_Leah's POV_ Today was my eighteenth birthday. For most werewolves, it is the day we look forward to our entire lives; the day we first shift into our wolf. It is supposed to be magical, exciting, and life-changing. But for me, it was just another day. I was Leah, the omega, the one no one cared about. I was an orphan. I lost my parents when I was young in an accident. This only made things worse. I was used to feeling alone, forgotten by everyone in Alpha Kayden’s pack. Everyone treated me lowly because I was an omega. I had to do all the chores, clean, cook, serve, and take care of the pack house. The pack members barely noticed me unless they needed something. Their eyes were always filled with pity or, worse, disdain. But I had gotten used to it. It didn’t matter how they treated me. I found my happiness in the little things. And today, even if no one remembered it was my birthday, I held onto the thought that tonight I would shift for the first time. That was enough to keep me going. I headed to the kitchen early in the morning to prepare breakfast for Alpha Kayden. He liked pancakes, and they had to be perfect. I was focused, flipping the pancakes just the way he liked them, when Selena, the Alpha’s girlfriend, walked in. She was beautiful, confident, and everyone in the pack admired her. But to me, she was a nightmare. "Make me a coffee," she demanded, her voice sharp. I quickly moved to prepare her coffee. I handed her the cup, hoping it would be to her liking. But as soon as she took a sip, her face twisted in disgust. "You didn’t add sugar, you stupid bitch," she snapped. Before I could apologize, she threw the hot coffee onto my hands. I gasped in pain as the liquid burned my skin, but I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t. Complaining to Alpha Kayden would do no good. He would never believe me. He would always side with Selena. So I just bit my lip and endured it. "Hurry up and bring breakfast to us," she said, her voice dripping with irritation as she walked away, leaving me standing there with red, burning hands. After a moment, I took a deep breath and continued cooking. When the pancakes were done, I brought them out to the dining room. As I entered, I saw Selena sitting on Kayden’s lap, kissing him deeply. They looked so happy, so in love. For a moment, I wondered if the Moon Goddess would bless me with a mate. Would he love me? Would he treat me with kindness, unlike everyone else in this pack? My thoughts were interrupted when Selena pulled away from Kayden’s kiss and glared at me. "What are you staring at? Do you want to take a picture?" she sneered. "Get out of here." I hurried away, my face flushing with embarrassment. I finished my work quietly, avoiding the other pack members as I went about my duties. In the afternoon, Fred, the Beta, approached me. "Leah, the Alpha’s room is a mess. Clean it up before he comes back from his meeting," he ordered. "Yes, Beta," I responded quietly and went to clean the Alpha’s room. It was a disaster. There were clothes and scattered papers everywhere. The bed was unmade. It took me hours to tidy it up, but I didn’t mind. Cleaning was what I was used to. It was the one thing I could do without anyone yelling at me. By the time I was nearly finished, the sun had set. The Moon was high in the sky, casting a soft glow into the room through the large windows. I glanced at the clock. It was already eight. I hadn’t set the table for dinner yet. Alpha Kayden would be furious if the table wasn’t ready when he returned. Just as I was about to hurry out of the room, a sharp pain shot through my abdomen. I doubled over, gasping. The pain spread quickly, my joints cracking, my muscles tightening. I knew instantly what this was; my first shift. My wolf was coming out. I was finally shifting. My body convulsed, bones snapping and reforming. White fur sprouted on my arms, and I felt my body stretching and changing. It was excruciating, but at the same time, there was a strange sense of release, of freedom. After what felt like an eternity, I had fully shifted into my wolf. I glanced down at my paws, surprised at how beautiful and strong my wolf was. Suddenly, I heard a deep voice behind me. "Who are you?" I turned to see Alpha Kayden standing in the doorway, his eyes wide with shock. He must have come back from his meeting and found me in his room. But before I could even think about what to do, something else hit me. A scent. It was intoxicating, a mix of pine and fresh rain, warm and comforting yet powerful. My wolf stirred restlessly, and then I heard her whisper in my mind, "Mate." My heart stopped. No. This wasn’t possible. Alpha Kayden? My mate? The Moon Goddess couldn’t have made such a mistake. I was an omega, a lowly servant. There was no way an Alpha could be mated to someone like me. It couldn’t be real. Kayden’s eyes were wide as he stepped closer to me. "You’re… my mate," he said, his voice low, almost in disbelief. I started to panic. This couldn’t be happening. I wasn’t ready for this. How could I, an omega, be his mate? What would the pack say? What would Selena do? Kayden took another step toward me, his eyes softening as if he was trying to understand. "Leah…" I couldn’t handle it. I was very scared and before I knew it, I turned and ran. My wolf instincts took over, and I jumped through the open window, landing softly on the ground outside. I ran into the night, the cool air rushing through my fur, my heart pounding in my chest. I couldn’t face him. Not like this. What was I going to do now?

第2章

_Leah's POV_ As I ran, the wind brushed through my fur, and my senses heightened with every step. I felt every leaf under my paws, every whisper of the night. It was like nothing I had ever experienced. I could see clearly in the darkness. My wolf's eyes could pick up every detail. I felt free for the first time in my life, no longer bound by the walls of the packhouse or the weight of my status as an omega. My muscles surged with power as I pushed myself to run faster. I was trying to escape the confusion and fear swirling inside me. But then, I heard them; heavy footsteps in the distance. Someone was following me. I glanced over my shoulder, my heart dropping when I saw them. The guards. They were coming after me, just as I feared. "Leah!" one of them shouted. "The Alpha needs you to come back to the packhouse right now. This is an order. If you don’t come back, there will be consequences!" I skidded to a stop, my heart pounding in my chest. Consequences. I knew what that meant. Alpha Kayden wasn’t the type to let disobedience slide. He could be cruel when he wanted to be. And even though my wolf screamed at me to keep running, I knew I had no choice. I couldn’t risk what he might do if I didn’t return. Reluctantly, I turned around and followed the guards back to the packhouse, my stomach twisting with fear and uncertainty. What was going to happen? Would Kayden punish me? Was he angry that the Moon Goddess had made me his mate? My thoughts spun wildly as we approached the house. When we arrived, Kayden was sitting on the porch, his expression unreadable. His eyes locked on me, and I could feel the tension in the air. “Shift back,” he ordered, his voice cold. I hesitated for a second, but then I forced my wolf back, the white fur receding as my bones cracked painfully, returning me to my human form. The shift left me feeling vulnerable and exposed, standing there in front of him in nothing but the moonlight. Without a word, Kayden grabbed my arm roughly, his fingers biting into my skin as he pulled me inside. I barely had time to process what was happening before he dragged me into the main hall. My heart raced as I realized what he was about to do. I had seen rejection ceremonies before, but never imagined I would be part of one. “Ray,” Kayden barked at his Gamma, “gather everyone. I have an important announcement.” Ray nodded and disappeared to spread the word. I stood there, my mind racing, barely able to breathe. This was it. He was going to reject me. I had known it was coming, but the reality of it hit me like a tidal wave. How could the Moon Goddess have made such a cruel mistake? How could she pair me, an omega, with an Alpha like Kayden? He turned to face me. His eyes were cold. “Don’t get your hopes up, Leah. I will never accept you as my mate,” he said, his voice like ice. “You’re a weak omega. I need a strong Luna, not someone like you. Selena is the one who deserves to lead by my side. She is strong, the daughter of a Beta, and has a powerful wolf. You don’t compare to her.” Every word he said cut deeper than the last. I wanted to fight back, to scream that it wasn’t fair, but I stayed silent, my chest tight with emotion. There was no point. He had already made up his mind. Soon, the hall began to fill with pack members. I could feel their eyes on me, some curious, others filled with pity. They all knew what was about to happen. Selena entered the room, walking confidently toward the front, her eyes gleaming with triumph. She stopped beside Kayden, a satisfied smirk on her face. “I told you, Leah,” Selena said quietly, her voice dripping with venom. “You don’t belong here. Kayden was always mine. I am the one who will stand by his side.” I swallowed hard, refusing to let her see how much her words hurt. I already knew she was right. Kayden and Selena had been together for years. She was everything I wasn’t. She was strong, confident and powerful. And I was just… me. Kayden stepped forward and addressed the pack. “I have gathered you all here tonight for a rejection ceremony.” Gasps echoed through the crowd, and I could feel the weight of their shock, their disbelief. But I didn’t look at them. I kept my eyes fixed on the floor, trying to keep my emotions under control. Kayden took a small knife from Fred, his Beta, and made a shallow cut on his hand. My stomach churned as I realized what was coming next. He grabbed my hand and did the same. I winced as the blade sliced my skin, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the ache in my heart. He pressed our hands together, mixing our blood as he spoke the words that sealed my fate. “I, Alpha Kayden Maxwell of the Blood Moon pack, reject Leah James as my mate.” The words hit me like a punch to the chest, knocking the air from my lungs. The pain that followed was unbearable, like my soul was being torn in two. I gasped, clutching my chest as the bond between us snapped. It was a pain like no other. It was sharp, deep and endless. Kayden stared at me, waiting. I knew what I had to do. I had to accept his rejection, to sever the bond completely. My voice trembled as I forced the words out. “I… I, Leah James, accept your rejection.” The pain intensified, ripping through me like fire. I staggered, struggling to stay on my feet. Tears blurred my vision, but I refused to let them fall. I wouldn’t let him see how broken I was. Kayden turned away from me, as if I was nothing more than a nuisance. “Now that that’s done, I have another announcement,” he said, addressing the pack. “Selena will be my mate. She has all the qualities of a future Luna. She has the strength, power and the bloodline of a Beta. She is everything a Luna should be.” The crowd erupted into cheers, their approval for Selena loud and clear. I watched as she stepped forward, a radiant smile on her face. She leaned into Kayden as if to mark her territory. The sight of them together made my stomach turn. Selena’s gaze flicked to me, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. “I told you, Leah. You were never meant to be here. How dare you try to steal Kayden from me?" I couldn’t take it anymore. The rejection, the humiliation—it was too much. Without another word, I turned and bolted from the hall, my heart shattering with every step. I didn’t know where I was going, but I didn’t care. I just had to get away. Away from the pain, the rejection, and the cruel reality of my life. Away from the mate who didn’t want me.

第3章

_Leah's POV_ I ran as fast as I could, the cold night air biting against my skin. I didn’t care where I was going. I just needed to get away. My legs felt weak, but I kept moving until I reached my room and slammed the door behind me. I collapsed onto my bed, burying my face in the pillow, and let the tears flow freely. Everything inside me was breaking, the pain from the rejection still raw and burning in my chest. Why? Why had the Moon Goddess paired me with Kayden of all people? She could have given me anyone. Another omega, someone who would have loved me for who I was. But no, she had chosen the Alpha. The one person who would never accept me. He had rejected me, publicly humiliated me in front of the entire pack, and now I was left with nothing. I sobbed into the pillow, my body trembling as the reality of it all sank in. I had heard stories of wolves who found second-chance mates, but they were so rare. The chances of me finding another mate were slim to none. No one would want an omega who had already been rejected. My life felt hopeless, and the weight of that truth crushed me. As I lay there, exhausted from crying, I heard a knock at the door. I ignored it, not wanting to face anyone. Whoever it was, they could go away. I didn’t want to talk. Not now. But the knocking continued. I groaned and slowly got up, dragging myself toward the door. When I opened it, my heart sank. Selena stood there with a cruel smile on her lips. “Well, well,” she said, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “I thought I would come by and check on you. After all, it’s not every day that a lowly omega gets rejected in front of the whole pack.” I stayed silent, my eyes red and puffy from crying. I didn’t have the energy to argue with her, to fight back. She had already won. There was no point. Selena stepped closer, her eyes gleaming with malice. “Did you really think Kayden would choose you over me? You? An omega? You should have known better. He was always mine, Leah. He’ll never leave me, not for someone like you.” I bit my lip, trying to keep my emotions in check. Every word she said felt like a dagger twisting deeper into my heart. I wanted to scream at her, to tell her to leave me alone, but I couldn’t. I just didn’t have the strength. Selena’s expression darkened when she saw that I wasn’t responding. “What? No words? Nothing to say? You really are pathetic, Leah.” She moved closer and grabbed a fistful of my hair, yanking it hard. “Maybe I need to teach you a lesson about staying in your place.” I gasped in pain, my scalp burning as she pulled harder. “Stop… Selena, let go,” I whispered, trying to free myself from her grip, but she only laughed, twisting my hair more painfully. “You think you can tell me what to do?” she spat. “You don’t deserve to even speak to me!” Something inside me snapped. I had endured enough. I couldn’t take her cruelty anymore. Without thinking, I grabbed her hand and twisted her wrist, forcing her to let go of my hair. She yelped in surprise, but I didn’t stop there. I kicked her hard in the stomach, sending her stumbling backward. She lost her balance, and as she fell, her nose hit the edge of the doorframe with a sickening crack. Blood poured from her nose, and she screamed in pain. Within seconds, Kayden came rushing down the hallway, his eyes wide with fury. He ran to Selena’s side, helping her to her feet. She clutched her nose, still bleeding, and glared at me with venom in her eyes. “She attacked me!” Selena wailed. “She grabbed my hair and threw me into the door! Look what she did to my face!” Kayden’s expression darkened as he turned to me. “How dare you touch my mate?” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. My heart raced. “Kayden, I didn’t....she started it! She was pulling my hair, and I just… I just wanted her to stop.” But he wasn’t listening. His eyes were filled with anger and disgust as he stepped toward me. “I knew you would be jealous after the rejection, but I didn’t think you would stoop this low, Leah. Hurting my mate? Do you have any idea what you have done?” “I didn’t mean to hurt her!” I pleaded, desperation creeping into my voice. “She attacked me first! I just.....” “Enough!” Kayden’s voice thundered through the hallway, silencing me instantly. “I don’t want to hear your excuses. You have crossed the line, Leah.” Tears filled my eyes as I looked at him, trying to make him understand. “Please, Kayden… she was hurting me…” He shook his head. “Guards!” he shouted, and two guards immediately appeared. “Take her to the cellar.” The cellar. My blood ran cold at his words. The cellar was a dark, damp place where disobedient pack members were thrown for punishment. It was a place of isolation, where no one could hear you, where no one cared what happened to you. I had heard the stories. I had never imagined I would end up there. “Kayden, no, please…” I begged, my voice trembling with fear. “Don’t do this. Please, I didn’t....” But it was too late. The guards grabbed my arms roughly and began dragging me down the hallway. I struggled against them, my heart pounding in terror, but they were too strong. I glanced back at Kayden, hoping for some sign of mercy, but he didn’t even look at me. He had already turned his back. As the guards dragged me away, I could still hear Selena’s mocking laughter echoing in my ears. I had lost everything; my mate, my dignity and now my freedom. I didn’t know how long I would be in the cellar, but I knew one thing for sure: I was truly alone. They led me down the stone stairs, the air growing colder and damper with each step. The cellar was as horrible as I had imagined. It was dark, cold and filled with the stench of mildew. The guards shoved me into a small and damp room with no windows and slammed the door shut behind me. I collapsed onto the cold stone floor, my heart aching in my chest. The rejection had been painful enough, but this? This was unbearable. I had never felt so broken, so completely lost. I didn’t know how much more I could take.

_Leah's POV_ I didn’t know how many days I had spent in that dark cellar. The cold stone walls seemed to close in on me and the silence was unbearable. Every so often, the guards would come to give me some food, if you could even call it that. A few scraps of bread, maybe a piece of old meat, and a small cup of water. I didn’t even feel hungry anymore. I was just tired. Tired of being imprisoned here, of being alone, of the pain that seemed to follow me everywhere. Time didn’t mean anything down here. I didn’t know whether it was day or night, whether it had been a week or more since they had thrown me into this miserable place. All I knew was that each day bled into the next, and my mind grew numb to the suffering. My body ached. The constant chill had settled into my bones, making it hard to move. I curled up on the hard floor, hugging myself, trying to find warmth, trying to remember what it felt like to be free. But there was nothing left for me out there. Kayden had rejected me. My mate, the one the Moon Goddess had fated me to be with, had turned his back on me. The pain of that rejection still burned in my chest, but now it was mixed with the fear of what would happen next. Would they leave me here forever? Would anyone come for me? Or was this my end, a slow, torturous end in the dark? I was deep in those thoughts when I heard footsteps echoing in the hallway outside my cell. At first, I thought it was just the guards again, bringing more scraps of food, but the footsteps were different this time. They were lighter and faster. I pushed myself up, leaning against the wall, my heart pounding in my chest. The door creaked open, and there they were: Selena and Kayden. My heart sank. Selena looked radiant, as always, her long blonde hair flowing over her shoulders. Her face was still smug, but there was a bandage wrapped around her nose. It looked like she had suffered a little from the fight, but not nearly as much as I had. The satisfaction in her eyes sent chills down my spine. She enjoyed seeing me like this; broken, weak, and imprisoned. Kayden stood beside her, his expression hard. There was no trace of the man I had once hoped could be my mate, the man I had dreamed about. Now, there was only anger in his eyes. Selena’s voice was as sweet as poison as she spoke. “Look at her, Kayden. She is still alive. How unfortunate,” she said, tilting her head in mock pity. “After everything she has done to me, I would have thought she would be dead by now.” I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t. I didn’t have the energy to fight her anymore. I just wanted it all to end. Selena stepped closer, her heels clicking against the stone floor. “Kayden, you see how much I have suffered because of her.” She gestured to her bandaged nose, a pout on her lips. “Every time I look in the mirror, I am reminded of what she did to me. The pain… I think she should pay for that, don’t you?” Kayden’s gaze flickered toward her, softening. “Yes, sweetheart,” he said, his voice low. “You have been through so much because of her.” I swallowed, my throat dry and tight. There was no escape. I knew what was coming and it terrified me. Kayden turned to the guards standing at the door. “Bring me a whip,” he commanded. The guards hesitated for a second, their eyes flicking to me. I saw something there, maybe pity, but they couldn’t do anything. They were under Kayden’s orders, and disobeying him meant punishment for them, too. The guards quickly fetched the whip, a long, black leather strap that looked menacing even in the dim light of the cellar. Kayden took it in his hands, testing its weight. “This is what you deserve, Leah,” he said quietly, stepping toward me. “You dared to hurt my mate. Now, you’ll know what it feels like to suffer.” I pressed myself against the wall, my heart racing in my chest. “Kayden, please,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “I didn’t mean to hurt her… She was....” “Enough!” he shouted, cutting me off. “You had your chance to explain, but your actions spoke louder than your words. Now, take your punishment like the omega you are.” The first strike came hard and fast, the whip cracking through the air and slashing across my back. I screamed in pain as the leather tore through my clothes and cut into my skin. The sharp sting was unbearable, and I felt blood begin to seep from the wound almost immediately. I fell to my knees, my hands trembling as I tried to brace myself for the next blow, but it came just as hard as the first. Another scream tore from my throat as the whip lashed across my side, sending waves of agony through my body. Kayden didn’t stop. He struck me again and again, each blow more painful than the last. My clothes were shredded, hanging in tatters, and blood soaked through the fabric, staining the floor beneath me. I tried to stay conscious, tried to endure the pain, but it was too much. Each time the whip cracked against my skin, I felt myself breaking a little more. My mind was spinning, the pain overwhelming everything else. I wanted to scream, to beg for mercy, but I knew it wouldn’t help. Kayden wouldn’t stop until he was satisfied, and Selena… Selena watched with a twisted smile on her face, enjoying every second of my suffering. My vision blurred as the world around me began to fade. The pain was too much. I couldn’t take it anymore. I wanted it to stop, to just end. I wanted to die. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I collapsed to the floor, unable to hold myself up any longer. My body was drenched in blood, my skin raw and torn from the whipping. I could barely move, barely breathe. Every inch of me hurt, inside and out. Kayden stood over me, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. He lowered the whip, finally satisfied with what he had done. “Let this be a lesson, Leah,” he said coldly. “You’ll never attempt to hurt anyone again. Especially not Selena.” I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. My body was too broken, too drained of energy to even speak. Selena walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Thank you, Kayden,” she purred. “I feel so much better now.” He kissed her on the forehead. “Anything for you, sweetheart.” They left the room, the door slamming shut behind them. The guards lingered for a moment, their expressions filled with pity as they looked at me lying on the floor. But they couldn’t help me. They were just as powerless as I was. Once they were gone, I lay there in the darkness, my body trembling with pain. Every breath hurt, every movement sent sharp stabs of agony through me. I wanted to cry, but I was too weak to even shed a tear. All I could do was beg silently to the Moon Goddess. "Please, let me die," I thought. "Please, just end this pain. I can’t take it anymore. I don’t want to live like this." But there was no answer. No comfort. Only the cold, unyielding darkness of the cellar, wrapping around me like a suffocating blanket. I didn’t know how long I stayed there, drifting in and out of consciousness, the pain never leaving me. My mind was numb, my body broken, and I felt like I was slipping away. Maybe the Moon Goddess would answer my prayers after all. Maybe she would let me die here, alone and forgotten. And maybe… that would be a mercy.

第5章

_Leah's POV_ I didn’t know how many days had passed but I was in constant pain. The cuts on my back, sides, and arms never stopped burning. The guards came once in a while, dropping scraps of food that were barely enough to keep me alive. A piece of old bread, a cup of dirty water and nothing to heal my wounds. My skin had become raw, and I could feel the infection starting to set in. Fever raged through my body, making me shiver uncontrollably. Sweat poured from my forehead, but I was still cold, so cold. I didn’t know how much longer I could take it. My whole body ached. The fever brought on strange dreams, visions of my past life, of what could have been. I had once been hopeful. I had once believed that my mate, Kayden, would love and protect me. How foolish I had been. Now, there was nothing left for me. No love. No future. Only pain. I lay on the hard, cold floor, staring up at the ceiling. I was too weak to move, too tired to cry. My body was failing and I knew that I was going to die soon. The thought didn’t scare me anymore. In fact, it brought a strange kind of relief. Death would be a release from this suffering, and at least I wouldn’t have to feel the constant sting of rejection and betrayal any longer. My thoughts drifted in and out of focus as the fever took hold of me again. I could hear voices in my head, faint and distant. Was it the Moon Goddess calling me? Was she finally answering my prayers? A soft noise broke through the haze of my mind. It wasn’t the usual clank of guards’ boots or the metallic scrape of keys. It was quieter, more deliberate, like someone trying to be careful. I blinked. I was struggling to focus. The door to my cell creaked open, but it wasn’t the guards. A figure stepped inside. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with golden hair that glimmered even in the dim light of the cellar. His eyes, a striking shade of blue, locked onto mine. I felt my breath catch in my throat. He wasn’t wearing the uniform of the guards, and for a moment, I wondered if I was hallucinating. “Who are you?” My voice was barely a whisper, weak and broken. “Don’t be afraid, my queen,” he said softly while taking a step toward me. “I’m here to help you.” I stared at him, my heart pounding. Queen? Was this some kind of cruel joke? I tried to move away from him, crawling backward across the cold stone floor, but my body was too weak to get far. My limbs trembled with the effort. “I’m not your queen,” I said. “You’re mistaken. Please, just leave me alone.” He knelt down beside me, his movements slow and gentle, as if he didn’t want to startle me. “Leah, I know what they have done to you, but I swear, I am here to take you away from this place.” I shook my head. This had to be some kind of trick. “Why should I trust you? You’re probably just another one of them.” His gaze softened, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I saw something I hadn’t seen in so long. Compassion. “I’m not like them, Leah. My name is Tariq, and I have been watching, waiting for the right time to save you. But we need to go. Now.” “Tariq?” The name sounded familiar, like a whisper I had heard in a dream. But it didn’t make sense. Nothing made sense anymore. I tried to push myself up, to stand, but my legs gave out beneath me. Before I hit the ground, Tariq’s strong arms wrapped around me, catching me just in time. His touch was gentle, careful not to press on my wounds, and for a moment, I felt a strange warmth radiating from him. It was a feeling I hadn’t experienced in so long; comfort and safety. “Why… why are you helping me?” I asked, my voice shaking. “I don’t even know you.” “There’s no time to explain everything right now,” he said, his eyes darting toward the door. “The guards will notice I’m gone soon, and they’ll come looking. We need to get out of here before that happens.” I nodded, even though my mind was still spinning with confusion. I didn’t have the strength to argue. I didn’t have the strength for anything anymore. All I wanted was to get away from this place, to escape the nightmare that had become my life. Tariq shifted me in his arms, carrying me effortlessly as if I weighed nothing. He moved quickly but quietly, making sure to avoid the patrols as we slipped out of the cellar. I rested my head against his chest. The cold night air hit me like a shock as we stepped out into the open. The scent of the forest surrounded us, fresh and alive, so different from the damp, suffocating air of the cellar. I took a deep breath, my chest aching, but the crisp air was a relief. “We’re almost there,” Tariq whispered as he carried me into the cover of the trees. His movements were swift and careful, his eyes constantly scanning the area around us. He was focused and determined. Once we were deep enough into the woods, Tariq gently lowered me to the ground, making sure I was resting against a soft patch of grass. I winced as my wounds protested the movement, but I didn’t cry out. The pain was a part of me now, as familiar as breathing. “Are you alright?” he asked, his voice filled with concern as he knelt beside me. I nodded weakly, though I wasn’t alright. My entire body felt like it was on fire, and the fever had taken hold of me again, making everything blur at the edges. “I… I don’t understand,” I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper. “Why are you doing this? Why are you calling me queen?” Tariq’s blue eyes met mine. “Because you are a queen, Leah. You don’t remember yet, but you’re meant for something greater than this. Kayden and Selena, they have tried to break you, but you’re stronger than they know.” I stared at him, confusion swirling in my mind. “I’m no queen,” I said, my voice trembling. “I’m just… I’m just an omega.” Tariq shook his head. “You’re so much more than that. And I promise, I’ll help you remember who you truly are. But for now, we need to get you to safety.” I didn’t know if I could believe him. Everything in my life had been shattered, and now this stranger was telling me I was something I couldn’t even fathom. “I don’t understand,” I whispered, my throat tight. “I’ve lost everything. How can I be anything more?” Tariq reached out, his hand hovering just above mine as if he was afraid to touch me. “I know it feels like that now,” he said softly, his voice filled with emotion. “But you haven’t lost everything, Leah. You still have a future. You still have a destiny. And I’ll help you find it.” His words were like a lifeline, something to hold onto in the storm of my mind. For so long, I had believed I was nothing. That I was destined to live in the shadows, to be weak and forgotten. But now, for the first time, someone was telling me otherwise. “Why… why me?” I asked, my voice trembling with uncertainty. Tariq’s gaze softened as he looked at me. “Because you’re special, Leah. You’ve always been special. And I’m going to prove that to you.” I swallowed hard, the weight of his words pressing down on me. Could it be true? Could I really be something more than the broken girl Kayden had left behind? Before I could say anything else, a distant howl echoed through the trees. Tariq’s expression tensed, and he stood up quickly, scanning the area around us. “We need to move,” he said, his voice low. “They’re coming. Can you walk?” I tried to stand, but my legs wobbled beneath me, too weak from the fever and the pain. Tariq caught me before I fell. “I’ve got you,” he said softly, lifting me into his arms again. “I won’t let them take you back.” As he carried me deeper into the forest, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time. There was a glimmer of hope.

_Leah's POV_ Tariq carried me through the thick woods for what felt like hours. My body was limp in his arms, every muscle too weak to respond. The cold night air bit at my skin, but somehow, his warmth shielded me from the worst of it. I didn’t understand how he could be so gentle after all the cruelty I had known. Every time he looked at me, his gaze was filled with kindness. Eventually, we reached a small cottage nestled between the trees. It was old but sturdy, with smoke rising from a chimney. Tariq stopped and whistled three times. His breath was visible in the cool air. Moments later, the door creaked open, revealing an older woman with silver hair tied back in a loose bun. Her eyes were sharp but filled with warmth. “Tariq,” she said softly. “Is this her?” He nodded and gently carried me inside. “She needs help, Mother. Quickly.” The inside of the cottage was small but cozy. The air was filled with the scent of herbs and burning wood. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting a warm glow over the room. My body, still racked with fever chills, immediately relaxed at the sight of the fire. Tariq laid me down on a soft couch near the chimney. The warmth seeped into my bones, and for the first time in days, I felt a bit of comfort. I glanced up at Tariq as he knelt beside me. He gave me a reassuring smile. “You’re safe now, Leah. But I need to take a look at your wounds. Turn around for me, alright?” I hesitated but his kindness made me trust him. Slowly, I turned onto my side, wincing as the movement pulled at the torn skin on my back. Tariq’s eyes darkened with concern when he saw the extent of the damage. “Susan, bring me the ointment and the medical kit,” he called to the woman, who was already bustling around the room. The woman, his mother, hurried back with a small box and a jar filled with a thick and green paste. She handed them to Tariq without a word. Her eyes were soft as she looked at me. “Don’t worry, dear. You’re in good hands now,” she said, her voice full of reassurance. Tariq opened the medical kit and pulled out some cotton. I tensed, knowing that cleaning the wounds would hurt, but he was so gentle with me. As he carefully wiped the blood and dirt from my back, I couldn’t help but flinch. “I know it hurts,” he said softly. “But this will help you heal.” I nodded and bit my lip to keep from crying out. His touch was careful but the pain was still sharp. After he cleaned the wounds, he applied the ointment, which felt cool against my burning skin. I exhaled a shaky breath. I was grateful for the relief it brought. Tariq wrapped the bandages around me. His hands were working with precision and care. I couldn’t help but think about how different he was from Kayden. Where Kayden had caused me nothing but pain, Tariq was bringing me comfort and healing. I found myself wishing that the Moon Goddess had mated me to someone like him instead of Kayden. Maybe things would have been different. Once he was done, Tariq sat back on his heels and met my eyes. “It’ll hurt for a while, but you’ll heal faster now,” he said. “Thank you,” I whispered. My voice was still weak but I meant it with all my heart. Tariq’s mother, Susan, gave him a proud smile before turning to me. “Come with me, dear,” she said gently. “Let’s find you some clean clothes. You can’t stay in those rags.” I hesitated, feeling too weak to even move, but I nodded. Susan helped me stand, and I leaned on her as we walked toward a small set of stairs. “Yes, madam,” I said softly. She chuckled. “Call me Susan, child. None of that ‘madam’ nonsense.” Upstairs, she led me into a small and simple room. There was a large wardrobe against the wall, and she rummaged through it, finally pulling out an oversized dress. “This should do for now,” she said, holding it out to me. The dress was far too big for me, but I accepted it gratefully. “It’s perfect,” I told her, even though it hung loose on my frame. I didn’t care. Anything was better than the torn and bloodied clothes I had been wearing. “I’m sorry it’s so big,” Susan said with an apologetic smile. “I’m not exactly your size, as you can see.” She laughed softly while patting her round belly. I shook my head quickly. “No, it’s fine. I’m just grateful for anything. I’m the one disrupting your lives.” “Nonsense,” she replied. “You are no burden, Leah. You need help and we’re here to give it.” Her words touched me and I nodded. I was too tired to argue. I slipped into the dress, the soft fabric soothing against my aching skin. “You must be exhausted,” Susan said and guided me toward a small bed in the adjacent room. “Get some rest. You have been through more than anyone should.” I wanted to rest, but there were so many questions swirling in my mind. “I need to talk to Tariq. There’s so much I don’t understand.” Susan gave me a sympathetic look. “I know, dear. But he’ll answer all your questions tomorrow. For now, you need to sleep. Rest is the most important thing.” I opened my mouth to protest but quickly realized that she was right. My body was too weak, too tired to do anything but lie down. I nodded and let her lead me to the small bed. It was simple but comfortable, and as soon as I lay down, I felt the weight of exhaustion pulling at me. “Goodnight, Leah,” Susan said softly, her hand brushing over my forehead in a motherly gesture before she quietly left the room. I stared up at the ceiling, my thoughts racing despite my fatigue. Tariq had saved me, but how had he known about me? How long had he been watching me? He said I was meant for something more, but what could that possibly be? I had spent so long feeling like I was nothing, like I didn’t matter. Could he really believe otherwise? As I lay there, the warmth of the bed and the soft crackling of the fire downstairs slowly lulled me into a sense of peace. Tariq had risked his life to save me. I had to trust him. He had been so gentle and so kind. But who was he really? And why did he seem to care so much about me? I closed my eyes. I was too tired to think anymore. My body ached, but for the first time in days, I felt safe. I would have to wait until tomorrow for answers, but for now, sleep was all I needed. As the darkness took hold, I whispered a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess, thanking her for sending me Tariq. He was an angel.

_Leah's POV_ The next morning, I woke up in the small, cozy bed feeling more rested than I had in a long time. My muscles were still sore, but the intense pain from my wounds had lessened, thanks to Tariq's care. The sunlight streamed through the small window, casting a golden hue across the room. For a moment, I just lay there, taking in the peace and quiet. It was hard to believe that just a day ago, I had been on the verge of collapse. I slowly sat up, rubbing my eyes, and stretched my stiff limbs. The oversized dress Susan had given me was soft and comforting, far better than the torn rags I had been wearing before. My mind drifted to Tariq. He had been so kind, so gentle. I couldn’t understand why someone like him cared about me. But I was grateful, more than I could express. The scent of something cooking reached my nose, and my stomach growled in response. I realized how hungry I was. Slowly, I stood up, careful not to jostle my bandaged wounds too much, and made my way downstairs. In the small kitchen, I found Susan humming softly as she worked over the stove. The warm scent of herbs and something frying filled the room, and the fire in the hearth crackled cheerfully. She turned when she heard me, her face lighting up with a smile. “Good morning, dear. Did you sleep well?” she asked kindly. “Yes, thank you,” I replied softly, feeling a little shy. I wasn’t used to this kind of warmth from others. “Everything was perfect.” “I’m glad to hear that,” she said while wiping her hands on a towel. “Now, what would you like for breakfast?” I hesitated. I did not want to be a bother. “Oh, whatever you have is fine. I am not picky.” She chuckled and waved her hand dismissively. “Nonsense. You’re a guest here, and we take care of our guests. How about some eggs, bacon, and fresh bread?” I smiled, my mouth watering at the thought. “That sounds amazing.” Susan busied herself with preparing the food, moving around the kitchen with ease and grace. I watched her, feeling an odd sense of comfort in the domesticity of it all. It reminded me of simpler times, back when my life hadn’t been filled with pain and heartache. She set the table with two plates and motioned for me to sit down. “Here you go, dear,” she said and placed a plate in front of me, filled with eggs, bacon, and a thick slice of buttered bread. “Eat up. You need your strength.” I picked up my fork and took a bite, savoring the delicious flavors. It was simple food, but it tasted like heaven after everything I had been through. As we ate, Susan sat across from me. “Where’s Tariq?” I asked between bites, glancing around the room. “He had to run an errand. He will be back soon.” I nodded, feeling a little disappointed that he wasn’t here. I wasn’t sure why I felt that way, but I found myself looking forward to seeing him again. Susan and I chatted for a while as we ate. She was easy to talk to, her voice soothing and calm. I asked her about their life here in the forest, and she told me their story. “My husband, Tariq’s father, was once part of the Emerald Pack,” she began. “He was a good man, loyal to the pack. But one day, the Alpha accused him of stealing. It was a lie, of course, but the Alpha didn’t care. He banished us all; me, my husband, and our little Tariq, who was just a baby at the time.” I looked at her with wide eyes, my heart aching for them. “That’s horrible. How could they do that?” She shrugged, a sad smile tugging at her lips. “That’s the way of the world sometimes, dear. My husband tried to defend his honor, but it didn’t matter. We were cast out, forced to live in the wilderness. It was a hard life, but we managed. Until...” Her voice trailed off, and I saw the pain in her eyes. I reached across the table and gently touched her hand. “What happened?” I asked softly. “Rogues,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “They attacked us one night. My husband... he fought them off, but he didn’t survive.” I felt a lump form in my throat. “I’m so sorry, Susan. That must have been awful.” She nodded. “It was. But Tariq and I survived. We have been living here ever since, making the best of things. It’s peaceful, at least. And I am grateful for that.” I squeezed her hand, my heart aching for her loss. “You’re very strong, Susan. I don’t know how you have managed all these years.” She gave me a small smile. “We do what we have to, don’t we? Life goes on, and we must find a way to live.” Before I could say anything more, there was a knock at the door. Susan stood up quickly, wiping her hands on her apron. “That must be Tariq,” she said with a smile. She went to the door and opened it, and sure enough, Tariq stepped inside, carrying a few bags. His eyes immediately found mine, and he smiled softly as he set the bags down on the table. “I see you’re feeling better this morning,” he said, his voice warm and gentle. “I am,” I replied, smiling shyly. “Thank you for everything, Tariq. I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you.” He waved his hand dismissively as he walked to the sink to wash his hands. “There’s no need for that. I’m just glad you’re alright.” Susan served him a plate of breakfast, and he joined us at the table. As we ate, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace. It was strange, sitting here with these people who had been strangers to me just yesterday, but now it felt like I was part of something... something good.

_Leah's POV_ Once we had finished eating, Tariq turned to me, his expression thoughtful. “Did you sleep well last night?” he asked. “I did,” I said, nodding. “Better than I have in a long time. Thank you, Tariq. And thank you, Susan, for your hospitality.” Susan smiled warmly at me, but I noticed Tariq’s eyes lingered on me, as if he was trying to figure something out. Finally, I couldn’t hold back the question that had been nagging at me since last night. “Tariq,” I began hesitantly, “last night, you said something about me being... a queen. What did you mean by that?” Tariq’s expression shifted, growing more serious. He cleared his throat, glancing at his mother before turning back to me. “Leah, there is something that you need to know. You are the last descendant of a powerful bloodline. A royal bloodline, in fact.” I stared at him, my heart skipping a beat. “What? No, that can’t be right. I’m... I’m an omega. My mother was an omega, and my father.....” “Your mother was royalty,” Tariq interrupted gently. “She was the rightful heir to a throne, but she chose to walk away from it. She gave up her crown when she mated with your father, an ordinary man.” I shook my head, unable to process what he was saying. “No, that’s impossible. My mother never told me any of this.” “She couldn’t,” Susan interjected softly. “Your mother went to great lengths to protect you. You see, there’s an ancient curse on your bloodline, placed by a rival Alpha long ago. Your mother hid your identity to keep you safe. She even sealed your powers with the help of a witch.” I blinked at her, feeling completely overwhelmed. “Sealed my powers? What are you talking about?” “Your mother was powerful, Leah, and so are you. But she used magic to suppress your wolf, to make you appear weaker. She did it to protect you from those who might seek to harm you because of the curse.” My mind was spinning. “But... if she sealed my powers, how will they come back? How do you know all of this?” Tariq and Susan exchanged a glance, and it was Tariq who spoke first. “My mother is a seer, Leah. She has psychic gifts. She foresaw this long ago.” Susan nodded. “And the seal on your powers has already started to break. When Kayden rejected you, it triggered the return of your abilities. They will come back gradually, and when they do, you will be stronger than you have ever imagined.” I sat there, stunned, trying to wrap my mind around everything they were telling me. I was supposed to be... royalty? Me? An omega who had spent her entire life being told she was worthless? “I... I don’t understand,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Why are you helping me? Why do you care?” Susan’s eyes softened, and she reached across the table to take my hand. “Your mother saved our lives once, Leah. When the Alpha of the Emerald Pack accused my husband, we were all going to be executed. But your mother used her royal status to lighten our sentence. Thanks to her, we were only banished. We owe her everything.” She looked me in the eyes, her gaze full of warmth and sincerity. “Now, I will do whatever it takes to protect her daughter. You.” My chest tightened. This was all so much to take in. My mother… a royal? And me, too? I felt like I was caught in a whirlwind. How could this be possible? All my life, I had been treated as nothing more than an omega. The lowest of the low. And now, they were telling me I was of royal blood? I glanced between Susan and Tariq, my mind reeling. “This has to be a joke. There is no way this is true. I can’t be… I am just…” I struggled to find the words. I was feeling utterly overwhelmed. “I am just an omega. I can’t accept this.” Tariq’s eyes were gentle as he looked at me. “Leah, I know that this is hard to believe. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Wait a few more days. Your powers are returning, and when they do, you’ll feel it. Then, you’ll know we’re telling the truth.” Could it really be true? I shook my head, trying to push away the doubt creeping in. It didn’t feel real. It felt impossible. But deep down, there was a small part of me that wondered… What if they were right? We finished breakfast in relative silence. My thoughts were a chaotic storm of confusion, disbelief, and a strange sense of hope. When Susan stood to clear the dishes, I felt guilty just sitting there. “Let me help,” I offered. I stood up quickly. “I can wash the dishes.” Susan gave me a kind smile and shook her head. “No, dear. You have been through enough. You rest. Let me take care of it.” I hesitated, feeling useless, but I finally nodded and sat back down. I was still too sore to argue much, anyway. Tariq stood up as well. “I need to check your wounds,” he said. “Let me help you change the bandages and see if they are healing properly.” I felt a strange flutter in my stomach at his words, but I nodded. “Okay." He led me back upstairs to the small room where I had slept. The air felt cooler here, the light softer, but my heart was racing. I sat on the bed, pulling up my shirt to expose the bandages on my back. Tariq's touch was gentle as he began unwrapping the fabric. “Does it hurt much?” he asked quietly. “Not as much as before,” I admitted. “You did a good job.” His lips curved into a small smile, but his focus remained on my wounds. I watched him as he worked, noticing the way his brow furrowed slightly in concentration. His hands were so careful, treating me as if I were something fragile. I wasn’t used to this kind of care. Not from anyone. The bandages finally came off, revealing the gashes that ran down my back. “They’re healing,” Tariq said softly, his fingers brushing lightly over the edges of the wound. “But you will need to rest for a few more days.” I nodded, unable to find the words. There was something about being this close to him, with his hands on me, that made my heart race. He was so calm, so focused. And it made me feel safe. Maybe, I was romantically attracted to Tariq. “Thank you,” I whispered. He glanced up at me, his eyes locking onto mine. “You don’t have to thank me, Leah.” But I did. I felt like I owed him everything. He had saved me when I had no one else. And as much as I wanted to deny it, a part of me wanted to believe him. To believe that I wasn’t just the broken omega I had always thought I was. Maybe… just maybe… I was something more.

_Kayden’s POV_ I stormed into the packhouse. I was furious. How in the hell had she escaped? I had personally ordered my guards to keep that cellar heavily guarded. No one should have been able to slip in or out without my explicit command. And yet, Leah was gone. Disappeared, as if she had vanished into thin air. The guards had searched everywhere, combing through the packhouse and the woods surrounding the territory. There was no sign of her. No scent. No tracks. Nothing. It was as if she had never even existed. I slammed my fist against the wall, the impact cracking the wood paneling. “Find her!” I roared to the nearest guard. “I don’t care what it takes. I want every inch of this land searched again. Do you understand?” The guard flinched, but he nodded quickly before running out the door to relay my orders. Where could she have gone? I paced back and forth, my mind racing with questions. Who had helped her? There had to be a traitor in the pack. Someone had betrayed me, had defied my orders, and let Leah out. It was the only explanation. But who? I trusted my guards, or at least I thought I did. Now, I wasn’t sure who to trust anymore. My hands clenched into fists at my sides, the anger boiling hotter. Leah’s escape was a direct threat to everything I had built. If she was free, she could cause problems for Selena and me. She could reveal things that would tear this pack apart, and I couldn’t let that happen. I should have killed her when I had the chance. The thought gnawed at me like a relentless beast. If I had just ended her miserable life, I wouldn’t be in this mess right now. She wouldn’t be a danger to us. But I had hesitated, thinking I could break her, punish her into submission. Now I was paying the price for my mistake. The door behind me creaked open, and I turned to see Selena walking in. Her expression was calm, but I could see the slight worry in her eyes. She walked over to me, placing a hand on my arm. “Kayden, you need to calm down. You’re going to drive yourself mad like this.” “How can I calm down, Selena?” I snapped, my voice harsher than I intended. “Leah is gone. We have searched everywhere, and there is no trace of her. She could be out there plotting something right now, for all we know.” Selena frowned, but there was a softness in her eyes that I couldn’t ignore. “I understand, Kayden. But you have to remember that we have already increased security around the pack. There is no way she could get back in without being caught. And if she’s still in the area, the guards will find her.” I shook my head. “But what if she’s already gone too far? What if someone took her out of the territory?” Selena stepped closer, her hand resting gently on my chest. “Kayden, listen to me. It is possible that she is already dead. If she escaped into the forest, there are rogues out there. She wouldn’t have survived long on her own in her condition.” I frowned, the thought swirling in my mind. Could that be true? Leah had been weak when I last saw her. Broken. The beating I gave her was meant to make sure she wouldn’t be a threat. If she had somehow made it out of the pack’s territory and crossed paths with rogues, they would have finished her off for me. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that she might survive, that she might find a way to come back and ruin everything. “I hope that you are right,” I muttered while running a hand through my hair. “I can’t afford any mistakes, Selena. Not now.” Selena gave me a small smile and leaned into me, pressing her body against mine. “You worry too much,” she said, her voice soft and sweet. “Leah won’t cause any problems for us. And even if she does, we will handle it together. We are stronger than she is.” I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close, though my mind was still racing. Selena had always been able to calm me down, but this situation felt different. It wasn’t just about Leah being gone. It was the uncertainty, the feeling that I had lost control. Selena tilted her head up to look at me, her eyes shining with excitement. “Instead of worrying about Leah, why don’t we focus on more important things? Like our engagement. I can’t wait to get married to you, Kayden. To finally be your wife and mark you as mine.” Her words should have made me feel better. I should have been thrilled by the thought of our engagement, of marking her and making her my mate in every way. But a part of me, small and buried deep inside, felt uneasy. I had pushed aside my bond with Leah, convinced myself that it didn’t matter, that Selena was the one I truly wanted. But now, with Leah gone, that small part of me twisted in confusion and regret. I forced a smile, trying to push the thoughts away. Selena was my future. Leah was nothing but a memory, a mistake that needed to be erased. “You’re right,” I said, brushing my fingers through Selena’s long, golden hair. “We should focus on us. Leah is gone. She won’t ruin what we have.” Selena smiled brightly, standing on her toes to kiss me softly on the lips. “That’s better. No more worrying about her. Soon, we’ll be married, and everything will be perfect.” I kissed her back, trying to let go of the tension in my chest. “I love you, Selena,” I whispered against her lips. “I love you too, Kayden,” she murmured, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. “And I’ll always be by your side. Nothing can come between us.” Her confidence was reassuring, and for a moment, I let myself believe her words. Leah was out of the picture now. Whatever had happened to her, whether she was dead or hiding somewhere, it didn’t matter. I had Selena. I had my pack. Nothing could threaten that. But deep down, a nagging feeling lingered. A sense of unfinished business. I couldn’t shake the thought that Leah was still out there somewhere, plotting her revenge. And if she was, I would have to deal with her once and for all.

_Leah's POV_ Later that afternoon, while Tariq was outside tending to chores around the house, I found myself in the kitchen with Susan. I offered to help her prepare dinner, not wanting to sit around doing nothing when they had already done so much for me. “I can chop the vegetables,” I said and grabbed a knife from the counter. Susan smiled warmly at me. “Are you sure? You should be resting, Leah.” “I am sure,” I insisted. “I need something to keep my hands busy.” She didn’t argue with me after that, and soon enough, we were working side by side, preparing the meal. It felt... nice. There was a certain ease to being in Susan’s presence. No judgment, no pressure. Just warmth. I hadn’t realized how much I had missed this simple, domestic normalcy. It felt like... family. I was slicing carrots when Susan suddenly spoke up. “You’re a good girl, Leah. Your mother would be proud of you.” Her words took me by surprise. I hadn’t thought about my mother in such a long time, not like this, anyway. The memories of her were too painful. But hearing Susan talk about her now, it made something inside me stir. “I hope so,” I whispered. “I never knew she was... who she was.” “She loved you more than anything,” Susan said softly. “She gave up everything to protect you.” A lump formed in my throat, and I nodded. “Thank you for telling me that.” We worked in silence for a while after that, but it was a comfortable silence. I found myself smiling a little as I chopped the vegetables and watched Susan knead the dough for bread. There was something soothing about it all, something that made me feel like I belonged here, even if just for a little while. As the sun began to set, Tariq came back inside, his face flushed from the cool air outside. He glanced over at me, his gaze lingering just a little too long, and I felt a small flutter in my stomach. Was he looking at me that way on purpose? Or was I imagining things? We sat down to dinner together, the three of us at the small wooden table. The meal was simple but delicious—roast chicken, vegetables, and freshly baked bread. I hadn’t realized how hungry I was until I started eating, and for a while, the conversation was light, mostly between Susan and Tariq as they talked about the chores around the house and what needed to be done tomorrow. But as we ate, I noticed something strange. Every now and then, Tariq would catch my eye, a small smile playing on his lips. Once, when I reached for the bread, his hand brushed mine, lingering just a second too long. My heart raced, and I quickly looked away, my cheeks flushing. Was he... flirting with me? I wasn’t sure. He hadn’t said anything outright, but there was something in the way he looked at me, the way he smiled at me. It was subtle, but it was there. Or maybe I was imagining it. I had been through so much in the past few days—maybe my mind was just playing tricks on me. “Tariq, don’t tease her,” Susan said suddenly, her voice full of affection but with a hint of reprimand. “Leah has been through enough.” I blinked and looked up in surprise. Had he been teasing me? I hadn’t even noticed. Tariq just chuckled and gave his mother an innocent look. “I am not teasing her, Ma. I am just being friendly.” “Hmm,” Susan hummed. She was clearly unconvinced. She looked at me, her eyes softening. “Don’t mind him, dear. He has always been a bit of a flirt.” My heart skipped a beat at that, and I quickly looked down at my plate, trying to hide the blush creeping up my neck. Was that what this was? Flirting? Did Tariq... like me? But before I could dwell on it for too long, Susan’s voice broke through my thoughts. “You know,” she said, glancing at Tariq with a playful smile, “I keep telling my son that he needs to find his mate. He is getting older, and I am not getting any younger. I want to see some grandchildren before I am too old to enjoy them.” I froze, my heart suddenly pounding in my chest. Mate. Of course. Tariq hadn’t met his mate yet. That’s why he was single. That’s why he was still living here with his mother. I swallowed hard, trying to push down the strange wave of disappointment that rose up inside me. Of course, Tariq would find his mate someday. And when he did, he wouldn’t need me anymore. I was just... passing through. Tariq sighed and leaned back in his chair. “I know, Ma. Believe me, I know. But I am already twenty-nine, and I haven’t met her yet. Maybe the Moon Goddess hasn’t blessed me with a mate. Or maybe... I’ll have to take a chosen mate instead.” He said the words casually, but as he spoke, his eyes flickered to me, locking onto mine for just a moment too long. My heart stuttered in my chest. What was he trying to say? Was he implying something? Or was I just reading into it too much? I quickly looked away and focused on my plate. My mind was racing. Did Tariq... want me to be his chosen mate? No, that couldn’t be right. I was just an omega, a broken girl with no real future. He deserved better than that. Better than me. But still... the way he had looked at me. The way he had smiled at me. It made me wonder. “Don’t worry, Tariq,” Susan said with a soft laugh. “The Moon Goddess has a plan for everyone. I am sure that you will meet your mate when the time is right.” “I hope so,” Tariq said, his voice low. “But sometimes... I wonder.” There was a strange tension in the air after that, and I couldn’t help but feel like Tariq’s words were meant for me. But I couldn’t let myself believe it. He was just being kind, and I was just... confused. That was all. After dinner, I helped Susan clear the table, my thoughts still spinning. Tariq had been nothing but kind to me since I arrived, but now I wasn’t sure what to think. Was he just being nice, or was there something more? I found myself glancing at him as we worked, wondering what he was thinking. But every time our eyes met, my heart would race, and I would quickly look away. By the time we finished, I was more confused than ever.
