When I was three months pregnant, I really craved oranges. So I messaged Ludwig Verhaag, my husband, who worked as a doctor in a hospital, asking him to bring me some after get off work. At 11 p.m., Ludwig finally got home, but his hands were empty.
He realized something was wrong and apologized to me, "I'm sorry, honey, I was busy with surgery today and forgot about the oranges. I'll definitely buy them for you tomorrow, don't be angry, okay?"
Without thinking much of it, I comforted him instead. But while tidying his coat, I suddenly found a strawberry hair clip out of his pocket.
Ludwig awkwardly explained, "My junior colleague really likes this brand of hair clips. She asked me to buy her some when I passed by and she's so insistent on it, so I bought it."
I remember clearly that there was a fruit shop next to the hair clip shop and I loved their oranges.
I suddenly felt tired and calmly said to him, "How about we get a divorce?"
——
Ludwig was taken aback, his face darkening as he asked, "What do you mean?"
I tightened my grip on the hair clip, "You didn't bring me any oranges."
"Just because of that?" The man's face instantly darkened and he wearily pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Suzy, you're almost become a mother, why are you still so clingy and temperamental? Pregnant women are all unreasonable. Make any random fuss if you want, I won't argue with you."
With that, he snatched the hair clip from my hand, grabbed his pillow and went to the study. Watching his back turning on me, a subtle, persistent pain shot through my heart.
That night, through various clues, I finally found Ludwig's junior collague, Whitney Morgan. As well as her Twitter account. Upon opening it, it was filled with posts about her daily life with Ludwig.
The photo showed Ludwig eating the fatty meat she had picked out. He hated wasting food. Even if I occasionally pick out ginger I didn’t like, he would scold me. But with Whitney, his attitude was completely different.
Whitney wrote, [Ludwig is cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Although he complains about me every day, he never skips a lunch with me.]
The photo showed Ludwig examining her breasts. Along with caption stated, [I've been holding in too much anger and stressed out lately and I've even developed breast nodules. Luckily, I have Ludwig.]
And the latest post was updated a minute ago. The photo showed her video calling with Ludwig; she's wearing a bunny girl outfit and shaking her hips. She wrote the caption, [Ludwig was upset by a pregnant woman tonight, but I've already made up with him.]
My heart sank completely. So, behind my back, Ludwig and Whitney had already become this intimate.
The next day. Ludwig, taking a rare day off. He bought large, round oranges early in the morning. He peeled all the oranges and placed them on a plate, then lovingly fed them to me.
"I didn't mean to forget the oranges last night, I was really busy and forgot. I know you're emotionally sensitive during pregnancy and will probably overthink a lot of things. I specially went to buy these oranges this morning; they're all very sweet, I'm sure you'll like them all."
Looking at the plump, delicious oranges in front of me, I only felt nauseous.
Just then, Ludwig's phone rang. The caller ID read, [The Dumbest Person in the World.] It seemed like disdain, but it was actually full of affection.
It turned out to be Whitney. She said something to him and his rarely expressionless face instantly showed panic.
He spoke to me almost in a notification tone, "My junior colleague is being harassed by a patient. She's just a young girl and can't handle this. I have to go see her."
I grabbed his hand, "Is she the only one in the hospital? She could ask someone else for help, or call the police. Why does she have to go to someone else's husband?"

"You forgot? Today is my prenatal checkup. You promised to come with me."
Ludwig looked at me as if he were seeing me for the first time, like a stranger, "Suzy, how can you say such heartless things? Whitney is my junior colleague; I have an obligation to take care of her."
With that, he shook off my hand and walked out.
Watching his turning back, I suddenly remembered the day I found out I was pregnant. He was so excited back then, he was even crying. He said that the child and I were his life, but now he couldn't choose us over another woman.
Ten minutes later, Whitney updated her Twitter with photos. The location was Ludwig's office. She was kneeling under the table, dressed in extremely sexy clothes, her face flushed as she unzipped Ludwig's pants. The caption read, [I lied to my senior, saying I was sexually harassed, but it was just to reward him.]
I found it amusing and immediately called Jessica, my best friend and also a lawyer, "Help me draft a divorce agreement. I want to divorce Ludwig."
My friend and I met at a coffee shop. She was furious after learning what Ludwig had done. Her face turning ashen and she kept cursing. After I calmed her down, she quickly drafted a divorce agreement for me.
"Make him sign it as soon as possible. Also, I'm going abroad for work in two weeks; you'll come with me."
On the way home, a black sedan coming from the opposite direction suddenly veered towards us. The driver swerved to avoid it, but unfortunately collided with another car.
I slammed hard into the chair, a sharp pain shooting through my stomach and a warm liquid immediately flowed between my legs. But before I could cry out in pain, my consciousness began to fade.
In the moments before I lost consciousness, I saw a familiar man and woman step out of the black sedan. Ludwig ran towards me in a panic, the hickey on his collarbone piercing my eyes like a sharp thorn.
He held me tightly in his arms, terrified, "Honey, hold on, I'll take you to the hospital right away."
I didn't have time to respond before I fell into a coma. When I woke up, I was already on the operating table.
Ludwig, in a white coat, was anxiously performing surgery on me, "Don't be afraid, Suzy. I won't let anything happen to you or the baby. The surgery will be over soon."
Whitney, standing beside me, had reddened eyes and a choked voice, "I'm so sorry, Suzy. It was all because I interfered with Ludwig's driving that this happened. I'm so sorry, so very sorry. Don't worry, Ludwig is a very skilled doctor. You and the baby will be absolutely fine."
The image of them being intimate in the car immediately flashed through my mind. Anger surged within me, but the anesthesia prevented me from uttering a single word.
Under Ludwig's skill, my surgery was successful and the baby was not in any danger. But just as they were finishing up, Whitney, who was assisting with the suturing, made a fatal mistake while operating the machinery, cutting open my abdomen. Blood gushed out instantly, staining the entire hospital bed red.
"Oh no!" Ludwig's face changed drastically and he immediately began resuscitation efforts.
But it was too late; the baby was gone. I was also half-dead, collapsing unconscious on the operating table.
When I regained my consciousness, Ludwig was beside me, his eyes dark and swollen, clearly having not slept all night.
I forced a smile, "The baby's gone?"
Ludwig's eyes flashed with guilt as he gripped my hand tightly, "I'm sorry, Suzy, I couldn't save him. But don't be too sad, we can have another child. The most important thing is that you're fine now."

Whitney nodded in agreement, "Yes, Suzy, at least we saved your life. Don't do anything rash."
I sneered, "What right do you have to say such things? Didn't you who killed my child? I saw what you did in the car. I will personally report this to the dean and make sure you receive the punishment you deserve."
Upon hearing this, both Ludwig and Whitney's expressions changed.
Whitney knelt down in front of me with a thud, choking back tears and said, "I'm sorry, Suzy, I know I was wrong. Please don't report me, or I'll be fired. I worked so hard to get into this profession; being a doctor is my only dream. If that dream is shattered, I have no reason to live."
Ludwig's face was full of heartache as he frowned and said to me, "I already said it was an accident. We didn't hit you on purpose. Did you have to push her to the brink? It's not like you'll never be able to have children again. Are you going to ruin someone's hard-earned life for someone you've never even met?"
When he said these words, did he remember that it was a child he had gone to great lengths to save? I couldn't be bothered to respond to him and turned my back to them. Anyway, I would be leaving him soon.
Seeing this, Whitney broke down even more and fainted from crying. Ludwig was heartbroken and picked her up and carried her away.
That night, Ludwig had someone drag me out of the hospital and take me home. He confiscated all my communication devices and locked me in the house, forbidding me to leave even a step. I knew he was afraid I would report Whitney and ruin her future.
He said, "I was the one who hit you with the car. If you want trouble, come to me. Whitney is innocent. She came from the countryside and worked her way up from the mountains. We can't ruin her because of what happened between us."
But with his power, even if I wrote ten thousand letters of complaint, I couldn't shake his position in the hospital. To keep me in line, he forced me to take sleeping pills, putting me in a deep sleep all day.
Until this day, I was awakened by a sharp pain. When I opened my eyes, I saw Whitney holding my right hand, repeatedly piercing my flesh with a needle.
Seeing me wake up, she gave me an innocent smile, "Suzy, you're awake. I have an assessment in a few days, so I'll use your hand to get a feel for it. I'm sorry if I hurt you."
Looking at my bloodied hand, I raised my hand and slapped her. The commotion quickly attracted Ludwig.
Seeing the finger marks on Whitney's face, he glared at me angrily, "Suzy! Whitney came to visit you out of kindness, how could you hit her!"
I pointed to the needle marks on my wrist and retorted, "She did this to my hand, why can't I hit her?"
A hint of heartache flashed in Ludwig's eyes. He was about to say something when Whitney suddenly cried out, "I'm sorry, Suzy, I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted to pass the assessment smoothly. I really didn't mean to."
Ludwig couldn't stand her crying, so he quickly wiped away her tears and gently comforted her, "It's not your fault, don't blame yourself too much."
I found it ridiculous. It was clearly me who was in pain, yet he so easily forgave Whitney for me.
I grabbed a vase from the table and smashed it at the two of them, yelling angrily, “Get out! Get out of here!”
Ludwig easily dodged the vase with Whitney, turned and walked out of the room, then ordered his men outside the door.

“Suzy is injured. Call the family doctor to bandage her.”
That night, Ludwig didn't return. But I didn't care. I just silently packing my luggage.
Ludwig and I were childhood sweethearts. We had been together since we were eighteen, now we were twenty-eight years old. We've taken countless photos together and exchanged countless gifts. I burned them all that night.
On the fourth night after Ludwig left, he finally returned. However, he had drunk a lot and Whitney had to help him back.
Seeing me sitting on the sofa in the living room watching TV, Whitney said provocatively, “Ludwig accidentally drank too much to celebrate me passing the exam. Suzy, don't be angry.”
“Who drank too much?” Ludwig retorted defiantly, pinning Whitney against the wall, "I could outdrink ten of you, you little pushover."
Whitney smiled sweetly at me, saying, "Suzy, don't mind, Ludwig is just like that when he's drunk..."
"I don't mind." I interrupted her before she could finish.
Then I got up and went upstairs, ignoring them. That night, ambiguous moans echoed from the living room. I pretended not to hear them.
Whitney even sent me a selfie; her neck was covered in hickeys. [Suzy, don't misunderstand, Ludwig mistook me for you last night. He sucked really hard; it'll probably take several days to fade.] I sneered inwardly, not replying.
The next day at noon, Jessica messaged me. [Have you packed your bags? I bought a 3 PM flight; I'll pick you up soon.]
I replied with [Okay.]
Then I opened the safe deposit box, intending to take the jade pendant my parents had left me for protection. But the safe was empty; the pendant was nowhere to be seen.
A sense of foreboding washed over me and I rushed downstairs. I saw Ludwig wearing an apron, cooking for Whitney in the kitchen. Whitney was sitting on the sofa, legs crossed, watching TV, the jade pendant around her neck.
I strode up to her and said coldly, "Give me back my jade pendant."
Whitney frowned and clutched the pendant tightly, "This was a gift from Ludwig. It is meant to protect me. I can't give it to you."
I sneered, "This is something my parents left me. Why should he give it to you?"
Hearing the commotion, Ludwig came over. Seeing Whitney and me arguing over the jade pendant, a hint of guilt flashed in his eyes.
Then he tried to reassure me, "Whitney is going to a very far place for training next month. I was a little worried about her being alone, so I lent her the jade pendant. Don't worry, I'll return it to you when she gets back."
Anger burned within me and I raised my hand and slapped him. I exclaimed, "Ludwig, you know how important this jade pendant is to me. I wouldn't even wear it myself. Why are you giving it to Whitney?"
Ludwig's face darkened, "It's just a jade pendant. Do you have to be so stingy? It's not like I won't return it back to you."
Before I could reply, Whitney choked out, "Suzy, don't be angry. Since you don't want to give it to me, then I won't take it. I'll give it back to you."
Having said that, she took off the jade pendant and handed it to me. But as I reached out to take it, she let go too early, causing the pendant to crash heavily to the ground. The pendant shattered instantly.
Whitney feigned concern, covering her mouth, "Oh dear, Suzy, why didn't you catch it? The pendant is broken, you can't blame me for that."
Her smug expression disgusted me and I slapped her across the face.
Ludwig immediately stepped in front of her, "Suzy, that's enough! It was clearly you who refused to take the pendant, causing it to break. What does it have to do with Whitney? Apologize to her right now."
I sneered, speaking in a sinister tone, "Apologize? Fine, I'll apologize to her."
With that, I grabbed the vase from the table and smashed it hard on Whitney's head. Whitney screamed, her head instantly stained red with blood. Ludwig panicked and quickly took out a bandage to stop the bleeding.
I didn't even glance at them, picked up the jade pendant fragments and went upstairs to get my luggage.
Ludwig stopped me when he saw this, "Suzy, where are you going?"
I looked at him expressionlessly and threw the divorce agreement in his face, "To a place where I don’t have to be with you, of course."
I inhaled before saying, "Ludwig, let's get a divorce. I don't want you anymore."
