My friend had to go on a business trip, and insisted that I take his wife to her prenatal checkup.
On the way out of the car, she slipped and nearly fell, so I instinctively helped her up.
A few days later, my friend stormed into my house, furious:
"You killed my child! What are you going to do to make it right?"
"My wife told me you were driving distractedly and didn't stop the car properly—otherwise, why would she have miscarried?"
I was completely confused, and before I could explain, he kicked me to the ground.
I hit the edge of the sofa hard, blood pouring from my head.
I begged him to call an ambulance, but he continued to beat me to death.
Then, when I opened my eyes, I was back to the day my friend left for his business trip.
"Ethan, I'll be out of town for a few days, and I’m really worried about my wife being pregnant at home. Can you help me drive her to work and back?"
"Don’t worry, I’ll reimburse you for the gas money while I'm away. I won’t take advantage of you."
Michael Carter's voice echoed in my ears.
Looking at the familiar scene in front of me, I nervously ran my hand over my head.
Thankfully, my head was still smooth and without a scratch.
After a moment, my anger flared, and I clenched my fist and slammed it into his face.
A dull thud echoed as Michael Carter’s face was knocked sideways.
His cheek swelled up, and blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
In disbelief, he yelled,
"What the hell is wrong with you?!"
"Are you crazy? Are you like a rabid dog, attacking anyone you see?"
Hearing his angry voice, I could easily imagine the pain he felt.
Pain meant this wasn’t a dream.
I had truly been reborn on the day Michael Carter left for his business trip.
In my previous life, I had agreed to his request and had been there for his wife, serving her constantly.
Rain or shine, I always showed up on time for her.
Even when she had her prenatal checkup, I stayed in the car and waited for an entire afternoon.
The day before Michael Carter returned from his trip, his wife slipped on a banana peel right in front of my car and almost fell.
I rushed forward and shielded her with my own body.
She was fine, but I scraped my arm badly.
Despite that, I didn't care and was just relieved that the pregnant woman was unharmed.
Then the next day, she miscarried, and they blamed me for it.
Michael Carter came storming in, enraged, and beat me to death.
No matter how much I begged him, he refused to call an ambulance.
"If it weren’t for you, my child wouldn’t have died!"
"Then you should pay with your life and go serve my poor child in the afterlife!"
Just before dying, I heard those words.
I was filled with rage and bitterness, spat out blood, and died in anger.
Recalling this, I felt my face turn pale and my body waver.
Michael Carter’s concerned voice reached me:
"Why do you look so pale? What happened?"
We had been friends for twenty years, and his temper was always mild.
Even after I punched him, he would still soften and ask if I was okay.
But in the past life, he became a beast, beating me to death.
In my dazed state, his maddened appearance seemed to overlap with the way he looked this time...
I steeled myself and spoke:
"I can't help you."
"Why?"
Looking at Michael Carter's puzzled expression, I continued:
"The few days you’re gone, I’m planning to travel, so I won’t be able to take care of your wife. You should find a caregiver."
Michael Carter furrowed his brow.
"You really want to leave right now? My wife is struggling with the pregnancy, can’t you help us out?"

"How about this? When I get back, I’ll reimburse you for your travel expenses. You can stay with my wife for a few days. What do you say?"
I tried to soften my tone, afraid that refusing would lead to the same tragic end as last time.
No matter how he asked, I was determined to refuse.
After sending him off, I called my boss and requested a transfer.
Before he returned from his trip, I would move to a different city where no one would know my address.
That way, the terrible events of my previous life would never happen again.
But on the third day of his business trip, Michael Carter showed up, coming from another city to find me.
"Ethan Summers! You caused my wife to miscarry, and I’m going to beat you to death!"
He kicked me in the chest, and I stumbled into the corner of the wall, the taste of iron in my mouth.
I didn’t expect to be ambushed with such a violent attack just from opening the door.
I dodged to the side, trying to avoid his blows.
Michael Carter was a black belt in taekwondo, while I was just a weak programmer, no match for him!
"No... it wasn’t me!"
My forearm went numb from the punches, and his knee drove into my stomach, making me see stars.
"I haven’t even seen your wife these past few days, how could I be the cause of her miscarriage?"
I shouted hoarsely, but my head slammed into the wall, and my ears rang.
Michael Carter's eyes turned bloodshot as he grabbed my throat, choking me so hard I could barely breathe.
"How dare you lie! My wife told me herself!"
"You followed her and deliberately pushed her, causing her to miscarry!"
As he spoke, his anger grew, and his grip tightened. I was suffocating, my vision going dark.
I desperately tried to pry his fingers off, my nails digging into his hand, leaving bloodstains.
With what little breath I had left, I gasped out:
"You have no proof... she’s lying, trust me!"
"I’ve been your brother for so many years, what could I possibly gain from doing this?"
Having learned from my previous life, this time, I stayed home as much as possible when I wasn’t at work.
To avoid any contact with his wife, I even blocked her number.
At this point, I was sure I was being framed, and they had no evidence!
Maybe it was my sincerity that moved him.
Michael Carter slowly loosened his grip, and I felt a flicker of hope.
But to my shock, he pulled out a surveillance video from his phone.
He said each word with deadly precision:
"Now, how do you explain this video?"
In the video, Michael Carter’s wife, Samantha Lee, was walking with her pregnant belly.
Soon after, my figure appeared, following her as she walked into an alley.
Before long, a woman’s heart-wrenching screams were heard.
Since the video came from a blind spot of the surveillance, it didn’t show what happened between me and Samantha Lee.
But it clearly put the blame on me.
The most troubling thing was, the alley looked so familiar.
I had indeed been there recently.
But I hadn’t seen Samantha Lee at all.
Seeing my stunned silence, Michael Carter grew even angrier and slammed his phone into my face:
"Now what do you have to say?"
"I’m going to beat you to death today to avenge my dead son!"
The sharp pain in my head made my vision blur, and I knew if I didn’t figure something out, I’d end up facing the same tragic end as in my previous life.
Time was running out—what should I do?
I knew the video was fake, but how could I prove it?

My mind was racing, and just as his fist came down, I shoved him away with all my strength, my voice urgent:
"This video is fake! I never hurt her!"
"Then bring your wife here and confront me in person!"
Michael Carter's fury twisted into a sarcastic smile as he grabbed me by the arm, lifting me off the ground and slamming me back down.
I felt like my body had shattered, my organs twisted in pain, and I curled up from the agony.
He picked up his phone and shoved it into my face:
"Fake? When has surveillance footage ever been faked?"
I stared at the screen, desperately searching for a flaw.
Suddenly, my eyes lit up.
I pointed to the distorted timestamp on the screen and said,
"This is the proof! Maybe the video isn't fake, but it's been maliciously edited."
"I haven’t even seen your wife these past few days! Don't you believe me? We're supposed to be brothers!"
I pleaded with him, trying to get him to calm down.
After a tense silence, Michael Carter finally cooled down.
He studied the video more carefully and soon realized it did indeed look fabricated.
Realizing his mistake, he hesitated before speaking:
"You and my wife have no grudge. Why would she frame you?"
"Why would she go as far as to sacrifice a child for this?"
Why would she frame me? How should I know?
Since the previous life, these two had relentlessly tormented me. I’d like to ask them why, too!
Clutching my injured stomach, I slowly straightened up and said,
"Why don’t you ask her yourself why she did this?"
At my cold words, Michael Carter knew he was in the wrong. He stormed to the balcony to make a call.
Before he could finish, the doorbell rang.
I stumbled to the door, my face covered in bruises, only to find several police officers standing outside.
They flashed their badges and said sternly,
"Mr. Summers, we've received a call accusing you of attempted murder. The evidence is solid. Please come with us."
My mind went blank.
If Michael Carter hadn't slammed me on the back, I might have been frozen in place.
He frowned and asked,
"What call? Ethan Summers has been with me this whole time, he couldn’t have committed a crime."
"Officers, are you sure you have the right person?"
The lead officer paused when he saw Michael Carter, then replied,
"It was your wife who reported the crime."
"And we already have evidence, which is why we're here."
As the words fell, Michael Carter turned to me, disbelief written all over his face:
"Ethan Summers, I thought you were my good brother! You’re actually lying to me?"
He grabbed my collar, leaning close to my ear and muttered,
"If you're the killer, even if it costs me my life, I'll send you to hell!"
His voice was soft, but icy like a venomous snake.
I suddenly felt a chill, unable to say a word.
With the police present, he didn’t strike me. He just followed me to the police station.
As soon as we arrived, I saw Samantha Lee sitting beside me.
Her face was pale, her eyes sunken.
There was a faint smell of blood around her, and she was wearing a hospital gown, looking completely exhausted.
Seeing me, she almost screamed,
"It’s him! He’s the one who made me miscarry!"
Michael Carter’s eyes filled with pain as he saw this.
I furrowed my brow, trying to keep my composure:
"Officers, that surveillance footage is fake! I’m being framed!"
Before I could finish, Samantha Lee rushed forward and slapped me hard.
