After marrying an ice-cold husband and giving birth to an equally ice-cold son, I finally got pregnant with a daughter of my own. At the dinner table, I tested the waters and asked my son whether he wanted a little sister. But he only shook his head. "I already have a little sister." I stared at him, certain he was joking. There wasn't even a stuffed doll in the house. Where would he have gotten a sister? The next second, my husband suddenly spoke. "I cheated. The girl is pregnant. "She had an amniocentesis yesterday. It's a girl." I froze where I stood. My husband only looked at me and went on in that slow, unhurried tone. "I'm keeping the child. The girl is young and healthy, and a child born from her will be smart, too." It felt as if a great hand had closed around my heart. The prenatal report hidden behind my back suddenly pressed down on me until I could hardly breathe. Chapter 1 "Why?" I forced the words out, pressing down the storm rising inside me. I couldn't believe that the husband I had loved for more than ten years had suddenly announced he had cheated. Leonard Pitt met my eyes without flinching. "Six months ago, someone drugged me. I accidentally slept with a young girl. "I gave her money afterward and sent her away, but the girl turned out fertile—she actually got pregnant." The corners of his mouth lifted before he realized it. "When our son heard it was a girl, he begged me to keep her. "You have no idea how happy he was that day." His laughter sounded pleased. My chest went cold. I turned to look at our son. He showed no guilt at all. "I want a little sister. It doesn't matter who gives birth to her." Tears fell before I could stop them. I truly couldn't believe it. How had the husband and son who had once loved me like their lives depended on it become like this? Leonard sighed and handed me his silk handkerchief. "Is it really that serious? Isn't this normal in our circle? I thought you'd be used to it by now. "Don't worry. Once the child is born, I'll send the girl abroad. She won't threaten your position." I pushed his hand away and lowered my head, trying to swallow my sobs. Yesterday, I had still been the most envied wife in our circle. My husband had loved me for over ten years without a single scandal. My son was mature beyond his age, a once-in-a-century business prodigy. How had they both betrayed me without warning today? This couldn't be real. I rubbed my eyes hard, trying to prove it had all been an illusion. Leonard took my chin and wiped my tears. "Enough. Stop making a scene. Aside from a few friends in our circle, no one knows about my affair. "You'll always be Mrs. Pitt. I promise, okay?" It was as if someone had slapped me awake. My hand moved to my lower abdomen. Suddenly, the child there felt absurd. Leonard frowned and tried to pull me into his arms, but I shoved him away. "Get out. Stay away from me. You're filthy." He raised both hands and stepped back. "Fine. I won't touch you. How about I let our son talk to you?" My tears fell onto the back of my hand. I stood up abruptly and overturned the table. "I want a divorce. "I'd rather die than raise your mistress's child." The air went dead still. Leonard's gaze turned cold. Disappointment filled our son's face as well. "Mom, divorce him if you want. I won't go with you. "And the moment you walk out that door, Aunt Ruby will be my new mom tomorrow." The strength I had just gathered drained away. I stood there, wondering if I had misheard him. "Who did you just say?" Ruby Sutton. She was one of my unmarried college students who had gotten pregnant. The moment the pregnancy was confirmed, she couldn't wait to drop out. I had advised her to put her studies first. Ruby had only looked at me with disdain. "Please, Professor. My husband has money. He could afford ten kids, let alone one." At the time, I had only felt sorry for her. I never imagined the child she carried was my husband's. My nose stung so badly I could barely speak. "Why? Why did it have to be my student?" Chapter 2 Leonard rubbed his temples. "I didn't mean for it to happen. I walked into the wrong room that night. Only after I woke up did I realize she was your student." "But I don't regret it." His gaze lingered on my face. "After all, an eighteen-year-old girl really is fresh and young." My mind roared. I lifted my head and stared in disbelief at the man I had loved for more than a decade. I couldn't hold back anymore. I grabbed everything in reach and hurled it at Leonard. He didn't dodge, not even when I had exhausted every bit of strength I had. "Are you done venting now?" He looked helpless and reached for me. I picked up the last teacup and threw it at him. "Get out!" The cup shattered, and a shard sliced my hand open. Leonard's face tightened. He grabbed my hand and forced me to let him treat the cut. His voice remained slow and steady. "Since you already know, I'll have Ruby move in to stay during the pregnancy. "It's her first pregnancy. She has no experience. You've had a child before, so you can take care of her." My head snapped up. "What did you say?" Leonard turned the wedding ring on his finger and pinched my cheek as if I were being unreasonable. "Be good. Ruby will move in later. You'll have to work a little harder these next few months and look after her, good wife. "I've already arranged leave for you at the university. It won't affect your job." I finally couldn't take it anymore and screamed. "How can you be this disgusting? "You want your wife to wait on your mistress? Leonard Pitt, are you insane?" Leonard chuckled and pressed a finger to my lips. "Shh. Keep your voice down. Don't make it sound so ugly. "You don't want your mother, Emily, to find out, do you? She's in the hospital. She can't take any shock. "Honey, if you refuse to behave, I can't guarantee someone won't accidentally say something to her." His smile didn't change, but a cold sweat broke out across my back. He was using my mother to threaten me. Back when he had been a penniless nobody, my mother was the only person who agreed to let me marry him. She had even given Leonard the seed money for his first business. Tears blurred my vision again, but this time Leonard had run out of patience. He glanced at the watch on his wrist, frowning irritably. "Ruby will be here soon. I'll give you five minutes to think." My fists clenched and unclenched. In the end, they fell open weakly. I nodded, numb. As if rewarding me, he kissed my forehead, then went out to pick up Ruby. Our son thought I was in the way. He shoved me aside. He had always behaved like a miniature adult, but now he lost that composure. Even his steps toward the door were bright with excitement. I collapsed helplessly to the floor. Behind me, still hidden away, was the prenatal report I had never had the chance to show him. The front door opened again. My eyes met Ruby Sutton's. Her stomach was already slightly rounded, and when she looked at me, the smugness in her eyes was impossible to hide. "Professor, I'll be in your care from now on." I said nothing. Our son walked over. "Mom, give Aunt Ruby the primary bedroom. You're old anyway. You can sleep anywhere." "Fine." I agreed without hesitation. My husband and son no longer belonged to me. What was the point of clinging to a bedroom? Leonard paused, as if he hadn't expected me to agree so easily. After all, back when I had helped him build his business from nothing, I hadn't been willing to suffer even a single cent of loss. Ignoring his stare, I turned to leave. Leonard blocked my path, his eyes dark. "There's no rush. Since you're being so generous, clean the room before you go." Ruby came forward too and affectionately looped her arm through mine. "Then I'll have to trouble you, Professor. I want my baby to stay close to you and rub off a little of your good luck. "Make sure you clean every corner properly, okay, Professor?" Her tone sounded warm, but she clearly treated me like a servant. Leonard and our son were completely unmoved. My fists clenched on their own. I turned and walked away. Chapter 3 "There are dozens of maids in this villa. They're more professional than I am." The next second, Leonard's words pinned me in place. "Quite a temper. You can leave, but think about your mother. If you won't do it, I'll have her do it." My clenched fists loosened powerlessly. I gritted my teeth and entered the primary bedroom, ready to collect my things. But when our son came in after me, he simply threw everything I owned out the door. Bottles and jars shattered across the floor. When he looked at me, his face was full of righteous entitlement. "Mom, cleaning up like that is too slow. Besides, all this stuff is old. It should've been thrown away already." Leonard reached out, trying to pat my back and smooth things over. "All right, Grace. I'll buy every ocean-view villa in the city and put them in your name. You like the sea, don't you? Stay there for a while." His grand, polished words made me sick. I avoided his hand, finished cleaning the room, and left at once. Half an hour later, a scream came from the primary bedroom. Several bodyguards dragged me upstairs. A bright needle lay half-hidden on the bed. Ruby was buried in Leonard's arms, crying pitifully. "Leonard, I'm so scared. It almost touched my belly. Will the baby be okay?" Leonard patiently comforted her. When he turned to me, his eyes were full of disgust. "Grace Murtaugh, when did you become this vicious? "And you're supposed to be a teacher. Don't you have any tolerance at all? I told you Ruby wouldn't threaten your position. Why do you have to target her? "You hid a needle that long in the bed. Were you trying to kill her?" I was baffled. "What?" Before I could react, our son, who had been silent in the corner, rushed at me. The next second, pain tore through my wrist. That shining needle had been stabbed into my right wrist. My right hand nearly went numb at once. Still unsatisfied, my son swung his fists at me. "Bad Mom! Bad Mom! You wanted to stab Aunt Ruby with this needle, so I'm stabbing you for her!" His blows weren't strong, but my tears still fell. I had always thought my son was too mature, too silent, too much like Leonard. I had always hoped he could act like a real child, that he could cry, laugh, lose his temper. But I never imagined the first time I saw him lose his temper would be for an outsider, and against me. I looked up at Leonard. My eyes had never held such disappointment. "Do you really think I did this?" Leonard did not answer for a long time. Then Ruby suddenly cried out. "Mr. Pitt, my stomach hurts. Is something wrong with the baby? "If I lose this child, what's the point of living?" Leonard held her and comforted her. When he looked at me again, the last hesitation was gone. "Today's incident is your fault. Our son doesn't know better, so endure it." Seeing the wound on my wrist, he rubbed his temples. "Besides, it's not a serious injury. Take care of it yourself. "Don't worry about your mother. I won't take my anger out on her. I have a medical team watching her twenty-four hours a day. Nothing will happen." With that, Leonard carried Ruby away. A sudden cramp twisted through my abdomen. I instinctively called after him. The man turned around, his face full of impatience. "What scheme are you trying now? "Ruby is already like this, and you're still competing for attention. You've been pregnant before. How can you be this selfish?" His scolding blocked every word in my throat. The pain in my lower abdomen grew sharp and heavy, and I couldn't stop Leonard from leaving. I could only reach out to my son, hoping he would help me up. But he pushed me away in disgust and turned to chase after Leonard. My stomach slammed hard against the edge of the coffee table. I could feel blood slowly running down between my legs. Driven by instinctive terror, I used the last of my strength to call after him. "Owen Pitt, stop right there. Your little sister is in my belly. Save her." My son's footsteps finally stopped. Hope flickered back to life in my chest. I softened my voice and asked him to call 911. But a mocking curve appeared at the corner of his mouth. "Mom, you're a liar. Dad said you can't have children anymore. How could you have a little sister in your belly? "My little sister is in Aunt Ruby's belly. Stop pretending, Mom. It's gross." The pain in my abdomen felt like a knife twisting inside me. I tried to explain, but my son had already left without looking back. In the end, a kind maid sent me to the hospital. When I woke up, all I saw was the doctor's regretful face. "I'm sorry. You were brought in too late. We couldn't save the child. "Please don't be too sad. You can have another child in the future." My hand rested on my flat abdomen. Somehow, there wasn't much grief left. There would be no future child. And there would be nothing left between Leonard and me either. Chapter 4 The doctor sighed and left the room. I slept for a few more hours. When I woke, I reached for my phone, ready to contact a lawyer and draft a divorce agreement. Before I could, the emergency department called. "Ma'am, the patient's condition has suddenly worsened. Please come see her for the last time." The calm I had barely regained was ripped open. I tore out the IV needle and staggered toward the emergency center. I found my mother lying alone on a bed in the corridor, with only an intern nurse beside her. "Where is everyone?" I grabbed the nurse's hand. "Where are the doctors? Why is no one here?" Fear kept exploding in my chest. How could there be no doctor in such a large hospital? Hadn't Leonard said he had assigned a medical team to my mother? The young nurse stammered. "I heard Mr. Pitt's wife had an incident, so Mr. Pitt called all the doctors upstairs to examine her." My mind went blank. I instinctively called Leonard. I had no idea how many calls it took before someone answered. On the other end, it was my son's voice. "What is it, Mom? What do you want?" I steadied my trembling voice. "Give the phone to your father." My son's voice was impatient. "Dad doesn't have time. He's with Aunt Ruby for her prenatal checkup. Don't bother us if it's nothing." The call was cut off in the next second. My mother's breathing grew weaker by the moment. I had no choice but to call Leonard's assistant and ask him to transfer the call. "Madam, may I ask what this is about?" My hands shook so badly I could barely hold the phone. I cried out. "Leonard Pitt, my mom is dying. Please send a few doctors down to operate on her, please?" The man fell silent for a moment, then laughed mockingly. "Grace, when are you going to stop? "My medical team is already in place. What are you pretending for? Do you have to compete with a young girl over everything?" I sobbed. "No, my mom really is dying. I'm begging you. I'm really begging you..." Leonard sneered. "Then let your mother die outside." Beep. The call ended. All the strength left my body at once. I could only watch as the white sheet was pulled over my mother's face. I couldn't even cry. I didn't know how long passed before Leonard called again. His voice was relaxed. "How's your mother? The medical team I hired should be decent. I also had foreign medication sent over. "I won't hold your mistake against you this time. Tonight is our son's birthday. Come over. He specifically asked for the cake you make." I answered numbly. "Okay." After hanging up, I returned to obstetrics. I placed the child I had lost into a glass jar, set it inside a gift box, and called a courier. "Take this black card. Make sure this is delivered directly to Leonard Pitt." At the birthday dinner, Ruby Sutton was dressed to the nines, trying to say something to my son. But he shook off her hand and kept looking around restlessly. "Where's Mom? Why isn't she here yet?" Leonard glanced at his watch impatiently as well. "Why hasn't she arrived? Is she still throwing a tantrum?" The next moment, the courier found him. Leonard frowned and subconsciously stepped back. But when the courier mentioned my name, he accepted the gift box. The corners of his mouth lifted before he could stop them. "Does a cake really need to be packaged this elaborately? Fine. I'll reluctantly forgive her this time..." But the moment he opened the box, Leonard's face turned deathly pale.
