The new graduate trainee asked for help in our team's Slack channel late that night.
She said her apartment was flooding after the hurricane, and asked if my brother could drive her to a nearby hotel.
In my previous life, I gave in. I let Jake go.
The next morning, Emily showed up clutching a torn bra.
Through tears, she accused my brother of sexually assaulting her.
Jake had just started his freshman year of college. No matter how much he denied it, no one believed him. He was suspended from school.
Our family business took a devastating hit. My father suffered a stroke. My mother collapsed from the stress.
Emily rode the wave of public sympathy, won a 1-million-dollar civil settlement, secured a permanent position at the company, and took the promotion that should have been mine.
She even came to gloat in front of me.
"Sarah, everything I have today, I owe to you. If you hadn't asked Jake to pick me up that night, I never would've made it this far."
When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the night the hurricane hit.
Emily was asking for help in our team's Slack channel.
My apartment's flooding. The rain is so bad I can't get a ride anywhere.
Sarah, could your brother do me a favor and drive me to a nearby hotel?
I reached over and stopped Jake, who was about to grab his car keys.
Then I replied in the channel.
Jake isn't going. Send me your address. I'll contact emergency services and the city's flood-response team.
Chapter 1
The channel went silent.
A few seconds later, Emily sent a voice message.
Heavy rain hammered in the background.
"I really don't want emergency services involved."
"They have people whose lives are actually in danger tonight."
"I'd feel terrible taking resources away from them."
"My apartment isn't that bad yet."
"It's just your house is only ten minutes away, and Jake has that four-wheel-drive Jeep. I was hoping he could drop me at a hotel nearby."
Almost immediately, coworkers chimed in.
Emergency services are probably overwhelmed tonight. If we can avoid adding another call, maybe we should.
A four-wheel-drive Jeep should handle flooded roads way better than an Uber.
I replied.
The city issued a stay-at-home emergency order.
My brother is nineteen. He is not emergency personnel, and his Jeep is not a rescue vehicle.
If something happens to him, who's taking responsibility?
Emily answered almost immediately.
You're right. I shouldn't have asked.
I'll figure something else out.
I thought the conversation was finally over.
Then another message appeared.
Emily:
If I don't show up for work tomorrow morning, please call the police.
The Slack channel exploded.
Before anyone else could respond, our boss joined the conversation.
Michael:
Sarah, Emily reports directly to you.
I trust my managers to make sure nobody on their team is left stranded when people need help.
Jake looked over from the couch.
"Maybe I should just do it."
He was only nineteen. Still young enough to believe helping people couldn't possibly ruin his life.
I gently pushed his keys back onto the table.
"Sit down."
"But didn't she say her place was flooded? That she couldn't stay there tonight?"
"If her apartment is flooding," I interrupted, "there will be people helping her, not you."
I turned back to Slack.
Jake has personal commitments tonight and won't be going.
Emily, if you're truly in danger and we don't hear from you by tomorrow morning, I'll report it and make sure someone checks on you.
Almost instantly, someone replied.
Sarah... don't you think you're being a little cold?
Others echoed the same sentiment.
The notifications kept pouring in.
Then Michael tagged me directly.
I hope you're thinking this through carefully.
How we treat people during a crisis says a lot about our character.
A moment later, Emily uploaded a photo.
Dark floodwater covered the hardwood floor. A pair of pink slippers floated beside her bed. The water had already reached the mattress frame.
Then came one final message.
Emily:
Boss, please don't blame Sarah.
Chapter 2
She's probably just worried about her little brother. The weather is terrible out there.
I'll wait a little longer. Maybe the rain will let up.
The effect was immediate. The Slack channel exploded.
The storm isn't getting any better tonight.
Sarah, you own a house on high ground. Not everyone has that kind of privilege.
Jake wouldn't be rescuing anyone. He'd just be giving her a ride to the nearest hotel.
My father stepped out of his home office after hearing the notifications chime nonstop. He glanced toward the windows, where rain slammed against the glass.
"Don't let Jake go out tonight."
His words were exactly the same as they had been in my previous life.
Back then, I hadn't listened.
Emily had just graduated from college. She was new to the city.
Living alone. Trying to build a career.
I thought helping her was simply the decent thing to do.
Weeks later, protesters gathered outside our house. They carried signs calling my brother a rapist. Someone splashed red paint across our front door. Reporters camped outside for days. Clients abandoned our family business overnight.
My father collapsed from a stroke. My mother suffered a heart attack after being surrounded by screaming strangers who threw eggs and garbage at them.
I could still see them lying on the pavement, reaching toward me.
That was the day I finally understood that blind compassion can destroy the people you love most.
My phone vibrated again. Another notification. Michael had tagged me.
Sarah, the Regional VP decision is being finalized next week.
Leadership isn't measured by quarterly numbers alone.
People remember how you respond when someone on your team needs help.
There it was. No direct order. No mention of Jake. Just a perfectly crafted reminder that my promotion depended on whether I appeared compassionate enough.
I rested my fingers on the keyboard before replying.
My response is fully consistent with the company's emergency procedures.
Emily, send me your full address and apartment number.
If the flooding has made it unsafe to leave, I'll contact the city's flood-response team and coordinate with emergency services if necessary.
Her answer came almost instantly.
Please don't.
I'm renting an illegal sublet.
If emergency services show up, my landlord will throw me out.
I just graduated. I can't afford to lose the only place I have.
The sympathy in the channel shifted entirely toward her.
She's already dealing with enough. Don't hide behind company policy.
I was the one making things difficult for Emily?
Did any of them stop to think that Emily was the one putting me in an impossible position?
I always thought Sarah genuinely cared about her team. Maybe I was wrong.
She could help someone in need, but instead she's just watching it happen.
Poor Emily. Having a manager like that must be awful.
I let out a quiet laugh.
Anyone who believes Emily needs a ride is welcome to volunteer.
My brother isn't leaving this house tonight.
I hit Send. Muted the channel. And locked my phone.
If standing my ground cost me the promotion, or even my job, so be it.
A second later, Jake's phone lit up.
He frowned and turned the screen toward me.
Emily Carter wants to connect with you.
She had somehow found his private account.
Her connection request contained only one sentence.
I'm sorry for causing trouble. I never wanted to put you in the middle of this.
I took the phone from his hand.
Decline. Blocked.
Jake looked surprised. "She seems nice. I don't think she's trying to manipulate anyone."
I looked him straight in the eye. "Jake, remember this."
“They call emergency services. They contact building management. They find a real solution. The only reason someone would ignore every proper channel and insist on coming to you is because they need something from you that has nothing to do with being rescued.”
He blinked. The words clearly lingered in his mind.
I gently nudged him toward his bedroom.
"From this moment on, you stay inside. No going outside. "
He nodded. "I promise."
His bedroom door clicked shut.
Only then did I finally allow myself to breathe.
Chapter 3
My eyes burned.
This time, I wouldn't let my brother or my family be destroyed again.
The next morning, I had barely stepped into the office when someone screamed from the hallway.
"Someone get up there! Emily's at the edge of the rooftop parking deck! She's threatening to jump!"
I had heard those exact words in my previous life.
A sharp ringing filled my ears.
For a moment, the room tilted beneath my feet, and I nearly lost my balance.
Then I followed the crowd up to the rooftop parking deck.
Rain still lashed across the building. The wind howled between the surrounding towers.
The scene I had seen before appeared in front of me again.
Emily stood near the edge of the rooftop parking deck.
Her business-casual outfit was wrinkled and soaked from the rain. In her trembling hand was a piece of torn fabric she had been clutching like evidence.
The moment she saw me, her eyes locked onto mine.
Tears immediately filled them.
"Sarah... Jake raped me!"
"His semen is all over this!"
Emily raised the torn piece of fabric, her fingers shaking.
"Sarah, I never wanted things to get this far. But every time I close my eyes, I see what happened last night."
"I'm scared. My whole life has been destroyed because of your brother."
Whispers spread through the crowd.
More employees looked at me with suspicion.
Michael turned to me, his face tight with alarm.
"Sarah, if your brother knows anything about this, call him. Right now."
I looked him straight in the eye.
"My brother never left the house last night. He couldn't have assaulted her."
I pulled out my phone and tapped Jake's name.
After a few rings, his face appeared on FaceTime.
"Sarah?"
I turned the screen toward Emily.
"Jake, where are you?"
"At home."
"Did you leave last night?"
Jake frowned.
"No. I stayed in my room like you told me. I was playing games the whole night."
Emily's head snapped up.
"You're lying."
Her voice shook as she stared at the phone screen.
"It was you."
"You came to find me last night! You were wearing a black jacket. You were driving that black Jeep!"
Tears streamed down her face.
"You ripped my bra off. These bruises on my neck. You did this to me."
Jake froze.
His face flushed a deep crimson.
Faced with the accusation, and the horrified stares around him, he was so shaken that only a few words came out.
"That's a lie! I was gaming at home all night!"
Emily reacted as though he had just humiliated her all over again.
She let out a hysterical scream.
“You’re lying!”
“It was you last night!”
“You told me your sister might act cold, but she actually cared, and that she had sent you to pick me up. That’s why I got in your car!”
Tears streamed down her face.
"I have a boyfriend. Why would I ever lie about something like this?"
The way my coworkers looked at me became even colder.
“Rich kids really are something else. They can do something like this and still stand there denying it without a hint of guilt.”
“Someone like him needs to be investigated. His whole family’s company should be looked into.”
“This probably isn’t the first time he’s done something like this. What a monster.”
Jake's face drained of color. Surrounded by accusing stares, he looked like a frightened kid who couldn't even process what was happening.
“I was playing games in my room the entire night. I have witnesses!”
“If you don’t believe me, ask—”
Before he could finish, Emily suddenly burst into tears.
“Sarah is your sister. Of course she’s going to take your side!”
She was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
“I was hurt. I was violated. And now I have to stand here while you turn everything around and accuse me instead? Are you trying to push me until I have no choice but to die?”
Seeing her like that, the crowd became even more emotional.
“This is too much! Just because she's an intern and doesn't have the money or connections your family does, you think you can get away with this?"
“He did something wrong, and now he’s trying to make the victim look guilty? How is that fair?”
A few angry male coworkers clenched their fists and stepped toward me.
“Stop talking. Someone needs to make him pay for what he did.”
I was about to step forward and stop them when a familiar voice came from behind me.
“Stop!”
I turned around and saw my parents rushing toward the rooftop parking deck.
Chapter 4
"There has to be some mistake!"
A man in the crowd let out a cold, mocking laugh.
"Listen to him."
"Every rapist has a parent standing behind him saying, 'My son would never do that.'"
"Maybe that's exactly why they keep getting away with it."
My father's face flushed red.
"Our front door has security cameras. If Jake left the house last night, it'll be on the footage."
Emily answered almost instantly.
“A security camera you installed yourselves doesn’t prove anything.”
“How do we know the footage wasn’t edited? You own the system. Changing the records wouldn’t exactly be difficult for someone with your resources.”
Several people nodded.
“Their own security footage? That proves nothing. Who knows if they edited it to make themselves look innocent?”
“This explains why they’re so arrogant. They came prepared with a fake alibi. They planned this from the start. That’s how ruthless they are.”
My mother's hands trembled.
“You have no evidence. You’re accusing my son based only on her side of the story. That’s slander!”
The moment Emily heard that, she suddenly pushed herself up against the railing.
Her eyes were red, filled with anger and pain.
“Mrs. Brooks, are you saying I would ruin my own reputation just to frame your son?”
“Yes, your family is wealthy. Someone like me could never fight against people like you.”
“Today, I’ll risk my own life to prove that I deserve justice!”
The boss immediately stepped forward, his face turning pale.
“Emily, don’t do anything reckless!”
“Whatever you need, we can talk about it.”
Emily bit her lip, her voice trembling.
“I want them to admit what they did.”
“I want accountability.”
She looked at my parents, her eyes full of resentment.
"I want your family to take responsibility for what your son did."
"If you truly believe in doing the right thing, then prove it with your actions, not your excuses."
With that, she stepped closer to the edge of the rooftop.
The crowd erupted into panic.
“She’s really going to jump!”
“Someone stop her!”
My boss spun around and shouted at me.
"Sarah, she's standing on the edge!"
"Whatever she wants, agree to it first."
“Your family has the money. Is one million dollars really worth more than a human life?”
Emily swung one leg over the railing, her body trembling as she clung to the edge of the rooftop terrace.
“If I die, I’ll haunt Jake for the rest of his life!”
“I’ll make sure everyone knows what kind of monster he is. A rapist. A murderer. I’ll never let him have peace!”
Her eyes were filled with desperation and fury.
My parents were terrified.
“Please, don’t jump!”
“Whatever happened, we can talk about it!”
“We can discuss compensation. Just come back over the railing!”
My father’s hands trembled as he pulled out his checkbook.
I knew what he was thinking. He wanted to get Emily away from the edge first, then investigate the truth later.
In my previous life, my father had written that same check.
He thought money could buy us time to investigate.
Instead, it became the first piece of “evidence” that our family had admitted Jake was guilty.
Seeing my father’s pen hovering over the check, ready to fill in the amount, a flicker of excitement flashed in Emily’s eyes before she could hide it.
“Wait.”
I reached out and stopped my father’s hand.
Under everyone’s stunned gaze, I turned to Emily.
“Emily, I’m going to ask you one last time.”
“Are you absolutely sure the person who came to your apartment last night was my brother Jake?”
Emily stared at the check in my father’s hand. Then she nodded firmly.
“I’m sure. I’d recognize him even if he turned to ashes.”
"There is evidence on my underwear. His DNA is on it."
I nodded.
“Good. Since you’re so certain, I’ll give you exactly what you want.”
I took out my phone.
Emily swallowed, unable to hide the eagerness in her voice.
“A bank transfer? Fine.”
“1 million dollars. Not a penny less.”
I let out a cold laugh.
“1 million dollars? No.”
“I’m talking about the justice you want. I’ll give you that.”
With that, I unlocked my phone.
