Micah's POV My sister caught the eye of Gavin Roarke, the ruthless and temperamental leader of a powerful mafia clan. But she already had someone she loved. So, the day Gavin came to claim her, she drugged me unconscious and sent me in her place, since we looked exactly alike, down to the last eyelash. Then she ran off overseas with her boyfriend and vanished without a trace. As such, I was forced to marry Gavin. But I never treated him kindly, and he never truly cared for me either. To him, I was just a stand-in. When he was in a good mood, he’d toss me a sweet word. When he wasn’t, his hand was quicker than his smile. Ten years later, my sister suddenly returned. She went straight to Gavin and told him I’d schemed against her all those years ago, that I’d pushed her into the river to take her place and marry him. She said she’d lost her memory because of me, and that’s why they’d been separated for a decade. Gavin was so furious that he immediately ordered his men to lock me in the basement. When my sister came to “visit,” she wrapped a chain around my neck and pulled it tight. “Sorry, little sister,” she whispered, her face twisted with guilt and greed. “As long as you’re alive, my lie will never hold.” Then, I died choking on my own breath, eyes wide open, filled with disbelief and hate. When I opened them again, I was back on the very day Gavin came to claim my sister. This time, I stepped forward and calmly said, “Sis, you can go with your boyfriend. I’ll marry Gavin instead.” If destiny insisted someone had to be Gavin’s lover, then this time, it would be me. —— “Mom, Dad, please! I don’t want to marry him!” The voice of my sister, Mallory Crowe, was sharp with panic. Her crying was so close that it snapped me fully awake, making me realize I’d been reborn. “I heard Gavin’s killed people without blinking,” she wailed. “They say he’s tortured women to death! If I marry him, it’ll be the end of me! More importantly, I already swore I’d only marry Colin. If I can’t be with him, then I’d rather die!” My mother’s voice trembled as she sobbed, “But we can’t afford to offend Gavin. If you refuse, our whole family will be ruined.” My father wiped his tears. “It’s my fault. I can’t even protect my own daughter. If they come for me, I’ll let them beat me to death. Maybe that’ll make them think twice.” Mom glared at him. “Are you out of your mind? He’s the boss of the Black Swift Gang! Your life means nothing to a man like him!” Before Mallory could say another word, I spoke up. “Sis, you can go with your boyfriend. I’ll marry Gavin instead.” The room went dead silent. Everyone stared at me in shock, especially Mallory, whose eyes nearly popped out. “We’re twins,” I continued evenly. “We look exactly the same. I’ll marry him in your place. He’ll never notice.” Mom hesitated. “It’s noble of you to take her place, but Gavin’s not someone we can fool forever. What if he finds out one day? He’ll kill us all!” But Dad finally made a decision. “Mallory, go. Take the money I’ve saved. That's half a million. You and Colin can go to Australia. The Roarkes’ reach won’t extend that far.” When he said that, there wasn’t a hint of worry about me in their eyes, only relief that their beloved eldest daughter could escape. As for me, the younger twin, I’d always been the expendable one. Mallory thought for a long while before saying coldly, “Then let’s hold a fake funeral for Micah. Say she fell into the river and drowned. That way, when I disappear, no one will question it.” Once the plan was set, they packed my things and sent me off to the Roarkes' car. In my past life, I’d woken up terrified inside that car, full of hatred and fear. That resentment poisoned our entire marriage. For ten years, Gavin and I were nothing but enemies sharing a bed. But truth be told, aside from the rumors, Gavin was handsome, strong, rich, and fiercely protective of his own. So, marrying him, I’d actually climbed higher than anyone could imagine. When he first met me, his eyes were dark and unreadable as he said, “I only have one rule. Do as I say.”

Micah's POV I immediately grabbed his hand and said sweetly, “Don’t worry, honey. From now on, I’ll be on my best behavior. If you tell me to go east, I won’t even glance west!” Gavin froze for a second, clearly surprised. Then he waved his assistant over. “Get her everything she needs. As my wife, she shouldn’t look so plain.” And just like that, I suddenly owned an entire wardrobe full of luxury brands. Even the diamond watches came by the shelf, not by the piece. During the day, while Gavin was busy with his business affairs, I stayed home and cooked for him, three meals a day, plus dessert after dinner. Everything was made by hand, and I made sure each dish was his favorite. At night, I’d transform into a sweet, obedient, and affectionate wife, then pamper him until he was utterly satisfied. Gradually, his attitude toward me began to change. He wasn’t as distant or formal anymore, and he even started taking me with him to public events. Then one day, I got a call from my mother. She said my father was gravely ill and wanted to see me. But the moment I walked through the door, I saw my “sick” father lying sprawled on the couch, picking his teeth. In front of him sat the stripped bones of a pork knuckle he’d clearly just devoured. “Dad, you’re not sick?” I asked, my voice flat. “If I hadn’t told your mother to lie, would you have come home?” he barked. Mom jabbed her finger at my temple. “You ungrateful girl! Living in luxury at the Roarke estate, eating and drinking like royalty, while your parents suffer!” “Mom, Dad,” I said calmly, “I remember clearly that on the day I married into the Roarkes, you both texted me, saying from that moment on, no matter what happened to me, good or bad, I was no longer part of our family. You even told me not to contact you again, even if it was a matter of life and death.” I smiled faintly and added, “I still have that message saved, you know.” Mom glared at me furiously. “We said that so we wouldn’t drag you down! Now that you’re living comfortably, you think you can just abandon your family?” “Didn’t Gavin give you money?” I asked, my patience thinning. “As far as I know, he’s been sending you a hefty allowance every month. And this villa you’re living in, wasn’t it also bought by him? What more do you want?” Her face twisted with anger. “You think you can talk to me like that? Did you forget you still have a sister?” My expression hardened. “Watch your words, Mom. I don’t have a sister. I only had a twin, and she drowned years ago.” Mom slammed her hand on the table. “Don't boss us around, you're in our house! But let me get straight to the point. Give your sister one hundred million, and we’ll never bother you again.” “One hundred million?” I laughed coldly. “Where do you expect me to get that kind of money?” Dad’s voice boomed across the room. “Gavin’s worth billions! We’re only asking for a small portion. If you can’t even manage that, you don’t deserve to be his wife!” I sneered. “You won’t be getting a dime from me. And whether I deserve to be his wife or not, that’s not for you to decide.” With that, we parted on bad terms. But a month later, my mother called again. “Micah,” she said softly, “I’ve been thinking. I went too far last time. I’m sorry. Do you have time this weekend? I’ll cook a few of your favorite dishes. Come home for dinner, okay?” It was the first time in two years she’d ever invited me back. Before I could even reply, her voice broke with tears. “Sweetheart, your mom’s getting old. Your dad and I aren’t in good health. Who knows how many more times we’ll get to see you?” I hesitated but eventually gave in. “Alright. I’ll come home this weekend.” When I arrived, Mom greeted me with unusual warmth. She pulled me into the house, where the dining table was already covered with all my favorite foods. I had barely taken my seat when the bedroom door opened and someone stepped out. My heart froze. “Sis? What are you doing here?” The sight of Mallory’s face made my pulse race. We'd agreed that she shouldn’t have come back for another eight years.

Micah's POV “Well, well… long time no see, little sister,” Mallory slowly greeted and sat down beside me, her eyes sweeping over my outfit from head to toe. “This look must’ve cost at least, what, a few grands?” She smirked, then pointed at the bracelet on my wrist. “And that one? At least tens of thousands, right? Gavin’s really generous with you, huh.” She then let out a long, dramatic sigh. “You’re living the dream now, while I’ve been suffering overseas for the past two years.” I smiled faintly. “Didn’t you say before that as long as you could be with your boyfriend, you’d live on scraps and never complain?” “Boyfriend? What boyfriend? You don’t have a brother-in-law!” she snapped. She leaned closer, her tone sharp and deliberate. “Let’s not waste time. I came back to reclaim what’s mine. Starting today, you’ll go back to being you, Micah, and I’ll be Mallory again. After dinner, take off that designer dress and all the jewelry, and I’ll return to the Roarkes in your place. We’ll switch back.” I almost laughed at how shameless she sounded. “Wow, you really are something else. You think I’ll just hand over everything I’ve built these past two years? I worked hard to earn Gavin’s trust, to secure my place in that family, and you think I’ll just give it to you?” Mallory slammed her hand against the table. “Gavin was supposed to marry me! You stole my place and enjoyed my life all this time. Did you really think you could keep it forever?” Standing my ground, I countered, “You didn’t want to marry him back then. You almost got the whole family killed because of your cowardice! But I took your place and saved you. If anything, you should be grateful to me. And for your information, the reason I became Mrs. Roarke, the woman he dotes on, is because I earned it. You think just showing up means you can replace me?” Fed up, Mallory shot up from her seat and shouted, “You’ve gone too far! I already let you live under my name for two years. That was mercy! If you don’t switch back now, I’ll go straight to Gavin and tell him everything!” “I’ll tell him that you were jealous of me, that you pushed me into the river, that you caused my amnesia. Once he knows, you’ll lose everything. He’ll punish you himself, and you’ll wish you were dead!” she hissed. Slowly, I rose from my chair, my voice calm but cold. “Go ahead. Tell him. But when you do, I’ll play the recording of that day, the one where all of you begged me to take your place and marry Gavin. Let’s see how he reacts when he hears that. If I go down, we all go down. The whole family, together.” Before Mallory could reply, my mother stormed toward me and slapped me across the face. “You’ll switch with your sister today, or I swear I’ll die right here in front of you!” she screamed. I clutched my cheek, tears stinging my eyes despite my efforts to hold them back. “Mom,” I whispered, my voice trembling, “until I saw Mallory again, I honestly believed that somewhere in your hearts, you and Dad still cared about me. But now I see clearly. You’ve only ever had one daughter, and it’s not me.” I straightened my shoulders and added, “I’m not switching back. Not now, not ever. So, stop dreaming.” Then I turned to leave. I wanted to get out of that house, out of their lies, before I lost control. But just as I stepped toward the door, something slammed into the back of my head. Pain exploded through my skull, and the world tilted sideways. I hit the floor hard, my vision blurring, blood trickling down the back of my neck. Through the haze, I saw Mallory clutching a ceramic bear, the one I’d given her years ago for her birthday. With a trembling voice, Mom panicked, “Mallory! That was too hard! You didn’t kill her, did you?” Mallory looked down at me, saw my eyes still open, and exhaled in relief. “She’s still breathing.” Then she crouched beside me, patted my cheek, and said in a low, cold voice, “See, Micah? This is what happens when you don’t know your place. If you’d just agreed to switch with me, none of this would’ve been necessary.” My head throbbed violently. Darkness crept at the edges of my vision. But even as everything started to fade, I clenched my teeth and fought to stay awake.

Micah's POV Mallory kept talking as if she owned the room. “I even lost twenty kilos and copied your haircut so we’d look identical. Once I wear your clothes, even Mom and Dad won’t be able to tell us apart. Gavin definitely won’t recognize the difference. From now on, you play the part of Micah and do as you’re told. Otherwise, don’t blame your sister for being ruthless.” As my parents started taking off my clothes, someone knocked at the door. The whole house went taut with tension. “Who is it?” Mallory asked. “It’s me.” It was Gavin. I was about to shout when Dad clamped a hand over my mouth and dragged me back into the room. "Mallory, why haven't you opened the door yet?" Gavin demanded. Finally snapping back to her senses, Mom yanked the carpet to cover the bloodstain on the floor. Only then did Mallory walk to the door and open it. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “I happened to be passing by and thought I’d pick you up.” Gavin frowned when he saw her. “You weren’t wearing that outfit when I left.” “I dirtied the other one, so I changed into this old dress,” she lied. “Perfect timing, you can take me now.” From inside the bedroom, I could hear everything. If Mallory walked out, then the past would repeat itself. She’d never let me live, for only the dead could keep her secret. Dad glared at me, mouthing for me to stay silent. I nodded in response but reached for the chair beside me. In one motion, I shoved it, and it crashed to the floor with a loud thud. Dad snapped, grabbed my hair, and slapped me hard. “What was that noise?” Gavin stopped and turned toward the bedroom. But Mallory stepped in front of him. “Nothing. Probably the cat knocked the chair over.” Despite her reason, Gavin still hurried to the doorway. He bent down and touched the dark red pool on the floor. “This is blood.” Then he tried the bedroom doorknob and found it locked. Heart thumping, Mallory made up some lies again. “This blood’s probably from our cat being in heat and leaving stains on the floor. It’s filthy. Come on, let’s get your hands washed.” She also tried to pull him away while saying, “Dad’s drunk and sleeping inside. Let’s not bother him. Let’s go clean up.” While Dad was distracted by them, I slipped off my bracelet and hurled it at the door. The metal hit with a clanging sound. Hearing that, Gavin’s expression went icy. He took a step back and kicked the door open. What he saw froze everyone. I lay on the floor, covered in blood, and Dad was over me, whipping me with his belt.
