Everyone knew Amber Sherry was hopelessly in love with me. She would even risk her life for me.
I got into a severe car accident to save her. My health never fully recovered.
Because I had a rare blood type, she was terrified that something else might happen to me. She found someone with the same blood type and kept him on standby. He would donate blood to me whenever I needed it.
I was also hopelessly in love with her.
After she gave birth to Aria, I did not care what people thought. We gave her Amber’s last name—Aria Sherry.
I did not want her to go through another pregnancy, so I got a vasectomy.
Every socialite in our circle was jealous of what we had.
On the day of Aria’s baby dedication, I went back on a whim to the house I had bought when Amber and I got married.
However, the security guard stopped me at the gate.
“This villa is Ms. Sherry’s private property. No outsiders are allowed.”
I smiled and said, “I am her husband.”
To my surprise, the guard gave me a look of disdain and said, “Mr. Jones is Ms. Sherry’s husband. Who might you be? You should’ve checked before trying to impersonate your way in.”
I stood frozen.
Cyrus Jones was my living blood donor.
Chapter 1
I took out a wedding photo and said, “I really am Amber’s husband. Look, this is our wedding photo.”
The security guard did not even glance at it. He tossed it straight onto the ground.
“Don’t try pulling fake wedding photos on me. Ms. Sherry and Mr. Jones live here. Do you think I don’t know my own residents?
“Get out of here! If you don’t leave now, I’m going to have to toss you out myself.”
They were living together.
My blood ran cold. I stared in disbelief in the direction of the house.
My wife, Amber Sherry, had spent two years carefully designing this house. Every detail had been done to my taste.
Not long after we got married, my father came to visit me and had an accident there.
Amber was afraid that the place would bring back painful memories for me, so we bought a new house and moved out.
I never expected it to become a place for her to harbor another man.
How could that be possible? She clearly loved me so much.
I could not believe it. I picked up our wedding photo from the ground and left in a daze.
As soon as I got into the car, my phone buzzed a couple of times. It was a message from Amber.
[Honey, I miss you so much. Is Aria being good today? He’s not giving you a hard time, is he?]
[I’m going to wrap up work as fast as I can and come home early to you two. I’ll bring you that red velvet cake you love. How does that sound?]
[Just thinking about you and Aria makes me so happy. Thank you for being in my life.]
I stared at the message. My chest tensed up, and I could barely breathe.
Before I knew it, tears rolled down my face.
For the past three years of our marriage, Amber had never forgotten a single thing about me. She remembered what I liked, my favorite foods, my go-to cologne, and even the things I could not eat.
She did not want me to feel lonely, so she always came home by 7 p.m. to have dinner with me.
She knew I had gastric issues, so she cooked my favorite meals herself.
She was so worried about my health that she searched the whole country to find a living blood donor to be on standby for me.
That living blood donor was Cyrus Jones, a college student at the time.
After I recovered, Amber told me she had sent him away.
It had been almost a year. How could he be living in our first house?
I wiped the tears off my face and decided to go to the company and confront Amber directly.
Amber and I had been together for a long time. I could not let a few words from a security guard make me doubt her.
He may have just mistaken me for someone else.
When I reached Amber’s company, the secretary politely led me straight to the office door.
“Ms. Sherry, Mr. Smith is here.”
After the secretary left, I pushed the door open and walked in. Amber was sitting upright behind her desk.
She smiled the moment she saw me.
“Honey, what a surprise. Did you miss me that much?
“I was literally just telling myself I’d wrap things up early and head home to you.”
She did not come up to me. Instead, she pointed at her computer and said, “I’m in the middle of a meeting. Have a seat on the couch. I’ll be with you in a minute.”
Amber looked at me the same way she always did. Her gaze was full of love.
Since she was busy with work, I sat down on the couch.
Chapter 2
I thought about what had just happened. I did not know how to bring it up.
Just then, Amber let out a soft moan.
The room was very quiet, so I heard it clearly.
“What’s wrong?”
Amber relaxed her brow and smiled.
“Nothing. I just bit my tongue.”
I gave her a helpless, amused smile. But when I turned to the other direction, my heart clenched tight.
Through the reflection in the window, I saw a young man’s face underneath the desk.
I felt a chill run through my entire body.
I clenched my fists so hard that I could barely suppress the pain.
I stood up and said in a hoarse voice, “Since you’re still busy, I’ll get going. I’m worried about Aria being home by herself.”
Amber put on a pitiful expression and sighed dramatically.
“Ever since we had Aria, I’m not your number one anymore, am I?
“Alright, honey. Please be careful on the road. Text me when you’re home.”
Her words made me want to cry.
I quickly lowered my head so she would not notice anything amiss.
Before I turned to leave, I took one last glance at the window.
Once I was out of the company, I was unable to hold back my tears any longer and started bawling.
I had never imagined Amber to betray me. But the ugly, unbearable truth was right there in front of my eyes.
My vision went blurry.
I remembered the backup phone I had hidden under the couch in Amber’s office.
I pulled out my phone with trembling hands and listened.
Amber’s cold voice came through.
“That was close. Robin almost caught us. I told you, he must never find out.”
Then, I heard a young man reply in a soft and soothing voice.
“Don’t be mad. He didn’t see anything anyway. I just thought it made things more exciting.
“I’m sorry, okay? Let me make it up to you.”
After a short pause, Amber’s tone softened as she responded, “Don’t let it happen again.”
The young man chuckled.
“I knew you’d go easy on me.
“You weren’t really satisfied a minute ago, were you? Let me finish what I started.”
After that, muffled, intimate sounds drifted in and out over the phone speaker.
I clenched my jaw so hard that I tasted blood.
By 7 p.m., Amber came home right on time, just like always. She came home with a cake.
She leaned in to kiss me on the cheek, then said gently, “You must be hungry. Here, have a little something while I cook dinner.”
I watched her back cook under the warm yellow kitchen light. My heart tensed up, and I could barely breathe.
How could the person I heard this afternoon be the same one standing in front of me?
She was being intimate with another man, yet she still acted like she was devoted to me.
A wave of nausea rose in my stomach.
Soon, the food was ready.
It was a feast containing all my favorite foods.
Even the shrimp was already peeled and placed right in front of me.
Even Wanda, the nanny taking care of Aria, could not help but remark, “Madam is so good to you.”
Was she, though?
She still cheated.
Just then, Amber’s phone rang.
She glanced at it, then calmly hung up.
Then, she said casually, “Honey, there’s a small issue at the Southport branch office. I need to fly over there and deal with it.
“I might be back tomorrow, or it could be the day after.
“Take care of yourself while I’m gone. Make sure you eat three meals a day. If Aria gives you a hard time, just hand her off to Wanda.”
I nodded. “Okay, see you.”
Amber kissed my forehead, then kissed Aria, and finally left.
I put down my fork and spoon, handed Aria to Wanda, and got up to follow her.
I was able to catch a glimpse of her screen earlier. The incoming call was from Jones.
Jones, as in Cyrus Jones.
I followed Amber’s car all the way to the hospital. She ran several red lights along the way.
It was obvious she was in a rush.
I held my tensed-up chest and walked closer.
The hospital room door was cracked open.
I could see Amber was frowning as she scolded in a low voice, “Didn’t I tell you not to call me at night?”
She visibly relaxed when she saw that Cyrus was completely unharmed.
Chapter 3
“What happened to you? You didn’t explain anything in your text. I thought you were seriously hurt. I was so scared to death!”
Cyrus looked at Amber with glistening eyes and spoke in a voice that was full of grievance.
“I was too nervous just now. It slipped my mind.”
Amber’s heart softened immediately.
“What is it? Just tell me. Don’t keep me in suspense.”
Cyrus’ eyes lit up and he excitedly said, “W-We’re having a baby!”
“What?!” Amber was stunned.
“I noticed you haven’t had much of an appetite lately. Sometimes, you even throw up. So, when you had your last checkup, I asked them to run an extra test.
“The moment I got the results earlier; I couldn’t help calling you right away.
“Ms. Sherry, we’re having a baby!”
I stood at the door. My face had gone completely pale.
A baby...? Amber was carrying his child.
I thought back to the day she gave birth.
I had knelt by the bed, sobbing, as I looked at her exhausted face after delivery.
I had said in a trembling voice, “Honey, we’re never having another child. You have no idea how scared I was just now.
“You went through so much for me.
“We’ll only have this one. I’m never putting you through that again.”
Then, without telling her, I went and got a vasectomy.
When Amber found out, she got an IUD as well.
She said, “From now on, we’ll only have our little girl.”
She had an IUD. So, how was she pregnant with Cyrus’ child?
Before I could even come back to my senses, Amber had already wrapped her arms around Cyrus.
She said happily, “Our baby is a gift from God. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have found you.
“Cyrus, you’ve put up with so much for me. I’m going to make it up to you ten times over.
“If this one’s a boy, I’ll have him take over the company.”
She took his hand and gently kissed his cheek.
“I don’t mind any of it. Just being with you is all I need. I don’t want anything else.
“Besides, you already made me your husband. Just being your husband already makes me happy.”
Amber held his hand and gently placed it on her belly.
“That’s right. You’re my husband.”
Tears streamed down my face without me realizing it. I gripped the wall and was barely able to stand.
If he were Amber’s husband, then who was I?
Would I be the other man who was not even loved?
I did not stay to hear the rest. I left the hospital in a daze.
Amber, I did not want your love anymore. I did not want you anymore.
The next day, she did not come home. However, her messages arrived right on time.
As always, they were attentive and thoughtful.
[Wanda said you barely touched your breakfast. Did you not like it?]
[I’ll be back tomorrow. I’ll make the beef and tomato stew you like, the one that always hits the spot. Sounds good?]
[Is there anything you want? I can have my assistant send it over ahead of time.]
I barely read what she texted. I simply turned off my phone.
I could no longer tell what was real and what was not. I did not know what she truly felt anymore.
But it did not matter.
I took our marriage certificate to the county clerk’s office. The staff member’s response was exactly what I had expected.
“Sir, this marriage certificate has been voided.
“Your current status is unmarried.”
I had seen it coming, but it still made my heart ache.
I then asked in a hoarse voice, “Then, is she married?”
The staff member hesitated for a while before answering.
“She is indeed married. The spouse on file is Mr. Cyrus Jones.”
Of course.
I calmly took back the marriage certificate and threw it into the trash can.
It turned out that when the pain bottomed out, the tears just dried up.
Three years of marriage, and every moment I thought was happiness was fake.
I went home and started packing my things.
I entrusted Aria to a childhood friend and sent them both abroad.
I needed to do one last thing.
I was going to make Amber sign a document surrendering her parental rights.
Amber came back earlier than expected. She had a cold expression that I had not seen before.
Chapter 4
Amber was still attentive as always. The first thing she did when she got home was to kiss me out of habit.
Then, she went into the kitchen to cook. She even remembered to add half a spoonful of honey to my water.
But I knew her too well. I could see the anxiety beneath her small gestures.
What was she anxious about?
I guessed that something must have happened with Cyrus.
Before I could figure it out, I soon felt drowsy and drifted off to sleep.
I was still sort of conscious, but my body would not move.
I could hear someone murmuring.
“Are you sure this is okay? What if he wakes up and figures it out?”
“He’s not going to find out.”
“It’s just 400cc. By the time the sleeping pills wear off, he won’t even know he was out.”
Cyrus’ voice softened and he said emotionally, “You’re so good to me.”
Amber chuckled and pinched his cheek.
“You’re my husband, silly. Who else am I supposed to take care of if not you?”
“It’s all my fault. I got so carried away thinking about you carrying my baby that I wasn’t paying attention. I fell down the stairs, and he had to end up giving me a transfusion.
“From now on, I just want to be with you and our child. I really hope nothing like this happens again. You know how hard it is to find blood for my type.”
After a couple of seconds, Amber said, “Isn’t that what he’s here for? You two have the same blood type. I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”
No one noticed, but tears streamed down from the corner of my eyes.
A year ago, Amber had made Cyrus my living blood donor because she was worried about me.
A year later, I had become his living blood donor.
It was ironic.
When I woke up again, I was lying in the bedroom.
If not for the needle mark on the back of my hand, I might have thought everything from the previous night was just a dream.
I rubbed my dry eyes. There were no tears left to cry.
Maybe out of guilt, Amber took me to an auction event that evening.
She bid on items worth hundreds of millions of dollars without a second thought and gave them all to me.
Everyone present was envious.
“I’ve always heard that Ms. Sherry spoils her husband rotten. Today, I finally got to see it for myself.”
“Right? Most people drop a few thousand dollars, but she just dropped a few hundred million dollars tonight just to make her husband smile.”
“I really envy her husband...”
I heard all the envious chatter, but I felt only indifference.
After the auction, there was also a charity event.
That was where I saw Cyrus.
Amber explained with a completely calm expression, “He’s the new assistant the company just hired.”
I nodded and did not say anything more. I simply pretended I had not recognized him.
After that, no matter where we went, Cyrus stayed right by Amber’s side.
He stood on one side of her, and I stood on the other.
Some people who had never met me even mistook him for her husband.
Cyrus quickly waved his hands and denied it.
“No, no! I’m just Ms. Sherry’s assistant.”
After saying that, he shot a nervous glance at me.
I forced a bitter smile and walked away.
“I’m going to the restroom.”
When I came out, I saw the two of them standing together.
Amber was smiling sweetly, and Cyrus was bright and enthusiastic. They really did look like a perfect match.
I did not walk over. Instead, I just turned and headed out.
However, Cyrus caught up with me quickly.
“Sir, please don’t misunderstand. I’ve just never been to an event like this before, so I begged Ms. Sherry to let me come.
“I’m so sorry if I caused any problems. I really am.
“I hope you’re not upset with Ms. Sherry. It’s not her fault.”
As Cyrus spoke, he lost his balance and fell right into me.
Behind me was a staircase stretching dozens of feet down.
Amber swiftly rushed over.
I instinctively reached out to grab her. However, Amber pulled Cyrus into her arms instead.
My hand only managed to brush against the edge of her clothes. She did not even look at me.
She was obviously worried about Cyrus.
The weightlessness came. Tears blurred my eyes as I fell.
I tumbled down the long staircase. The pain was overwhelming as I lay in a pool of blood.
