To give my daughter, born allergic to UV light, a happy childhood, I spared no expense and had a top-of-the-line protective suit custom-made for her.
My mother-in-law claimed her grandson Fergus Martinez had the same condition, and my husband Dirk James decided on his own that Fergus would come stay with us over summer break, and that we might as well have a protective suit made for him too.
I had no objection. But once summer break ended, Dirk decided on his own again that Fergus should stay and go to school here.
He even took the spot in the school-district home I had set aside specifically for my daughter, forcing her to commute out of district for school.
When I confronted him about it, he brushed it off.
"An aunt is a mother too. You have the means to give Fergus a leg up, so don't be so petty about every little thing."
My daughter, afraid we'd fight, told me sweetly that it was fine, so for the sake of peace in the family, I bit my tongue.
I never imagined Dirk would push it even further. He confiscated my daughter's protective suit, then said, with a straight face, as if it were perfectly reasonable,
"Girls get married off sooner or later. Daddy's just helping you let go of things early."
My daughter ran to me in tears to tell on him, and this time I wasn't holding back. I screamed at him: "Dirk, I want a divorce!"
"Right now, this instant, take Fergus and get out of my mansion!"
"...
Miranda, do you have any idea how much damage it does to a child when you scream like that? Apologize to Fergus, now."
His brow was drawn tight, his hands clamped over Fergus's ears as he ordered me.
My mother-in-law glared at me, stone-faced and displeased, her voice dripping with mockery: "Miranda, I don't mean to lecture you, but you really do spoil that Tammy Abbott girl rotten."
"Dirk took away her suit for her own good, worried she'd keep running off to play and let her studies go to waste. How can you go throwing around a word like divorce?"
"Back when Fergus came to live here and go to school here, you didn't have a single objection. So why are you being so small-minded now?"
At that, my mother-in-law actually spat on the floor at me.
"You're just faking that big-hearted act. The truth is you're jealous my daughter could give birth to a son."
"Let me tell you something. Fergus is the root of our James family. If anyone's getting out, it's you, and you can take Tammy with you. My son and my grandson can't put up with that kind of hardship."
My daughter's eyes were red from crying, her little hands clutching my collar tight as she said, carefully, "Mommy, it's all my fault."
"Tammy doesn't want you to suffer, Mommy."
Tears fell from her eyes one after another, and my heart twisted in pain while the fury climbed higher and higher.
I'd told Dirk before that I didn't want him or his mother treating Fergus and Tammy differently.
Dirk had held me close and solemnly promised me he'd treat them the same.
I'd believed him, and the only one who got hurt was my daughter.
It wasn't enough that Fergus was enjoying the resources that should have been Tammy's. Now they even wanted to drive out Tammy, the little mistress of this house.
It was because my temper was too good, because I'd given Dirk too much face, that he'd lost track of who outranked whom.
In our three years together before marriage, Dirk had done everything I asked. When his parents pressed him about marriage, I made the firm decision to take him in as a live-in husband under my family's name.
The first year of marriage, he was the same as he'd always been, until I gave birth to Tammy, and there was a faint change in him.
That same year, my sister-in-law gave birth to Fergus, and the change in him became obvious.
Using the excuse that an uncle should look after his nephew, he sent my sister-in-law money and supplies, and even sent his mother out to the countryside to care for her in person.
When my best friend found out, she kindly warned me: "Miranda, that sister-in-law of yours, she's not some mistress your husband's keeping out in the countryside, is she?"
"That's an awful lot of devotion for a brother to his sister. And the two of them don't even look much alike."
I've always had a decent sense for risk. I tested him more than once, and I ruled out my friend's suspicion.
But the way Dirk treated Fergus and my daughter now had me starting to doubt his relationship with Fergus all over again.
Look closely, and Fergus resembled Dirk sixty, seventy percent of the way.
Dirk and his mother had always said a nephew takes after his uncle, but was that really it?
I patted my daughter's back gently, soothing her in a low voice: "Tammy, you did nothing wrong. This is your home."
"With Mommy here, you won't have to suffer either."
I looked coldly at Dirk. "So you think the ones who should get out are Tammy and me too?"
Dirk's tone was displeased, his voice cold.
"Miranda Fox, do you really have to be this petty about everything? My mother's getting on in years and she's not educated. She only wants to protect Fergus. It's not like she's actually telling you to leave."
"You're the one who wanted Fergus gone without any regard for face. That's the only reason my mother said what she said."
The man in front of me now was a stranger, so much a stranger it felt like I was meeting him for the first time.
But this mansion was the twentieth birthday gift my parents gave me. It belonged to me alone, and I had every right to throw them out.

"Leave now, or do I call the police and have them drag you out?"
My tone left no room for argument. Dirk glared at me, jaw clenched, and it took him a long moment to force out a single sentence.
"Miranda, are you really going to make an ugly scene over this?"
"This is a small thing."
I said it word by word. "It isn't small to me. And the divorce is happening."
Fergus broke into loud sobbing, wailing, "Uncle, I don't want to leave. I don't want to go."
Doris scooped Fergus up, aching over him, cooing "my darling," and yet when she looked at me it was with an expression that said she wanted to peel the skin off me.
"Miranda, I'll assume you're just throwing a fit because you're in a mood today. I'll take Fergus out to stay somewhere for the night."
"When I get back, I hope you'll have realized your mistake."
Dirk took Fergus from Doris's arms and walked out without looking back, without a single glance at his daughter.
Doris said, gloating, "A woman shouldn't push her luck. Otherwise, once you're divorced, who's going to want a secondhand woman like you?"
Then she planted her hands on her hips and called to me, "Miranda, go peel me an apple."
I gave her a cool glance and turned straight to Mr. Stanton. "Stanton, get their things packed within half an hour and throw them out."
Half an hour later, Doris and the three of them, luggage and all, were driven out of the mansion.
She stood at the door, seething, cursing at the top of her lungs.
"Miranda, you vicious daughter-in-law. You're nothing next to Isabel. Not one shred of respect for your elders."
"I'm calling my son right now. He'll deal with you."
I let out a cold laugh. "Even if he comes, he'll be shown the door too. My parents bought this mansion for me. Your son has no claim to any of it."
Her face went blank, but her mouth still wouldn't quit.
"Miranda, you throw your own mother-in-law out on the street, that's elder abuse. I'll expose you online."
"Go ahead." I asked her calmly, "Is Isabel really your daughter?"
She guiltily avoided our eyes, her voice shooting up all at once.
"Of course Isabel is my daughter! What are you being so paranoid about? My son treats you so well."
The way she gave herself away only made me colder inside.
"She'd better be your daughter. If she turns out to be something else, every one of you James people will pay for it."
I shut the mansion door, and the moment I turned, I contacted a professional DNA testing team to come to the mansion and collect samples.

The ones who arrived before the testing team were Dirk and his younger sister, Isabel James.
Isabel wore a long white dress, the picture of innocence and pitiful charm.
She hid behind Dirk, her eyes rimmed red, stammering, "Miranda… Mom said you… you think Dirk and I have something improper between us."
She choked on a sob, tears spilling as she accused me of shaming her.
"How could you think that of Dirk and me?"
"I got pregnant before marriage and had Fergus because I trusted the wrong man. It has nothing to do with Dirk. Please, don't misunderstand us."
"Fergus and Dirk can't be ruined by rumors like this. If you don't believe me, I'll take Fergus and leave."
Dirk wrapped an arm around her shoulder, aching for her, and roared at me, "Miranda Fox! Apologize to Isabel right now!"
"She's a single mother. How can you spread such an outrageous lie?"
I let none of their emotion sweep me along. Calmly, I said, "Then let's test your DNA and Fergus's."
Dirk's face went cold, his voice pushing back in anger. "This is absurd. Who ever heard of an uncle and a nephew getting a DNA test? Haven't you made enough of a fool of yourself for one day?"
Eight years of marriage, and I saw the guilt in him at a glance.
I watched him without a flicker, and asked evenly, "If Fergus isn't your son, what are you so panicked about?"
He seemed to lose his grip, his shout at me louder than before.
"Which eye of yours saw me panic? I'm angry, because you can't watch your mouth, because you're talking nonsense! You're impossible!"
I took his accusation in silence, my gaze drifting past to Isabel, standing behind him with her head bowed.
Dirk instantly stepped in to block my line of sight. "What are you looking at?"
"Nothing. Just thinking about how much Fergus looks like the two of you. Brother and sister."
I leaned deliberately on those last words, brother and sister. Dirk's brow knotted tight, and behind him Isabel broke into sobs.
"Miranda, what did I ever do to you, for you to treat me like this?"
"I know I shouldn't lean on my brother and Mom the way I do—a single mother who got pregnant before marriage. It's normal for you to resent me. But you can't let your dislike of me spill onto Dirk and Mom too. They've been so good to you. How can you bear it?"
Good to me?
While we were dating, Dirk really was good to me. Otherwise I never would have taken him in as a live-in husband.
The first year after the wedding, Dirk and my mother-in-law treated me well too.
But their kindness curdled the moment I gave birth to Tammy.
I looked at them with a cold smile and said quietly, "In the face of a lie, the mercy you're talking about is just cruelty on your part."
"Whether you like it or not, this DNA test is happening. I've already contacted a professional testing team."
I glanced at my watch.
"They should be here any minute."

"You crazy woman! You actually called in a testing team. How dare you?"
"I refuse to do a DNA test. Fergus and I are just uncle and nephew. There's none of the filthy nonsense you're accusing me of. Don't you dare slander me."
Veins stood out on Dirk's temples as he barked at me.
"Miranda Fox, call them right now and send that testing team home."
"Ma'am, the testing team is here."
Mr. Stanton's calm voice dropped the whole living room into silence.
Panic flickered across Dirk's and Isabel's faces at the same moment, and Isabel tugged anxiously at his sleeve.
"What do we do now?"
Dirk's expression was ugly, but he held it together far better than Isabel.
"I'll go tell them to leave."
"This is my house. You don't get to throw out my guests."
I said it coldly.
He stared at me, his face hard, his voice colder than mine.
"Miranda, you may want a divorce, but right now we're still married."
"Oh? And so what? This is my house."
His face darkened further, and he ground out through clenched teeth, "So it's your house. I'm your legal husband. I have the right to make decisions for you."
"Dirk, you think far too highly of yourself. I'm not compromising for you on anything ever again."
Meaning: he had no right to decide anything for me.
He caught it, and his face went uglier still, fists clenched, looking like he wanted to tear me apart and swallow me whole.
I simply ignored him and turned to Mr. Stanton. "Stanton, let them in."
"Wait!"
Dirk stopped me again.
I looked at him, wary.
His face full of humiliation, he said, "A test like that isn't good for Fergus. Send them away. I agree to the divorce."
"Give me the divorce agreement, and I'll sign. Once the cooling-off period is over, we'll go finalize it."
I said nothing, and he went on. "I'll write you a pledge. If I break the terms, I'll not only leave with nothing, I'll sign over every asset in my name to you."
"You were always going to leave with nothing in a divorce."
I reminded him coldly.
His face got worse, but he didn't dare voice the anger. Instead he switched to a gentle, reasoning tone.
"Miranda, you're the CEO of Fox Group. If you push this so hard and word gets out, it won't look good for you either. Why do this to a child?"
"That we can't make it work is between us. It has nothing to do with the kid. Think about Tammy. If she were treated this way, could you stand it?"
Of course I couldn't stand it.
Tammy was my whole heart.
The thought of my daughter softened something in me.
"Fine. We'll do it your way."
"Stanton, let them leave. I'll wire their company the fee later."
Dirk signed the divorce agreement in a fury and hurried out with Isabel.
I knew he'd gone to check whether the testing team had really left.
But I always finish what I start.
This team was gone, yes. I'd already hired another one, a professional DNA testing outfit.
