After marrying the woman I had been pining for for ten years, Nelissa Ford, I thought that my sincerity could melt the ice around her heart.
However, she exposed my undercover mission to her first love, Jared Hiller, who was a journalist, just to give him a sensational story and boost his career. Her actions ultimately pushed me into the abyss.
Later, I was retaliated against by a drug trafficking gang, stabbed multiple times, and died tragically. I was dumped on the street.
Seeing the news, Nelissa finally lost her mind.
Chapter 1
The moment the sharp knife pierced through my heart, I could no longer feel the pain. I had already endured too much suffering and torture before this final blow.
My fingers were broken off one by one; the tendons in my hands and feet were torn and folded, and burning cigarettes burned into my skin.
As I was poisoned and had injured my vocal cords, I could not even scream out in agony.
"Haha, I never expected the media to help us catch the mole! Damn it! I treated you like a brother, but you're actually a cop! What are you looking at? Dig out his eyes!"
At his command, the henchmen grinned and walked toward me. I lost my eyes amid a soundless scream. Once, I had won the city shooting competition with them.
The torture that lasted for more than ten hours made me so miserable and exhausted. For me, death might be the best way to escape right now. When the fatal blow came, I was actually relieved. I could finally stop suffering.
My heart gradually stopped beating, and my breath gradually disappeared. As death claimed me, my soul began to drift slowly into the air. Looking at my gruesome corpse, I slowly closed my eyes.
I had considered that one day I might sacrifice my life for my profession, because protecting society became my mission from the day I put on my police uniform and swore my oath. I never regretted taking off my uniform three years ago to infiltrate a drug cartel.
I just never imagined... I would die at the hands of my wife of ten years.
After my soul left my body, confusion and helplessness enveloped me. I unconsciously walked toward the house Nelissa Ford and I shared. The house was cold and empty; the warmth and beauty of the past were now nothing but endless emptiness and loneliness.
Shards of broken porcelain lay on the floor. Nelissa always liked to be barefoot at home. I instinctively bent down to pick up the shards, only realizing my death when I saw my transparent hands.
Looking at the porcelain shards, I remembered the last time I saw Nelissa before the incident. We had a huge argument, but I never imagined it would be the last time I saw her alive.
Wanting to provide her ex-boyfriend, the journalist Jared Hiller, with an exclusive scoop, Nelissa revealed that I was an undercover agent in a drug cartel.
Anger and despair overwhelmed me, twisting my heart into a tight knot.
I trembled with rage and roared at Nelissa for the first time, "Are you out of your mind? Do you know how important this mission is? It concerns the safety of so many comrades and informants as well as the happiness and well-being of countless families! How could you tell Jared?"
I had never spoken to Nelissa in this tone before, so she looked at me incredulously, even more furious than I was.
"You're the one who's out of his mind! It's just a mission! What's wrong with telling Jared? Will the sky fall? Let me tell you, Marcus Graham, don't think you're so important or great! Do you think you're some kind of savior? Your monthly salary isn't even enough for me to buy a bag. What right do you have to yell at me like that?
"You're just stingy! You're petty! You're just upset that I'm in contact with Jared! Jared just returned and finally found a job. He's desperate to write a sensational headline article! Is it wrong for me to help him? You're so selfish!"
Listening to Nelissa's words, I felt my heart shatter into eight pieces. "I'm selfish? I helped him find a job when he came back. I bought you whatever you wanted, even if it meant working part-time. I practically gave you my heart, and now, you're saying... I'm selfish?"
I gripped Nelissa's shoulders tightly. "Do you know what you're doing will kill me? Do you know you'll kill me?"
My eyes were red, my emotions surging uncontrollably.
In the midst of the struggle, Nelissa finally erupted in rage, slapping me hard across the face. "Then die!"
After she uttered those words, the place fell completely silent.
I stared at Nelissa in shock. Nelissa looked at her hand and took two steps forward, seemingly lost. In the end, she did not say another word. I turned around and left in despair.
That was the last time we saw each other before I died.
I wondered if she knew that I was really dead now.
Chapter 2
My soul was floating in the living room, and I could not help frowning. The house was in a mess, as if no one had cleaned it in a long time. Dirty clothes that had been worn were placed on the couch, and the coffee table was filled with leftover takeout boxes.
Nelissa could not clean or cook. I took care of all the household chores and never made her do anything; I had spoiled her.
Just then, the doorbell suddenly rang. Footsteps pattered from the bedroom, and Nelissa walked out of the room and opened the door. It turned out she was at home.
It was Jared who came. "Nelissa, I bought you the ravioli you like. I was afraid you wouldn't eat properly at home."
Nelissa smiled and walked toward him. "You treat me well. Unlike Marcus, who only annoys me all the time. He hasn't shown his face for half a month. I don't know where he has gone!"
Jared effortlessly walked into the house, changing into my slippers. "Marcus disappeared? He's not mad about my news report, is he? Not to be mean, Nelissa, but he's so petty. Is this really worth getting so worked up about?"
"Exactly!" Nelissa nodded vigorously. "He talked a lot of nonsense. I refuse to believe that a single report could have such a big impact. He's just petty and unwilling to help you. I've had enough of him!"
The two of them chatted in unison, while I watched coldly from the side. They still thought it was just a news report and nothing would happen.
I suddenly felt curious. If Nelissa knew that I was killed by this report and died so horribly, would she regret it? Would she recognize her mistake? Would she be sad?
I had no idea.
Just like I had no idea if Nelissa ever loved me in the five years since we got married.
Nelissa and I were high school classmates. She was very pretty, loved wearing pale yellow dresses, and had a small dimple when she smiled.
In high school, she was the perfect example of 'everyone's dream girl'. Like every boy experiencing his first love, I paid attention to her and liked her. Back then, she had a childhood sweetheart, Jared.
Nelissa and Jared were the talk of the school. Their kiss under the school trees broke the hearts of countless young men and women.
I once thought I was just a passerby in Nelissa's life.
Unexpectedly, fate had other plans. During a forced blind date after graduating from university, I met Nelissa. She told me that Jared had gone abroad to study as per his family's arrangements and had chosen to break up with her.
Of course, I could not give up on her after learning that. Through my persistent efforts, Nelissa finally became my girlfriend. Six months later, we quickly registered our marriage, and I finally became a true winner in life whom everyone envied.
After our marriage, I doted on Nelissa, never letting her do a single chore.
My brothers all joked that I was afraid of my wife, but I did not care. I only wanted her to be happy, even though I knew... she did not like me the way I liked her.
I always thought that Nelissa would eventually change her mind as long as I gave her my all. However, I did not realize I was wrong until Jared returned home.
The day Jared returned was my birthday. All my buddies and friends had gathered to celebrate with me. It should have been a happy and joyful day, but Nelissa received a phone call and ran out of the restaurant without looking back!
Afraid something might happen to her, I drove after her and saw her run into Jared's arms at the airport. They embraced and wept in the sunset, with Jared kissing her forehead.
At that moment, I felt like a clown, peeping into someone else's happiness.
Chapter 3
From that day on, Nelissa began to meet Jared frequently.
At first, she would try explaining it to me, even though she would seem a little embarrassed. Later, she stopped trying to explain at all.
In order to have her spend less time with Jared, I even used my connections to help Jared find a stable job in his field. However, it all turned out to be in vain.
I had only been away from home for half a month, but Jared had already made himself at home in my house. He said to the bathroom, "Nelissa, I'm going to open a bottle of wine."
After he finished speaking, he did not stare at the wine. Instead, his gaze went to a certain place, exuding malicious intent. I felt a bit uneasy as he reached straight for the award plaque on the wine cabinet.
He held the plaque in his hand, contemptuously observed it for a while, and then suddenly threw it down on the ground! The glass plaque shattered instantly, breaking into pieces.
"No!" I rushed over anxiously to stop him. "That's my father's last award plaque!"
It was not until I fell to the ground that I realized I was already dead. In my spirit form, I could not even protect my father's last award plaque. It was an honor bought with my father's life.
My father... died during a mission.
My mother wept for many nights, clutching this plaque. "Ethan Graham, why did you die so young? You claim you have no regrets and lived up to the police uniform, but did you do right by your son and me? Ethan... You're gone. How shall I live..."
Later, my mother gave me this plaque, which I treasured and kept in my liquor cabinet. Now, that bastard Jared had deliberately smashed it! I wanted to kill him!
Nelissa heard the noise and came out. Looking at the broken pieces of the plaque on the ground, her expression changed.
Jared immediately apologized with a forced smile, "I'm sorry. I accidentally knocked it over... Nelissa, Marcus won't be angry with you, will he? How about I apologize to him? I don't want to drag you into this."
After he finished speaking, Nelissa waved her hand dismissively. "It's okay. It's just a piece of glass. So what if it's broken? It doesn't matter."
I stared at Nelissa in disbelief, my eyes wide with fury as I wondered. I know she did not love me, but how could she treat the honor my father earned with his life like this? To her, was my father's life just a piece of insignificant glass? What kind of woman had I loved for the past ten years?
Suddenly, a phone rang, interrupting their conversation. Nelissa composed herself and answered the phone.
A frantic female voice came from the other end of the line. I recognized her voice immediately. It was my junior from the police academy and my current partner, Hannah Lewis. "Hello? Is Marcus with you?"
Nelissa frowned. "No, I don't know where he fucked off to. He hasn't been back for more than half a month."
Hannah ignored her unpleasant tone. Her voice kept shaking with nervousness. "Oh no... Our informant can't get in touch with him. It must be because of that news report. Something must have happened to him..."
Most of the color on Nelissa's face suddenly faded. "What do you mean? What does it mean that the informant can't get in touch with him? What does it have to do with the news report?"
"Didn't he tell you? Some damn paparazzo wrote about his undercover mission in the headlines, and he lost contact not long after that. According to the informant, he hasn't appeared in the organization for several days... We suspect that he may be in danger."
Nelissa looked dazed as she stammered. "I-Isn't it just news? There were no photos, or even his name... Is it that serious?"
"You have no idea how vigilant the gangs are now! That information is enough for them to dig out the mole! Why would they need photos?"
After Hannah finished speaking, she hung up angrily without waiting for Nelissa to say anything else.
Nelissa paled as she reached out and pulled Jared's sleeve. "Didn't you tell me that the news report was just like a story and there'd be no problems?"
Jared held her hand nonchalantly. "Why do you believe everything you hear? They say something happened, and you immediately believe them? Who knows if they're just spooked and imagining the worst?
"Oh, don't worry. How can they find him without a name or a photo? These people like to make a fuss and scare themselves."
Jared pulled the somewhat flustered Nelissa to sit on the couch. "By the way, when are you divorcing Marcus?"
I froze. My heart, which had long since become still as stagnant water, surged with an endless wave of bitterness and sorrow. The heart that had already gone numb began to ache once more.
Nelissa paused. "I haven't found the right opportunity to tell him."
Jared immediately replied in displeasure, "Is it that you didn't find the right opportunity or that you simply don't want to tell him? I was forced by my family to go abroad, and after fighting against them for so many years, I was finally able to come back to you. I never expected you... to be married!
"Do you know how heartbroken I am? Am I the only one who values our relationship?"
"No!" Nelissa's eyes immediately reddened as she hugged him. "I value it. I care! I've never stopped loving you all these years. You know that!"
Jared was finally satisfied. "Alright, ask him for a divorce when Marcus is back."
Nelissa studied his expression and eventually nodded.
Looking at Jared, who was racking his brains to get Nelissa to divorce me, I just found it laughable.
He no longer needed to treat me like an enemy. One masterstroke from him had managed to kill me, so he did not need to pressure Nelissa into divorcing me.
Jared brazenly moved into my house, acting as if he were the master of the house.
Even in death, I could not find peace. I was forced to watch my wife and her lover have sex right in front of me!
For some reason, my soul seemed to be bound to Nelissa, unable to escape or leave. It was the most agonizing torture!
One day, Jared was cuddling with Nelissa at home when he suddenly received a phone call. "What? Such a bizarre thing happened? Someone died? Okay, I'm coming right away!"
After he hung up, Jared said excitedly, "Nelissa, I have to go out. I have big news!"
Nelissa asked curiously, "What is it?"
"They said someone was tortured and left on the roadside. They seemed to have died. Hey, I don't have a car. Can you give me a ride?"
Nelissa nodded, grabbed her car key fob, and went out with Jared. Arriving at the location his colleague had mentioned, Jared hurriedly got out of the car to take pictures.
Nelissa was a little scared and did not follow him. My soul could not leave her, so I stood with her on the outside.
However, the chatter of the onlookers inevitably reached us.
"What a gruesome death..."
"Yeah, I think that young man must have been quite handsome when he was alive."
"Yes, yes, look at that mole at the corner of his eye. How gentle-looking. What a pity... His eyes were gouged out. What good are his good looks now?"
Hearing this, Nelissa suddenly froze. A terrifying premonition completely overwhelmed her, sending a chill down her spine.
Uncontrollably, she turned and walked toward the scene of the incident. She forcefully pushed through the crowd and finally saw the corpse surrounded by them. Then, her breathing paused completely.
