Early one morning, a woman broke into my home. Her face was ruined, one eye blind, one leg dragging behind her.
"Your life's about to be over, and you still have the appetite for a breakfast sandwich!"
She snatched the sandwich out of my hand, ground it under her heel, and screamed at me. "Do not become the legal representative of Gilbert's company! Otherwise this Friday, when the company blows up over your best friend Nanette Summers selling substandard food, you will take the fall for all of it!"
"Jordan Gilbert won't lift a finger for you. The one he really loves is Nanette Summers!"
"The lottery ticket you buy tomorrow, don't give it to Jordan Gilbert! That ticket is going to win the twenty-million-dollar jackpot!"
I froze. "Who are you? Why are you telling me all this?"
The woman bared her neck, showing the same birthmark I had, and gave a wretched smile. "I'm you, eight years from now!"
...
Something in my head went blank with a low hum.
Eight years from now, I was this wrecked? Barely even looked human anymore?
But Jordan and Nanette and I had grown up together. Twenty-five years of it.
Jordan had promised me we'd file for our marriage license this Friday.
They wouldn't stab me in the back. They couldn't.
"That computer on the desk, the one Jordan Gilbert gave you, right? It's actually Nanette Summers's secondhand castoff."
The woman finished speaking, opened the computer, keyed in the password like she'd done it a thousand times, and started clicking through folder after folder, like they'd never end.
At last she pulled up a photo of Nanette Summers.
I stared at the screen, and suddenly I couldn't quite catch my breath, like a great stone was pressing down on my chest.
Yesterday, when Jordan brought the computer over, he'd said he opened it up to check it first.
I'd believed him.
I never imagined it was Nanette's throwaway.
And she'd deliberately hidden a photo of herself inside it, mocking me for being too stupid, too slow to ever find it.
So this love, this friendship, all twenty-five years of it, only I had ever taken it for real.
Buzz, buzz!
Right then, Jordan called. "Martha Henson, come over to Nanette's place, sign the legal rep contract, and then let's all go try that new seafood place that just opened!"
"Oh, and it's rush hour, lots of traffic. Drive safe."
I answered and got ready to leave.
But the woman grabbed hold of me.
"You're sure you want to go?"
"Don't worry. I know exactly what to do."
I smiled at her.
When I got to Nanette's place and pushed the door open, the first thing I saw was Nanette in a little short skirt, perched on the table right in front of Jordan.
She was spooning ice cream into his mouth, the tip of her foot pressed against his arm.
It hit me all at once.
Nanette had always been like this around Jordan, no sense of decorum, not the slightest worry about flashing him.
And Jordan had never once kept his distance.
I'd just trusted them too much. The three of us had grown up together, so I'd never given it a second thought.
"Martha."
The moment Nanette saw me, she hopped off the table, rushed over, and threw her arms around me. "It's been three whole days, I've missed you to death, mwah mwah mwah..."
She always liked to cling to me like this.
People outside used to say we were closer than blood sisters.
"You must be tired. Sit, sit."
Jordan pulled out a chair for me, thoughtful as always. "I got breakfast ready for you."
Mango cupcakes, my favorite, and the yogurt I always drank.
I felt strangely dazed.
If I hadn't seen the future me.
If I hadn't seen that photo of Nanette inside the computer.
Maybe I'd still be sunk deep in the happiness they'd built for me.
"Martha."
"Here's the agreement. Once you sign, you'll be the company's legal representative from here on out."
I'd barely gotten two bites of cake in before Jordan slid a contract across to me.
Nanette held out a pen right on cue.
The two of them were smiling as gently as they always had.
But my skin crawled. I picked up the agreement, opened it, and my eyes narrowed. "Why is everything blank except the line for the signature?"
"Didn't have time to fill it in. You sign first, we'll add the rest later."
Jordan explained.
"Oh, come on, just sign it. We've known each other twenty-five years, been friends since we were kids. You think we'd do anything to hurt you? Be the legal rep and you won't have to lift a finger, you'll get a twenty percent stake!"
Nanette urged me, smiling.
Wouldn't hurt me? Right.
The way I saw it, they meant to pick me clean.
I glanced over at Nanette. "If there's so much in it for you, why don't you become the legal representative?"

After a short silence in the room, Jordan frowned. "Martha, you're going too far."
"There can only be one legal representative. Nanette was being kind, letting you have it."
"And instead of thanking her, you stand there sniping like you think we're out to rob you. Is that fun for you?"
I'd only asked one question, and he'd jumped straight to Nanette's defense.
He really was in a rush.
"All right, all right. This was on us, we handled it badly." Nanette shot Jordan a look, then turned and explained to me, "Martha, I'm not the type who's cut out for the good life. I just want to clock in and earn my paycheck."
"Sign once the contract's drawn up properly."
"Come on, let's clean up and go get some seafood."
The temper Jordan had shown a second ago evaporated on the spot, and he apologized to me. "Sorry, Martha. I got worked up back there."
I didn't say anything, but it dredged up all the times we'd fought before.
Last time it was the air conditioning. I wanted it at 77, Jordan insisted on 78, nagging on and on about how I wasted money on the electric bill.
He only apologized to me after Nanette spoke up.
It seemed to go that way every single time.
So what did that make me? Just another piece in the little game the two of them played.
We reached the mall with the seafood restaurant.
"Let's buy some scratch-off tickets! See which of the three of us has the best luck."
Nanette suggested it.
"Sure."
Jordan agreed at once.
But something in me went taut, every nerve on edge, as I remembered what I'd said to myself eight years from now.
【Don't give the tickets to Jordan. There's a twenty-million prize!】
"Give me a hundred of them!"
Nanette left the clerk stunned, making him confirm it several times over.
Jordan nudged me with his elbow. "Martha, go pay. We're a couple, we can't make single little Nanette foot the bill."
"It's not easy for her, on her own."
I'd heard that kind of line countless times.
And I'd believed it.
Looking at it now, it just meant spending my own money to keep the two of them happy.
This time, I paid again.
Because hidden in there was the prize that would change my fate.
Just like before. I paid, but I got no chance to scratch anything. Jordan and Nanette bent over the tickets, scratching away with real enthusiasm.
Their luck was genuinely awful, though. They scratched through more than half and won nothing.
In the end Nanette tossed the tickets aside. "I'm done, this is boring."
"Oh, there's a bridal shop over there!"
And with that she grabbed Jordan and dragged him inside.
I didn't follow. I kept my head down and scratched the tickets, all the way to the last one.
The twenty-million prize finally came up.
My first instinct was to share the good news, but when I turned my head, I saw Jordan standing in front of the mirror with Nanette, who was wearing a wedding dress.
Both of them wearing happy smiles.
Exactly like a couple about to walk down the aisle.
I didn't interrupt them. I quietly claimed the prize, asked the shop to hold the announcement until seven days later, then turned and left.
Back home, the version of me from eight years later was nowhere to be found.
I was still puzzling over it when Jordan's message came through. 【Where did you go? How'd you just disappear? Nanette got all worried.】
【A little tired. Came home to rest.】
I replied.
Jordan went quiet after that. He was probably secretly relieved I wasn't there, so he and Nanette could have their time alone.
All afternoon.
I looked at apartments, and at the same time reached out to a number of professionals, asking about how to put on an art show.
That evening.
Jordan came over and pulled out a jewelry box. He opened it to a necklace.
"Nanette and I picked it out for you together."
It was a style I'd wanted, but had never let myself buy for the longest time.
"You were really off today. Jealous? Was it because I went dress shopping with Nanette?"
"She just wanted to try them on. We're all good friends. Don't be so petty about it."

Honestly.
I wanted to ask him if it was normal for a man with a fiancée to leave her sitting off to the side while he helped another woman try on wedding dresses.
But the words got as far as my mouth and I swallowed them, saying instead, "No. I've just been worn out from painting lately."
"Good. As long as you're not jealous."
Jordan gave a little smile. "Come by my office tomorrow morning and sign the legal representative contract."
He kissed my forehead, turned, and left.
I sat in the living room holding the necklace, staring at nothing.
Then the me from eight years later rushed in again.
"Martha Henson, wake up! Or your creditors will break your legs, gouge out your eyes, cut your face open piece by piece! And your parents will burn to death!"
She snatched the jewelry box with the necklace inside and stabbed at it wildly with a pair of scissors.
A stitched little doll dropped out of the bottom.
My name was carved on the front.
On the back it read: *Drain away your luck, die, die, die!*
The handwriting was Nanette Summers's.
My scalp went numb. White in the face, I slid to the floor.
The best friend who'd clung to me for twenty-five years.
Hated me this much.
The boyfriend who'd claimed to love me for twenty-five years.
Had set his whole mind on using me as the one who'd take the fall.
My future self crouched down slowly, held me tight, and patted my back.
She started to sing the song I loved most.
Tears slid down.
I knew.
Me and myself.
We were the only ones who'd truly live and die together.
……
The next morning, my future self was gone again.
Jordan sent a message: *Martha, I have to go away on business. I've had someone leave the contract on the desk for you.*
*Sign it and slip it into the bottom drawer.*
Since he wanted my signature on that contract so badly.
I'd play along and turn it against him.
I went to the office at Gilbert's company, and sure enough, a legal representative contract was sitting on the desk.
Along with a cup of the yogurt I liked.
Just then, voices drifted in from outside.
"Did you see Manager Summers's posts? She and Mr. Gilbert went to the beach to shoot wedding photos."
"Wait, doesn't Mr. Gilbert have a girlfriend?"
"You just don't get it. Every one of these bosses plays around, one worse than the next."
The post had never shown up in my feed.
Nanette must have blocked me.
They'd probably been flaunting their romance behind my back for a while, and I'd had no idea.
Buzz, buzz.
Right then, Jordan called. "Martha, did you sign the contract?"
"Not yet."
I paused, then asked on purpose, "I'm running a fever. Where are you? Can you come be with me?"
"I'm swamped over here, can't get away. Sign the contract and get yourself to a doctor."
Every third word out of Jordan's mouth was that contract.
Clearly terrified his little fall guy might slip away.
"Swamped? Then why did I hear you and Nanette are off shooting wedding photos?"
My voice came out cold.
The line went silent for a few seconds before Jordan spoke again. "You know how Nanette is against marriage. She just wanted wedding photos as a keepsake. I didn't mention it because I was afraid you'd read too much into it."
"Once you and I register on Friday, we'll go take our own wedding photos too."
It was a clumsy excuse.
I couldn't even be bothered to call it out. "Fine. I understand," I said.
I hung up.
Then Nanette called. "Martha, I don't mean anything by it, it's just friends helping friends. Please don't misunderstand, don't read into it!"
"I'm not reading into it."
At my answer, Nanette let out a breath of relief. "I knew you were the best. We'll always be sisters. Love you, mwah!"
I picked up the pen, signed the contract with a cold smile, and put it in the drawer.
"Jordan Gilbert. Nanette Summers."
"When the company blows up on Friday, you'll get to see the surprise I've prepared. Enjoy it."

Over the next few days, Jordan stayed busy shooting wedding photos with Nanette.
From the beach to the mountaintop.
From sunrise to sunset.
Every kind of romance, checked off one by one.
I stayed busy putting together my art show and welcoming a fresh start.
Thursday night.
Jordan finally stirred again, sending one message: *Ten tomorrow morning, meet me outside the county records office. Dress nice.*
Friday.
I stood outside the county records office, watching couples walk in and out smiling, watching others part in mutual disgust.
Ten o'clock.
Jordan showed up.
He rushed over and said in a panic, "Nanette was cutting costs for the company on the procurement side, so she sold off a batch of old stock and low-grade products. Someone reported it."
"Go turn yourself in to the authorities, now!"
I'd braced for it, but hearing something this absurd still put a weight on my chest.
"Nanette did it. Why should I turn myself in?"
I asked.
"Because you're the company's legal representative! And her best friend!"
Jordan frowned, impatient. "Nanette's cried easily since she was little, she can't take that kind of hardship…"
"So I can take it?"
I cut in.
"You're tougher. Once this is over, we'll go get married."
Jordan answered without a second's thought.
That flat, resolute look in his eyes.
Left me with nothing to say.
Beep, beep!
Right then, a dozen or so cars pulled up.
Jordan's eyelid twitched wildly. He said to me, "Remember what I just told you."
"It doesn't matter if you don't want to. The legal representative on file is you."
"Whatever the liability, you're the one who bears it!"
And with that, he turned and ran.
Left me standing there alone at the door.
The dozen-odd cars stopped outside the county records office, and a whole swarm of people poured out and came straight at me.
"You're Martha Henson, right?"
"Pay up!"
"Or we tear your face off!"
Some of them were seething; others held their phones up high.
"I don't work at Gilbert's company. Why come after me?"
I didn't run. If anything, I was perfectly calm.
"Because you're the company's legal representative! They're gone now, so you're the one on the hook."
"No money today, and you're not going anywhere!"
Their tempers climbed higher.
One older woman had already rolled up her sleeves, ready to yank me by the hair.
"You may have this wrong. I'm not the legal representative of Gilbert's company."
I shook my head.
"Bullsh*t!"
"We've got the contract right here. How could there be a mistake?"
The man leading them said coldly.
To make me take the fall for Nanette, Jordan had actually handed the contract out.
I let out a soft laugh. "Have any of you actually opened it and looked? Are you sure the legal representative is Martha Henson?"
The man in front froze for a second, then hurriedly flipped the contract open to the signature page.
The others crowded in too.
There, on the signature line, was written: *Captain Underpants!*
