently, though I couldn't figure it out. Aren't all the monsters in this mountain on friendly terms with me? They'd never have the heart to eat me…… 1 It turned out the snake demon on the cliff face had just eaten two disciples. The other sect disciples decided to wait until nightfall to make their move. Which meant that all day, they were stuck at the foot of the mountain with me, watching me play in the mud. The big sister who'd just promised to protect me was named Katherine Kaufman. The Grandmaster taught me that once you leave home, you have to hold your head high. So I stuck out my chest and introduced myself, 【My name is… is Pearl!……】 Katherine's hand was soft and sweet-smelling when she patted my head, nothing like those rough oaf senior disciples back at the sect. She smiled and asked who gave me such a cute name. I gave a sly little giggle. 【The Grandmaster picked it. He says a lowly name makes a kid easier to raise.】 She shook her head and said it didn't sound like a lowly name at all. I hadn't blushed or stumbled once telling it, but I really couldn't bring myself to admit I'd lied. There was no way I could say my name wasn't Pearl at all. It was Piglet. My master named me Piglet, hoping I'd one day grow up big and sturdy like a fat little hog…… But Katherine here was a head disciple of the Azure Cloud Sect. Not being able to do sword-flight was embarrassing enough already. I couldn't very well let my name be an embarrassment too. Otherwise how was I, the great Piglet King, supposed to run this whole demon mountain with her at my side? Katherine handed me a flatbread biscuit and told me earnestly, 【Little sweet-bun, tonight, no matter what you see, stay hidden in the bundle and don't make a sound.】 【And if you get really scared, just shut your eyes and eat your biscuit, all right?】 I nodded hard and answered sweetly. Katherine's bundle really was packed with flatbread biscuits, and she was even willing to let me eat as many as I wanted. She said her own grandmaster had prepared them all in advance. Then I looked at myself. Empty-handed, dumped onto the trial grounds the moment I woke up. I glanced back, and my own Grandmaster had long since dusted off his rear and slipped away without a trace. No wonder everyone out there curses my master for being useless. Hmph, I want to curse him too! Some grandmaster he is. Old and shameless, that's what. Right as I was thinking it, the back of my neck suddenly went all itchy. I reached up, and my hand came away covered in blood. I got so scared my legs went weak. 【Mama, there's a big fat black bug crawling on my back, this big, help!】 Mike Swanson of the Frostmist Sect, hiding not far off, laughed out loud. Holding the hex-worm he'd bred himself, he actually stepped forward and said, brazen as anything, 【Quit screaming, you useless little runt.】 【Once Katherine Kaufman's busy dealing with the demon beast, she won't have a spare moment for you anyway.】 【You're going to die either way, so you may as well be a nice blood bag for my hex-worm.】 Katherine was just about to step in and teach him a lesson. Then a streak of bright yellow shot over out of nowhere and swallowed that big black bug down in a single gulp. I was thrilled, and hurried to say hello. 【Auntie June Newman! You came to save me!】 Auntie June is the best bug-finder on the whole demon mountain. One year there was a famine, and every bird on the mountain was so starved it could barely fly. She walked across a dozen mountains and, by sheer stubbornness, found a whole worm valley, and fed all the other birds until their beaks dripped. From that day on, she earned the title of Fowl Queen. But that reeking hex-breeder Mike actually had the nerve to start cursing. 【You wretched hen! I spent ten years breeding that hex-worm, and you just swallow it, like that?】 June cocked her head, opened her beak, and spat the dead worm right back out onto his face, whole and untouched. She clucked and squawked for a good while, then had me pass along a message. 【Auntie June says you don't know the first thing about breeding worms. You raised it so old the meat's gone tough, she can't even chew it!】 The man in front of me flushed with rage and shot right back, 【A stinking pheasant isn't a phoenix. How is she even fit to eat my hex-worm?】 Terrified, I quickly clapped my hands over June's ears and scolded him. 【What are you doing? Auntie June hates it most of all when people compare her to a phoenix.】 【Besides, Auntie June's feathers are big and glossy, and her cry is loud and lovely too. She's the prettiest pheasant I've ever seen!】 June, who a moment ago had wanted nothing more than to fly out and peck Mike to death, went all poised and dignified the instant she heard it. She rolled her eyes at Mike, then led me and Katherine off to a corner to talk business. With great mystery, I fished out the elixir pills I'd just rolled up. I wrapped them all together and hung them around June's neck. Katherine stared, stunned, and pointed at the little bundle of dark round pills. 【Piggy, weren't you just playing in the mud?】 I felt a little smug. 【Of course not. These are digestion elixirs. Auntie June's always constipated, so she has to take them on schedule every month.】 We are the Alchemy Sect, after all. Whenever the Grandmaster had nothing better to do, he'd toss me into the mountains to practice, and the rule was I had to cure a thousand patients before I turned four. So I come to this place all the time. Soon June let out a long cry toward the mountaintop. An immortal crane flew down, dozens of stalks of serpent lotus clutched in its beak. Like I was presenting a treasure, I stuffed the whole lot into Katherine's arms. 【Here, Auntie June knew we wanted serpent lotus, so she went straight over and stripped every last flower off Grandpa Serpent.】 【These flowers can count as payment for the biscuits.】

Lily Galloway of the Beast-Taming Sect arrived late. Her sect were the best there were at bending spirit-beasts to their will, and they took the top prize at the trials year after year, so she looked down on everyone. I hadn't guessed she was Mike Swanson's sworn partner. Word was, the moment she heard June Newman had eaten his hex-worm, she took it badly. She wove a spell-sign, and June whipped around and came diving straight at me, beak first. Katherine snatched me up, leapt into the air, and landed right behind Lily, her blade pressed to Lily's throat. "Your sect taught you beast-taming so you could hurt the innocent?" Seeing June, old as she was, knock herself out cold against the stone for no reason at all, I got so mad I chimed right in. "That's right! Bullying a four-year-old, and you're not even ashamed!" Lily wasn't ashamed. She was proud of it. She was sure Katherine wouldn't dare strike a killing blow, and she even pressed half a step forward. "So what if I kill this little beast?" "The Alchemy Sect threw a four-year-old into the trials. That alone means they don't care whether she lives or dies." "My darling Mike is above lifting a hand against you women, but his hex-worm was destroyed because of you. Getting even for him is only right and fair!" With that, she wove another spell-sign. The valley went silent for a few seconds. Then a thousand-year serpent demon, its mind gone, came barreling straight at us from far off. I looked closer. Wasn't that Grandpa Serpent? At first Katherine could just barely hold her own. But Lily played dirty. She used a command token to call up a thousand small snakes, and they closed in on us from every side. Disciples from the other sects wanted to step in and help, but she threatened them right out in the open. "Anyone who interferes is making an enemy of the Beast-Taming Sect." "After all, the one thing there's no shortage of around here right now is snake demons." At those words, no one dared move again. Katherine fought a bloody path clear, trying to carry me out. But Grandpa Serpent coiled around us and wouldn't let go, dragging us all the way back to his lair. We were about to be swallowed whole. Katherine pushed the sword hilt into my hands, meaning to fly me out on the blade. I shook my head as hard as I could and said I could think of something. But there was no time for her to listen. She flung me clear. "Piggy, I know you can talk to spirit-beasts, but Lily's got him under her control. There's no way out except to run!" "I'll hold it off as long as I can. Long enough to get you out..." Before she finished, she was swallowed in one gulp. I froze where I stood, my eyes gone red, and yet my feet didn't take a single step. Watching Grandpa Serpent thrash in his frenzy, I hurried and yelled at the top of my lungs. "Grandpa Serpent, if you don't wake up right now, I won't play matchmaker for you with Grandma Serpent over on Western Mountain anymore!" At that, Grandpa Serpent jerked to a stop and slowly turned his head to look at me. He seemed to have just woken, and he smiled at me. "Piggy! How did you— urk... blegh, ptooey!" Before he could finish, Grandpa Serpent nearly choked to death and spat Katherine right back out. He scratched his head with the tip of his tail, completely baffled. "Piggy, how did this little girl get stuck in my throat?" Seeing Katherine lying on the ground without a twitch, I thought she was dead and burst out wailing. Turned out my crying was so loud it actually woke my sister up. She opened her eyes and saw me red-eyed and hiccuping through my sobs, coiled up in the arms of a great serpent-demon king. She rolled to her feet at once and wove a spell-sign to come save me. But the next second, she just stared, dumbstruck. Grandpa Serpent didn't have a moment to spare for her. He nudged the top of my head gently with the tip of his tail, hurrying to soothe me. "Did Grandpa scare you just now?" "We can't let Grandma Serpent on Western Mountain hear about this, or she'll get the wrong idea and think I'm a wife-beating snake..." "There, there, shush now, Piggy's not scared."

When Grandpa Serpent learned it was Lily who had controlled him, that he'd nearly hurt us because of her, he flew into a rage. "That Beast-Taming Sect grows more lawless by the year." "Every year our beast-spirits fight their wars for them. Countless of us die. And now, instead of showing any gratitude, they turn around and use us to slaughter the innocent, and let us carry the blame for it too!" "Ah, Piglet, you children should leave as soon as you can." "I'm a serpent demon of ten thousand years. Even I can barely tear free and come back to my senses." "The ones with weaker spirit-power never wake at all. It's either you die, or they do..." Grandpa Serpent was right. This was exactly why the Alchemy Sect had never returned after the very first trial. To show off their sect's strength, they came to the demon mountain year after year, killing innocent beast-spirits to prove how mighty they were. As if the one who slew the beast-spirit with the highest spirit-power was the greatest of them all. But this valley was the beast-spirits' home. Barging into someone else's house to wreak havoc, then strutting about pleased with yourself, was truly shameless. My eyes darted around, and I fished the little booklet from my waist. "I know how to keep the beast-spirits from being controlled by them!" "They say a cure always grows within seven steps. This demon mountain has all kinds of rare herbs, not just beast-spirits!" "Eat them mixed the way my formula says, and everyone stays clear-headed, never at the Beast-Taming Sect's mercy again." Grandpa Serpent's eyes went wide, and he leaned in fast. "Little Piglet, is that really true?" I nodded hard, like a chick pecking at grain, utterly certain. Grandpa Serpent was overjoyed. "If that's really so, then it's a wonderful thing," he said happily. "Those sect youngsters love their contests, don't they? I'll send word by crane right now, have the whole demon mountain eat the herbs." "This time, let every beast-spirit face those sect rascals head-on and have a proper contest!" At that, I quietly let my gaze settle on Katherine. True, we were a step ahead now, having already claimed the rarest serpent lotus. But the second stage of the trial was to hunt a demon-beast and bring it back. And the higher the demon-beast's spirit-power, the better the chance of taking first place. I tugged at the hem of my clothes and stammered, "Katherine, this trial, could you maybe..." Before I could finish, Katherine, as if she'd read my mind all along, gave an easy smile. "It's only a sect trial." "Cultivation is meant to help the world and save people. Slaughtering the innocent is something I'd never stoop to, and never want to." "Piggy, as long as I keep you safe, that's enough." "Still, killing each other for it is no good in the end. How about we go talk them into changing the trial first?" With those words from Katherine, I had nothing left to worry about, and nodded at once. Night hadn't even fallen before disciples from every sect grew restless, sneaking up the mountain early in twos and threes to search for the serpent lotus. But they combed the whole cliff face and couldn't turn up a single bloom. Lily grew angry too, loosing her spirit-birds to search everywhere. They came back with nothing but grass roots and gravel in their beaks. The others traded uneasy looks, and someone ventured a guess. "Could it be the Azure Cloud Sect disciples and the little brat aren't dead after all, and they picked all the serpent lotus clean ahead of us?" Mike was the first to deny it. "Impossible. Our Lily is the strongest in the Beast-Taming Sect. That ten-thousand-year serpent demon would never have left them alive." And Lily's smile spread through the night. "Hmph. If the serpent lotus can't be found, so be it. I'll just kill that great serpent king of Southern Mountain and haul it back." "And while I'm at it, kill the queen serpent of Western Mountain too. One each for me and my dear Mike." The serpent king of Western Mountain, wasn't that the very Grandma Serpent Grandpa Serpent pined for day and night? That line struck Grandpa Serpent right where it hurt most. Even with Katherine and me clinging on to hold him back, Grandpa Serpent burst out cursing all the same. "Keep dreaming, and you'd dare lay a hand on my serpent lady." "Today I'll bury one of you on Southern Mountain and the other on Western Mountain!"

The moment I heard the noise, I told Grandpa Serpent not to do anything rash. Katherine gathered up every last serpent lotus and walked out to meet them, offering goodwill, urging them to change the way the contest was run. Seeing that she wasn't dead, the crowd looked a little startled. But the instant they heard us say no more needless slaughter of the beast-spirits, Mike smiled, cold and sinister. 【We slaughter the innocent? This is just the excuse you throw out because you can't win, isn't it?】 【Every sect here has killed demon-beasts. You two are the only ones protecting them. If that's not being a traitor, what is?】 Lily nodded along, and reached out to pull a spell-device from her sleeve. 【Today I'll teach you both a lesson on behalf of the whole sect, you traitors playing spokesman for a pack of demon-beasts!】 But when she wove her spell-signs to summon the beast-spirits the way she always had, this time she didn't call up so much as a single ant. The other sects' disciples traded glances and began muttering that Lily, head disciple of the Beast-Taming Sect, wasn't so impressive after all. To save face for his own partner, Mike charged straight at Katherine. But he was a foul hex-worm cultivator who played with bugs. How could he stand against the head disciple of the Azure Cloud Sect? A few exchanges in, he was driven back step by step, badly outmatched. Clutching his wound, Mike held out his hand and said that if she'd just hand over one serpent lotus so he had something to show, he'd concede. We believed him. Katherine held the serpent lotus out to him, and the instant he took it, she collapsed to the ground. A long while later, when she rose again, the sword in her hand was pointed at me. Grandpa Serpent stretched out and swept me behind him, grinding out through his teeth: 【Piglet, that scoundrel just planted a love-hex in your sister. She only listens to him now.】 【Using a dirty trick like that. He really is no kind of decent thing!】 Mike gave the order with a vicious grin: Katherine was to kill Grandpa Serpent first, then take her own life to atone. I threw myself forward without a thought and clung to her sleeve for dear life. The blade tipped aside, the edge dragging across my cheek, and warm blood ran down. I cried and begged her to wake up, but her eyes were full of struggle even as her body, like a puppet on strings, moved beyond her control, step by step toward Grandpa Serpent. Mike stood with his arms crossed, his whole face mocking. 【Crying like that over a little thing like this. This Alchemy Sect brat really is worthless.】 Before the words had even settled, the whole mountain shook. The disciples of every sect looked down and only then saw that even the demon-catching discs had gone haywire. It was then that Lily stepped forward to calm everyone. 【Don't be afraid. I wove my spell-signs to command the beasts earlier. They're probably just running late.】 【Everyone get ready. When the beast-spirits arrive, go ahead and take whichever ones catch your eye. They'll all go obediently to their deaths.】 But a deep, resonant voice rolled through the valley, asking, displeased: 【Piglet, who was it just now that called you worthless?】 I thought Grandpa Serpent had gone senile and couldn't even keep track of that. Until I realized the one who'd just spoken wasn't him at all. Grandpa and I looked at each other, and in that instant we both sucked in a cold breath. We were done for. That one had been woken up.
