After leaving Clark Stane, I married a billionaire.
Just recently, he transferred all his personal assets to me. I tried saying no, but I could not reject his sincerity. He claimed that love was where money went.
He wanted to give me the confidence not to rely on anyone for help. Even the asset transfer itself was to happen in Atila City, my hometown.
Feeling resigned, I walked into the largest law firm in Atila City.
Just as I was about to state the name I had used when I made my reservation, I suddenly heard annoyingly familiar mocking words.
“Hey, aren’t you Yvonne? You’re the one who chased after Clark, weren’t you? Unfortunately for you, he’s engaged now.”
Chapter 1
I froze and turned around slowly.
Right before my eyes were a few familiar faces. They were all from my university.
The man at the center was dressed in a suit and had a frigid gaze.
The air of superiority oozed out of every single pore of his body.
Even after five years, I still recognized him immediately.
Clark Stane.
The silence hung in the air for a while, but in the next second, my former university mates started talking.
“Holy crap, it really is Yvonne? What’s up with her clothes?”
“Are her Hermes handbag and Patek Philippe watch fake? How could she possibly buy them?”
“She’s pretending to be rich in front of her ex, only to discover that this is his law firm. I’m going to die.”
Chuckles filled the room, but I was already used to this.
During our university days, they always surrounded Clark while they watched me make a fool of myself.
Back then, practically everyone in the university knew that I liked Clark.
I brought him breakfast every day, waited for his lectures to end, and went with him to the library to study until dawn.
He never said no to my presence, but he never took the initiative either.
At one time, I came down with a 102 degrees Fahrenheit fever, but I still insisted on watching his debate.
After the competition, I was practically dead on my feet. He had given me one look and said coolly, “Let’s try.”
Just like that, we got together.
He was still as aloof as ever after we got together, but during the finals, he would highlight important points for me. Whenever he saw me dozing off, he would threaten me, “If you don’t study properly, I’m going to kiss you.”
When other girls handed him love letters, he held my hand and said, “I have a girlfriend.”
Sometimes, I drooled at the sight of hot guys playing basketball, and he would cover my eyes with his hand.
Then, the next day, he joined the basketball team as well and said that I could only watch him from that moment on.
Back in the day, I thought that this only meant that he truly liked me, but when we were about to graduate, Clark’s childhood friend, Samantha York, got into our university.
She became too close with Clark, and when they were together, I felt like the third wheel.
I kicked up a fuss about it, but Clark would simply scowl and snap at me, “Yvonne, you’re annoying like this.”
Even so, I did not give up.
I thought that if I just bore with it a little longer, things would be better, so I kept putting up with it until my wedding eve.
That day, a drunk driver ran into my mother, and she died on the spot.
That drunk driver had been driving a Porsche, and it was Samantha.
When I reached the police station, I saw her clutching Clark’s sleeve and crying while trembling.
“Clark, I didn’t do it on purpose. I just felt too sad knowing that you’re about to get married, and I drank too much…”
Meanwhile, Clark stood beside her to comfort her. “Don’t worry. I’ll help you.”
At that moment, my blood ran cold.
That night, I canceled our wedding and asked to break up with Clark.
He did not try to salvage our relationship.
He simply remained silent for a long time before whispering, “Samantha is my sister in all but blood. I can’t just abandon her.”
Later on, Clark defended Samantha in court.
The York family was powerful, and Clark himself had a silver tongue. He managed to twist her crime of killing someone while drunk into a normal accident.
In the end, Samantha was only given a suspended sentence.
On the day the sentence was given, Samantha threw herself into Clark’s arms and wept.
Meanwhile, I sat across them and watched Clark hug my mother’s killer.
My father and I could not accept it and continued suing, but before we got any results from it, my father died from the ordeal and from all the hard work he had to put into the case.
The York family also came to view me as an enemy, and I was cancelled, abducted, and had my naked photos taken.
In the end, I fled the country like a dog with its tail between its legs.
As the past memories came flooding back, I felt sick.
Not wanting to stay any longer, I turned to the receptionist. “Cancel the appointment. I’ll go to another law firm.”
However, Clark scrutinized my haute-couture clothes and luxury jewelry like he was someone superior looking at trash. “There’s no need for you to do that.”
He was just as arrogant as ever. “You look cheap.”
I stared at him for a full two seconds before I thought that I was indeed very cheap for tolerating Samantha for him all those years ago.
I snickered and decided to ignore him. I turned around to leave, only to suddenly hear arrogant laughter behind me.
“You clearly came here for Clark, and you’re still not admitting it?”
“She hasn’t given up, has she? Wasn’t she really tough when she canceled the wedding all those years ago?”
“Right now, Clark is the law firm’s partner and is about to marry someone rich. She must be regretting it.”
Their words made me burn in rage.
I could accept them thinking that my handbag and watch were fakes, but I could not accept them thinking that I still loved Clark.
Setting aside the fact that all the bad blood has made me hate him to the core, I had a husband.
If not for the fact that he was busy acquiring an important company, he would have been here with me.
I turned around and glared at them coldly. “Say anything else, and I’ll rip your tongues out.”
Clark only gave me a cool glance before chuckling. “Yvonne, you’re twenty-eight, not eighteen. What’s the point in not admitting that you came all the way to my workplace to see me?”
The fires of my rage reached my head, and I could no longer stay calm. I looked into his eyes and hissed, “My husband is about to transfer all his assets to me. I came here to ask about the laws related to it. As for chasing after you? Clark, you’re just an ex that I don’t even want to admit I ever had. Don’t you think it’s not appropriate for you to flatter yourself so much?”
The entire place burst into a commotion.
Chapter 2
Then, it was followed by several seconds of silence.
Clark snickered as if he had heard a joke. “Yvonne, use your head before lying. Would you even believe in your own deranged ramblings?”
My university mates were also working in his law firm, so they continued fanning the flames.
“That’s right. You merely rented a car and hired an actor to play along with you. Do you believe you’ve actually turned yourself into a rich woman?”
They started chuckling.
“That scared me. I really thought she married a good man.”
“I think she just got herself a rich, old man.”
I trembled in rage and was about to say something when I heard a screech.
“Yvonne!”
I heard the sound of high heels clacking against the floor.
In the next second, I felt a slap on my face.
Smack!
My head snapped to the side, and my ears rang.
Samantha was fuming in front of me and grabbed my collar. “How dare you still come and see Clark?! We’re already engaged! How dare you still bother him?!”
I finally realized what had happened and was just about to slap her back when someone grabbed my wrist.
I took in that familiar, woody scent.
It was Clark.
He frowned as he said, “Stop with the tantrum, Yvonne.”
I could not believe my ears.
I was the one slapped, but he was stopping me?
When Samantha saw this, a smug look appeared in her eyes.
In the next second, she lunged forward and grabbed my hair. “How could you be so shameless?! You were already pestering Clark all the time when you were in university! You knew that I grew up with him and still decided to butt into our relationship! It’s been so many years, and you still came here?!”
Her sharp nails scratched my face as she slapped me a few more times.
The others burst into a commotion again.
“My goodness, that’s scary…”
“It’s been so many years, and she’s still pestering Clark?”
“Samantha is so pitiful.”
Someone even took out their phones to begin recording. Their cameras were practically in my face.
“Get a clearer shot.”
“We seldom see mistresses coming up to pester their lovers.”
“I heard that she was the one who pursued Clark during university.”
“Simps really do end up with nothing in the end, huh?”
Those discussions crashed into my ears like a tidal wave.
My scalp hurt from all the tugging, and I almost lost my footing, but Clark simply stood by the side and did not drag Samantha away.
When Samantha got tired, she threw herself into his arms and started crying. “Clark, I’m so scared… Will she snatch you back?”
The people around them started comforting them.
“Don’t worry, Samantha. How could Clark like such a woman?”
“That’s right. It’s common knowledge that you grew up together, and he dotes on you the most.”
“Some people just want something beyond their reach.”
I felt like laughing.
Five years ago, when Samantha killed my mother, Clark had done exactly this.
He had stood in front of me and protected Samantha, as I was the one in the wrong.
Really, I should have gotten used to it.
Clark looked down at me and said, “Yvonne, if you apologize now and promise not to lie and cause trouble again, I can clean up this mess for you.”
He sounded like he was being charitable.
I stared at him, stunned, and found the situation ridiculous.
I had not lied, had not pestered him, and had not caused trouble.
How could he treat me like I was some kind of beggar?
My eyes turned bloodshot from rage, and I laughed. “You disgust me, Clark.”
I slapped him in the face.
Chapter 3
A clear handprint soon appeared on Clark’s face.
He did not react, but Samantha went berserk.
“Yvonne!” she screeched, grabbed the coffee beside her, and threw it at me.
Instinctively, I brought my hand up to shield my face. The burning liquid splashed my entire arm.
Burning pain erupted through my entire body. It hurt so much that my face turned pale. My arm quickly turned red, and I even got blisters.
With bloodshot eyes, Samantha continued yelling, “You could hit me, but how could you hit my fiance? Who do you think you are?!”
The onlookers immediately surrounded us.
“My goodness, she drove Samantha to such desperation…”
“She deserves this. She’s the one who hit him first.”
“That’s right. Clark is just too good-tempered. I would have called the police long ago.”
I trembled in pain but continued glaring at her. “You hurt me on purpose. I’m going to call the police.”
Samantha’s expression changed, but soon, Clark grabbed my wrist. He looked down at my burnt arm and frowned. “Enough with this. Come to my office first to treat your burn.”
I tore myself free from his grip. “Get lost.”
Clark’s expression turned dark. “Do you really have to blow things out of proportion?”
I laughed in exasperation. “Am I? I’m the one who got hit, and I’m the one who got splashed with coffee! What’s this? Are you going to pretend the truth doesn’t exist, just like all those years ago?”
Clark’s breathing froze. After remaining silent for a while, he whispered, “Calling the police now won’t get you anything aside from embarrassment. Go treat your arm. You won’t want it to scar.”
I ignored him and called the police.
The police officers arrived twenty minutes later. When the captain got in, he saw Clark and immediately put on a fawning smile. “You’re here, Mr. Stane?”
He sounded like he was there for a social visit.
My heart sank.
The receptionist went up to him and smiled. “I’m sorry. The security cameras broke down last month, and we haven’t fixed them.”
The other employees started talking too.
“She was the one who hit him first.”
“She was also pestering Clark.”
“That’s not all. She even came here to cause trouble.”
Everyone was siding with Samantha. No one helped me.
Even after so many years, some things have not changed.
There would always be people helping those with power twist the truth.
The captain scowled. “Miss, please come with us for an investigation.”
I was in disbelief. “I’m the one who got injured! Why are you arresting her, not me?!”
The captain started getting annoyed. “Please cooperate with us, or we will use force.”
Just then, Clark whispered into my ear, “Yvonne, you’ve always been so arrogant. It’s time for you to learn a lesson.”
I looked into his aloof eyes and felt utterly disappointed.
Back in university, I had asked him why he studied law. He had said that he did it to uphold justice and make sure the world was a fair place.
Back then, I thought that he was amazing, but he only showed that he was going to keep trampling all over the law for Samantha.
He would even step on me.
The Clark I once loved felt like a dream.
I had woken up from my dream, and there was no trace of the Clark I loved left.
I was brought to the police station, and my phone was confiscated.
“Could you help me call my husband?” I asked.
But the police officers answered without even looking up, “Not now. You can do it tomorrow.”
I was pushed into the detention cell.
The women inside were talking to each other. When they saw me, they exchanged looks.
One of them was a woman with short hair. She suddenly snickered, “Hey, aren’t you the mistress who seduced another person’s fiance?”
Then, she picked up a basin of cold water and splashed it on my bed. “You’re sleeping there tonight.”
The others started laughing.
“You look like a witch. Are you telling me that you’re scared of the cold?”
“I can’t believe you’d slap someone else’s fiance.”
I finally realized that they have done this on purpose. Samantha must have told them beforehand.
None of them let me sleep that night.
The moment I closed my eyes, someone would kick my bed.
Some of them even threw trash on me.
At dawn, one of them threw cold water at my face.
I curled up on the cold, wet bed and trembled.
The scratches Samantha left on me hurt, and my arm stung.
But my head grew clearer.
Five years ago, they got my parents killed. They were trying to do the same thing to me.
The next morning, I was finally released.
I felt dizzy, as if I had been drained of all my strength.
A police officer returned my phone to me. “Mr. Stane is kind and won’t pursue this. You can leave now. Stop causing trouble in the future.”
I said nothing and just turned my phone on.
In the next second, I received countless notifications.
The farce yesterday had trended. The uploaded video was clearly edited maliciously. All that was left was me slapping Clark and Samantha crying.
The comments were all filled with insults toward me.
[She must be crazy.]
[I heard that she was a simp in the past.]
[I feel so bad for Samantha York.]
[Mistresses like these should just die.]
Some people had even doxxed me.
Some had even found my grandmother’s address.
My breathing froze.
I quickly found a video. It had been filmed at the entrance to a market.
My grandmother was surrounded by journalists and had countless cameras trained on her face, even though she was already almost eighty years old.
“Is your granddaughter a mistress?”
“Is she sick in the head?”
“I heard that she liked stealing other people’s boyfriends since her university days. Is that true?”
My grandmother stood completely lost in the crowd while hugging the corn and pork ribs she had just bought.
Before I came back yesterday, I had called her and said that I was going to visit her once I was done with my business. I had told her that I wanted to eat her stew.
Chapter 4
I rushed to the old city area in a frenzy. All that remained in my head was one single thought.
My grandmother’s heart was weak. She could not handle shocks.
As I ran up, I saw red paint sprayed all over the walls.
[Die, cheater!]
[Your entire family should die, witch!]
[Shameless!]
There were even funeral wreaths strewn all over the door.
A number of neighbors stood at the stairwell and were talking in whispers.
When I opened the door and walked in, I saw my favorite stew in the kitchen. The familiar scent was in the air, but my grandmother had collapsed at the kitchen door. She was motionless.
“Grandma!”
I ran over to her, but my hands trembled so much that I was almost unable to pick her up.
My grandmother’s face was pale, and she was unconscious.
But all the onlookers refused to help and only criticized me.
I gritted my teeth, carried my unconscious grandmother downstairs and brought her to the hospital.
The light stating that the emergency room was occupied was annoyingly bright.
I stood outside in a disheveled state. My face was still swollen, and blisters covered my burned arm, but I did not care.
A nurse came over with a grim expression. “Your grandmother suffered an acute myocardial infarction and needs surgery right now.”
I grabbed her like she was my savior. “Do it!”
The nurse hesitated. “The chief physician who can do this surgery is currently treating another important patient. You might have to wait.”
I froze. “My grandmother is about to die, and you’re asking me to wait?!”
The nurse looked troubled. “I’m sorry. That patient is of special status. We can’t do anything about it.”
My mind went blank, and I ran into the VIP room.
But the moment I opened the door, I saw Samantha lying in bed. When she saw me, she was first stunned before she smirked. “Yvonne?”
I clenched my fists tightly. “Ask the doctor to save my grandmother first. She’s about to die.”
Samantha blinked. Then, she said in an innocent, gentle voice, “But my heart is hurting too. It’s because you made me so mad yesterday. The doctor is checking on me.”
I almost broke down. “That’s a human life, Samantha! You can hurt me, but not my grandmother!”
My parents had already passed. My grandmother was my only family left. I could not lose her.
Samantha stared at me and chuckled. “Sure. Beg for it, and I’ll ask the doctor to go.”
I only froze for two seconds before I started begging.
When I was forced out of the country, in order to not drag my grandmother into my mess, I had not even dared to contact her during the first few years.
I never dared to tell her all those dirty, humiliating things that had transpired. I only wanted to live safely and for a long time.
I had already lost too many things. I could not lose my grandmother as well. “Please ask the doctor to save my grandmother.”
When I started begging, Samantha giggled.
She walked over to me and looked down at me. “You really look like a dog right now, Yvonne.”
Then, she stomped on the back of my hand.
Pain shot up and I grunted, but she only put more weight into her foot, as if she wanted to crush my bones.
She leaned down and whispered into my ears, “Your grandmother and your parents all deserve to die. It’s their fault for giving birth to such a witch like you.”
I looked up with bloodshot eyes.
Suddenly, someone spoke up from the entrance, “Samantha.”
Her expression immediately changed, and she started crying as she threw herself into Clark’s arms. “Clark, my heart hurts, but Yvonne won’t let me see the doctor! Does she want me to die so that she can get back together with you?”
Clark frowned at me with disappointment. “Yvonne, you were the one who insisted on breaking up with me. Now, you’re targeting my fiancee. What exactly are you trying to do?”
I did not have time to argue with them. I only wanted to save my grandmother.
“Move.”
I should not have hoped for such monsters to do something humane.
Since this was not going to work, I should just contact another hospital.
But right after I started walking, Clark grabbed my wrist. “Are you regretting this? Is that why you keep showing up again?”
I flung his hand off. “Are you crazy?!”
I ran to the emergency treatment room, only to find the medical staff removing their masks.
As they looked at me, they did so with complicated expressions.
“I’m sorry. We did our best.”
I froze.
Suddenly, I could no longer hear anything. It was as if someone pushed down on the mute button.
I brought my head up slowly and saw my grandmother lying quietly on the bed with a white cloth over her body.
At that moment, I realized that I no longer had any blood relatives left.
I felt as if I had returned to the afternoon I lost my mother.
It was like the world had shattered. Even breathing was a herculean task.
Chapter 5
I sat alone in the hospital corridor and did not move for a long time.
My family had left one after another, yet the people who got them killed were still alive. They were even living good lives while they stood above other people.
Why? How could they?!
I cried at the top of my lungs and gritted my teeth in hate. In the end, I could not bear it anymore and rushed into the VIP ward.
I needed them to answer to this!
But before I got closer, I heard Gary York’s voice. He was Samantha’s father. “Clark, you’ve worked hard over the years. If you hadn’t stayed with Samantha, we wouldn’t have known what to do.”
Then, I heard Clark. “Isaac died to save me, and because of her brother’s death, Samantha got bipolar disorder and has been emotionally volatile. It’s only right for me to take care of her for life.”
I was stunned. So, that was how it was. It was no wonder that Clark always protected Samantha no matter what she did, even after so many years.
But why did my family have to die so that he could return this favor?!
Just as I was about to kick the door down, I heard Gary sigh. “What are you going to do with Yvonne Niles? No matter what, Samantha is tied to her parents’ deaths. I don’t think she’s going to let this slide after coming back. I’m worried that she’s going to get Samantha riled up again.”
There was silence for a few seconds. In the end, Clark said coolly, “What does that have to do with Samantha? Yvonne’s parents’ deaths were unfortunate incidents. Her father was already sick. Even if Samantha hadn’t made him angry during that meeting, he would still have died. Besides, it’s been years since it happened. If Yvonne really brought this to court, we don’t have to be afraid.”
My mind went blank.
My father died because of Samantha?
Why was I not told?!
During that instant, I trembled, and my ears rang.
All the things that brought me so much hate and pain were just the tip of the iceberg!
Yet the people in the ward were talking about my parents’ deaths like they were talking about the weather, as if this was nothing.
Hate burned so viciously in me that I lost control and kicked down the door.
Clark’s expression changed, and he called out to me. “Yvonne—”
I rushed over and slapped him across the face.
Clark’s face snapped to the side.
I lunged to the bed.
Samantha was on the bed. I reached out and dragged her down. “You killed my mother, but you weren’t satisfied with it?! You even killed my father and grandmother!”
I was just about to slap her when Clark, yet again, grabbed my wrist.
He scowled as he said, “Calm down, Yvonne.”
I looked up, and I could no longer keep my tears from falling. “How am I supposed to calm down?! You got my entire family killed! My grandmother is dead! I’m going to kill you, Clark!”
Samantha started crying and trembled as she held onto Gary’s sleeve. “Dad… I’m scared… Has she lost her mind?”
Gary’s expression turned sour as he snapped, “Where are the security guards?! Drag her out!”
A few security guards in black rushed in.
I glared at Gary and hissed, “What’s this? Are you going to tie me up and take my naked pictures, just like you did five years ago?”
Chapter 6
Clark stared at me intently. Emotions I could not read surged in his eyes. “What did you just say?”
My chest heaved as tears continued rolling down my cheeks. “I said that Gary abducted me and threatened me with my naked photos!”
Panic flashed in Gary’s eyes.
However, Clark only frowned and said darkly, “That’s enough, Yvonne. Gary is a righteous man. The York family has never committed any crimes. Don’t start resorting to frivolous defamation.”
I felt like I had been stabbed. Just as I expected, even at that point, he did not believe me.
But that made sense. He had never once sided with me.
My vision turned blurry with tears as I said hoarsely, “Of course you wouldn’t believe me. Samantha is forever innocent in your eyes, and the York family is always innocent. I’m always the unreasonable lunatic who can’t control my emotions.”
I wiped my tears away. “But that’s fine. I will have my revenge one day!”
Clark stared at me in dumbfounded silence.
Gary, however, panicked. He pulled a long face. “Why are you still standing there, guards?! Drag that crazy witch out!”
The security guards immediately charged over. I fought back with all of my might. “Let me go, you monsters!”
Clark frowned and said, “Gary, her grandmother just passed away. She’s being emotional. Don’t lower yourself to her level. Send her back first.”
Gary immediately nodded. “Don’t worry. I won’t argue with someone who’s clearly sick in the head. Take care of Samantha for a bit. I’ll send Miss Niles back.”
Then, he turned to me. I saw a gleam of cold ruthlessness in his eyes.
I was dragged out of the hospital. Despite fighting back all the way, no one paid me any heed.
When we were in an underground parking lot, Gary finally stopped walking. “Miss Niles, why do you never learn?”
He glared at me darkly, and I glared right back. “You’ll get what you deserve sooner or later!”
Gary laughed. “What I deserve? The ones with power and money make the rules in this world. How are you supposed to fight against me when you’re so worthless?”
A moment later, a few people in white coats walked over. The middle-aged man leading the group said respectfully, “Mr. York, her admission procedure is done.”
Gary smiled. “Miss Niles is emotionally volatile and violent. She needs treatment. Make sure to take good care of her.”
I finally realized that he was going to send me to a mental asylum. “Are you nuts?! I’m not crazy!”
I struggled hard, but the security guards kept a tight grip over me.
Gary looked down at me. “Yvonne, do you really think anyone would still believe you?”
He casually took out his phone and opened an album. Those nightmarish photos appeared before my eyes. My mind went blank as my face turned pale.
Gary was pleased with my reaction. “I’ve kept your beautiful photos with me. If I upload them now, what do you think is going to happen?”
I trembled violently as my eyes burned with hate. “You’re a monster! All of you are monsters!”
Smack!
Gary slapped me, and my head snapped to the side. My ears rang.
The nurse beside him took out a syringe. Cold light reflected off the transparent liquid inside.
I panicked. “Let me go! Help! I’m not crazy!”
But no one responded to me. All of them mechanically held me down.
The needle drew closer. Just as it was about to pierce my skin, I heard the sound of tires screeching. A clear voice rang. “Don’t you dare touch her!”
A man got out of a car. He was dressed in a black suit, and he was so imposing that everyone stopped breathing.
When he saw me being pinned on the ground, his gaze turned terrifyingly dark.
