My fiancée spent tens of millions to buy back a male merman. She built him a temperature-controlled pool and prepared the finest fresh ingredients for him every single day.
But that fish actually thought he was the man of the house.
While Marcia Summers was away on business, he ordered me out.
"Let me tell you the truth. Every night she brushes my scales by hand, inch by inch."
"The way she looks at me is full of possessiveness."
"I've already decided. When she comes back, I'll drink the special potion and shed my tail for her."
I gave him a helpless look and uninstalled the short-drama app off his phone.
"You're overthinking it. Marcia wouldn't spend that kind of money just to seduce a fish."
"Take my advice. Eat, drink, and stop knocking yourself out trying to please her, or you'll regret it."
He twisted my goodwill into jealousy and dug in on being the man of this house.
But what he didn't know was that Marcia messaged me a report every day:
"Honey, every one of his scales, I've scrubbed clean and sweet-smelling with the deodorizing body wash. When we make them into the merscale suit, you'll look so handsome in it."
"This fish is still too skinny, though. Let's fatten him up a while longer."
"Once he's plump, the merpearl inside him will be big and round, and it'll cure your migraines for good."

I really hadn't expected a fish could be a lovestruck fool too.
So I just took Marcia's messages and showed them to this dumb fish.
"Wake up. The only thing she's interested in is your scales and your merpearl."
But the dumb fish didn't believe it. He viciously flung my phone into the pool, flicked his gaudy, rainbow-colored tail, and looked thoroughly pleased with himself.
"I know what this is. You're afraid I'll replace you, so you're using cheap tricks to drive a wedge between us."
"But I'm one of a kind to Marcia. Unless she says it herself, I'll never believe a word of it."
I couldn't be bothered to argue. I just pulled out my tablet and called Marcia on video.
The moment she picked up, I said, with feeling:
"Tell this fish right now, out of your own mouth, why you're keeping him."
On the other end of the screen, Marcia waved at the dumb fish first, then blurted out:
"Because Bernie is more handsome than the other fish, of course."
"Be good, Bernie. Eat a few more octopus later. You have to get all round and chubby so you'll be cute."
I nearly blacked out.
So this was the exact line she'd been using all along to string one fish along.
Forget a fish. A dog would go into heat for three days if it heard that.
I started losing my temper at Marcia on the tablet.
"Marcia, have some decency. Playing with a fish's feelings like this."
Marcia pointed at herself, all innocence.
"Honey, I'm being wronged here…"
"The care manual says it. When a fish is unhappy, it drops scales."
"And if I told him straight that I'm keeping him to harvest his scales and dig out the pearl to cure your illness, wouldn't a fish that cost twenty million just drop dead on the spot from fright…"
She'd barely finished when that piece of seafood asked the handler for another fifty octopus.
Getting ready to film a video of himself eating obediently, to send to Marcia.
The corner of my mouth twitched. I lowered my head to the screen.
"Marcia, this twenty-million fish of yours polished off thirty pounds of tuna half an hour ago."
"At this rate, he won't die of fright. He'll burst from overeating first…"
Before I could finish, the tablet died and the screen went black.
I rubbed the space between my brows and watched Bernard Summers chewing away in front of his phone.
Forget it. Whatever he says these next few days, let him have it.
He's just a fish. Why should I bother arguing with him.
But I never imagined this guy would turn out to be a hardcore fish.
In the middle of the night, he actually dragged the handler into the pool and forced him to order a bottle of the special potion.
When I woke again, the pool water had gone a black-red, with a layer of broken scales floating on the surface.
And when he crawled out of the pool, barely alive.
His lower half had lost its tail. In its place was a pair of long legs.
Except his face was ghastly pale, and every step made him suck in a sharp breath of pain.
But when he saw the shock on my face, he seemed very satisfied.
So satisfied he forgot the pain entirely, and started talking big at the top of his voice:
"Before, I had no legs. It was awkward for Marcia when she wanted to get close to me."
"When she comes back and sees me like this, she'll be over the moon."
"Be smart. Get out on your own before she comes right out and says it herself."
Then he deliberately shoved me aside.
He dove headfirst into Marcia's bed, breathing in her scent, waiting eagerly for her to come home.
The handler stood in front of me, soaked through, head bowed in apology:
"Mr. Henson, that special potion has a side effect. If he doesn't get back in the water within seven days, his body will rupture and he'll die."
"Don't worry. He won't be able to make any real trouble."
I looked at the gray-white flecks of scale drifting in the pool and said nothing for a few seconds.
Marcia looks easygoing and laid-back, but she's actually deeply controlling.
Once she's decided on something, she won't tolerate the slightest deviation.
She came home right on time every day, scrubbing those scales so carefully all this time.
All so she could have that merscale suit custom-made for me, to leave us a memory that was ours alone.
And now the quality of those scales had ended up worse than what you'd scrape fresh off a fish at the market…
I sent Marcia a message right away:
"When you eat fish, do you like it grilled or steamed?"
Marcia fired back instantly:
"Honey, I like it braised, why?"
I sent a bitter-smiling emoji.
"Nothing. See for yourself when you get back…"

By the time I'd locked down the wedding venue and got home, the handler had already spent the whole day pleading with him.
But that fish flat-out refused to go back in the water. He'd made up his mind to be the man of the house.
To stake his claim, he'd smashed every wedding photo in the place.
The frame styles, the angles they sat at — Marcia had picked all of it out herself, piece by piece.
When he saw me walk back in, he jabbed a finger right in my face and started cursing.
【You did this on purpose, didn't you? You want to force me back into the water!】
【You're scared Marcia's going to fall head over heels for the way I look now, aren't you?】
I sighed and reached out to knock on that fish-brained head of his, IQ somewhere in the negatives.
【Listen to me, little seafood. Take some advice and get back in the water.】
【If Marcia finds out you're the one who wrecked those wedding photos, she really will turn you into fish head soup.】
I wasn't even scaring him.
Originally, once he'd let us pull his scales and take the pearl, Marcia and I were still going to put him back in the ocean to live out his days as a happy piece of seafood.
But no, he had to come ashore and play human for Marcia's sake, and now the disasters were stacking up one after another.
I already had my hands full with the wedding. I honestly didn't have the energy to keep cleaning up after him.
The handler was even worse off, spinning in circles, begging him.
【Big fish, I'm begging you! I'm just a poor working stiff, and you cost twenty million.】
【You've already ruined all your scales yourself. What am I supposed to pay them back with?】
【Get back in the water before Miss Summers comes home. There's still time for the scales to grow back.】
【After tonight, they'll never grow back at all!】
Bernard shoved the handler's hand away. No matter what, he wouldn't go back in the pool.
I sighed.
【Fine. The nice way isn't working, so we'll do it the hard way.】
The handler, who'd been pleading his heart out one second earlier, pulled the stun baton out of his pocket the next and dropped him clean out cold.
By the time he woke up, the fish pool had become a water cell.
Behind a wall of tempered glass, he looked ready to lunge out and tear me apart.
【The handler says you can only grow new scales in the water. It's the only way you'll live.】
【Also, I don't want your scales or your merpearl anymore. Once you've healed up, I'll send you back to the ocean.】
When he heard I meant to send him back to the ocean, he fought it even harder.
His hands slammed against the glass over and over, knuckles splitting open.
【Marcia brought me home. You have no right to send me away!】
The handler stamped his feet in a panic.
【Quit while you're ahead. The fish that get hauled up on land never get a chance to go back to the sea.】
【You should be thanking Miss Summers. She gave you a way to live!】
But nothing got through to him. He just kept bringing up how good Marcia had been to him.
【Marcia's the one who gave me my name. That makes me her fish!】
The name almost made me laugh out of sheer frustration.
Ever since Marcia named this fish Bernard.
His stares had gotten mushier by the day.
But that was all on Marcia and her big mouth.
She'd teased him that the name meant it: a man who envies lovers, not immortals — so happy in love he wouldn't trade it for heaven.
Only I knew just how twisted her naming really was.
That romantic gloss was never what she meant — "Bernie" was just her little pun on calling him her little seafood, damn it...
I couldn't bring myself to crush a fish's pride, so I stayed quiet.
But he only got more worked up.
【And if Marcia didn't care about me, why would she come tell me stories every single night?】
I rubbed at my brow, feeling the migraine start to climb back in from listening.
To knock some sense into him, I decided to spell out who Marcia really was.
【Buddy, haven't you noticed every story Marcia tells you ends in tragedy?】
【It's because the two of us made a bet. She bet that a fish's tears could turn into pearls.】
【That's the only reason she came running over day after day, making up stories to trick you into crying.】
Bernard froze for a beat, then shot back, refusing to take it.
【No way. You're just jealous that Marcia likes spending time with me more.】
【She comes to drink with me every day. It has to be because being with you is so boring she comes here to drown her sorrows.】
At that, I turned a suspicious look on the handler.
【Drinking? Fish can drink?】
The handler gave a pained smile and leaned close to my ear, lowering his voice.
【It's a deodorizing trick Miss Summers came up with herself.】
【What she was actually giving him to drink was... cooking wine.】
Now it was my turn to be dumbstruck.
After a couple of seconds to recover, I still couldn't hold it in.
【Hell! Is this Marcia even human?】
Bernard heard me and, furious, slammed his own head into the glass and knocked himself out again.
Right before he blacked out, he was still muttering.
【Don't you dare curse Marcia. She's madly in love with me...】

Three in the morning. I got up to find painkillers and ran straight into the handler, still keeping watch by the pool, quietly tidying up.
He knew Marcia had bought this fish mostly to harvest the merpearl for my migraines.
When he saw the pills in my hand, he hesitated, then ventured carefully:
"Mr. Henson, why don't I go ahead and take the merpearl to cure you?"
I swallowed the pills and waved him off.
"Forget it. Taking the pearl has to hurt him plenty."
"Besides, I already said I'd let him go back to the sea. Bad to go back on my word."
There was another reason I didn't say out loud.
I was afraid this overgrown seafood would start blubbering again, crying that I was bullying him while Marcia was away.
Sea creatures already have bigger voices than people.
Let him wail all night, and I could kiss sleep goodbye.
I was still thinking that when I noticed the pool had gone wrong somehow, too quiet.
I looked over. The fish pool was empty.
"Where's that seafood?"
Something dropped in my chest as I caught the handler's shifty look.
Like a schoolboy who'd done something wrong, he pointed a finger toward the shadows in the corner.
"Mr. Henson, I'm not trying to go against you on purpose."
"But he didn't grow any new scales, and today he smashed into the glass again and tore his skin open."
"I had to fish him out and disinfect him first, or he'd have died. And then forget the merpearl, we wouldn't even have a whole fish left..."
Only then did I breathe out, and I told him again and again it was fine.
The handler Marcia had hired had over a decade of experience.
Running into a stinking fish like this one counted as the biggest Waterloo of his career.
But as long as the fish didn't die, it wasn't a big deal.
Still, I couldn't just dust off my hands and go back to bed, leaving the handler alone to clean up the mess.
But I never once imagined that in this life I'd be crouched on the floor in the dead of night, dabbing antiseptic on a fish.
By the time we finished the tenth bottle, I was tired enough to start swearing.
At the bottom of it all, everything these past few days was the fault of Marcia's foolish little mouth.
I yanked out my phone, ready to call her.
I wanted to tell her to get back here fast and break up with this big idiot fish to his face, or I'd raise hell.
Turned out her phone was off.
I was about to fire off a barrage of messages when the handler suddenly looked at me, his face grave:
"Mr. Henson, this fish seems to be... pregnant."
第4章
My hand jerked. I thought I'd misheard.
Then I gave a halfhearted little laugh.
I told the handler he had quite the sense of humor, cracking jokes at this hour of the night.
But he pressed his ear back against the big seafood's belly, listened carefully, and said with total certainty:
【In my experience, this fish is pregnant.】
【And…probably got pregnant right around the time Miss Summers first bought it.】
In that instant I turned to stone.
Countless terrible images came flooding into my head, one after another.
Marcia and a fish? When? How was that even possible?!
No, wait. Who's pregnant? This male merman?!
The handler nodded gravely and explained:
【That's right. Among merfolk, the males are the ones who carry on the line.】
What pulled my thoughts back was the big idiot fish, who'd just woken up.
He'd caught that last part by pure chance, and let out a shrill, ear-splitting shriek.
【You mean I finally have Marcia's flesh and blood inside me?】
【Hurry, give me the phone, I have to tell Marcia the good news!】
His eyes locked onto the phone on the table.
And with that eerie gait, like a rat that had swallowed poison and hadn't quite died yet, he shuffled toward it one step at a time.
Sweat pouring down my face, I clamped my hand over his.
【Big idiot fish, calm down first.】
【Marcia doesn't seem like that kind of two-timing woman, so the baby inside you isn't necessarily hers.】
【Back in the sea, did you have an ex-girlfriend or anything?】
I tried hard to look composed, but inside I was already a total mess.
The big idiot fish just flung my hand off, all guarded, the corner of his mouth curving into a victorious arc:
【What, do you finally believe now that the one Marcia loves is me?】
【Now that you know we've got the fruit of our love, I hope you'll know your place and get lost, fast.】
I drew my hand back, embarrassed, but I still forced myself to keep pressing, awkward as it was:
【Man, I'm honestly not trying to stir up trouble, and I'm not jealous either.】
【Just tell me, how exactly did you two…um…do that?】
The moment the words left my mouth, the room went so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.
His face flushed bright red, his eyes darting away:
【None of your business!】
I couldn't get an answer out of him, but I could hardly just pretend nothing had happened and go back to sleep.
So I turned and asked the handler:
【How about we get a vet to take a look?】
The second he heard the word "vet," the big idiot fish flew into a panic.
【Not a chance! I am not getting neutered!】
He bit down hard on my arm, then shoved me straight into the fish tank.
The handler jumped in after me to save me.
But how could a man in the water ever match a fish?
Bernard flung out ropes of seaweed and tied us up tight, then dumped us into the storage room like packages being shipped off.
Before he shut the door, he leaned against the frame with a cold smile:
【I figure that even if I chased you off, you still wouldn't give up on Marcia.】
【So let's wait for Marcia to come home, and I'll let you see with your own eyes just how much she can't live without me.】
I wanted to tell him to get back in the water, fast, that it was his only chance to stay alive.
But I opened my mouth and not a sound came out.
God, had I left my vocal cords behind in the water?
Seeing the terror on my face, the handler dragged himself over with the last of his strength and forced out an explanation:
【Once a fish bites you, the fish venom kicks in, and you can't speak for at least half a month.】
Soon enough, the handler went silent too.
I looked down and only then noticed blood seeping out from his backside.
I struggled in the storage room until I was completely worn out.
Just as I was about to give up, I heard a door open in the distance, along with Marcia's sneaky little laugh.
【Sweet, sweet hubby, I'm home early!】
【Where's our chubby little fish? How are those scales coming along?】
Hearing Marcia's cursed racket, Bernard was of course the first to rush out.
Through the crack in the storage room door, I watched him walk toward her all on his own, with everything he had.
He was still lurching and staggering.
But in his eyes, he was probably the very picture of dashing charm.
In that moment, Marcia froze.
The air went solid for a few seconds, and all that came out was one blurted question:
【Huh? Where are your scales?】
