At the company's year-end party, a colleague asks me teasingly about when exactly my boyfriend, Hayden Potter, and I will get married. Hayden's female buddy, Melissa Somers, instantly speaks up for him. "He's not in a rush. After all, Hayden's main priority is his career." At first, I don't think much about Melissa's response. But the next thing I know, I suddenly hear her internal thoughts. [Marriage? When Hayden was sleeping over at my place, he promised me that he'd marry me!] I freeze up on the spot before whirling around to stare at Hayden and Melissa. At the moment, Melissa is taking a sip from Hayden's drink through the same straw he just used. Hayden never once looks at me. In fact, he even has an arm wrapped around Melissa's shoulders. Chapter 1 A faint red lipstick mark was left on the straw after Melissa Somers took a sip from it. However, Hayden Potter, my boyfriend, didn't seem to care at all as he took a huge sip from the very same straw. Noticing my gaze, Melissa said with a smile, "I hope you won't mind, Selina. It's just that the two of us have been best friends for so many years that it's become a habit." Before I could respond, Hayden stroked her hair and said, "It's fine. Lina isn't that petty." The others immediately chimed in with their two cents. "That's right! Mel has been one of the boys for years now, so you don't have to worry about a thing, Selina!" "If there really was something going on between them, would you have been able to get together with Hays?" Just then, I heard Melissa's mocking voice ringing in my mind. [Hays only has room for me in his heart. Who the hell do you think you are? You fool. I bet you don't even know that Hays thinks that you're about as interesting as a block of wood!] My hand froze in midair as I reached out to grab my drink. Amid the chaotic noise around me, I watched intently as Hayden ate the spoonful of cake Melissa held up to his mouth. I had been dating Hayden for three years. He once told me that he hated being tied down, so I never once checked in on him at work or interfered with his social life. In fact, I even worked hard to accept all of his friends, including Melissa, the woman he claimed was "just one of the boys". It wasn't until that moment, when I suddenly gained the ability to hear Melissa's thoughts, that I realized I was just a bystander in their relationship. I was nothing more than a joke in this love triangle. "Hays, today's your third anniversary with Lina, right? What, you're not going to make some grand gesture for her?" Hayden stiffened in surprise. Clearly, he had forgotten about it. However, Melissa hooked an arm around his neck and said flippantly, "Grand gesture? Come on, Hays is a practical man and doesn't bother with all those frivolous things!" She then glanced at me, her eyes glinting sharply. "Right, Selina? You're not like those other materialistic women and won't demand presents, will you?" In her mind, she added, [The underwear he bought you last time is the exact same kind he got for me. Do you seriously think he would put any thought into picking out a gift for you?] Everyone's attention immediately fell on me. My heart clenched in my chest, the pain leaving me breathless as more disgusting thoughts and images assaulted my mind. Smacking Hayden's shoulder none too gently, I asked, "What do you think?" Chapter 2 Hayden stiffened before pursing his lips and snapping in an annoyed tone, "Mel is right. Gifts are just a formality. If it really bothers you that much, I'll just compensate you with one later. But with so many people present right now, you'd better not make things difficult for me." He shrugged my hand off his shoulder, his eyes full of warning. "I was just kidding." Melissa's eyes curved in a smile as she smoothly went on, "Don't take it so seriously, Selina. Let's continue with the games, alright?" After losing a round of dice, she urged Hayden to drink on her behalf, her body plastered against his back like it was the most natural thing in the world. When playing Truth or Dare, she was dared to kiss a person of the opposite gender. She didn't even hesitate before turning around and kissing Hayden right on the lips. Hayden flushed all the way to the tips of his ears and scolded her with a grin, "Hey, watch it!" With a pout, Melissa retorted, "What? What's wrong with two best friends kissing each other? Selina doesn't seem all that bothered about it! Right, Selina?" I heard her smug thoughts almost immediately. [As if she would dare to kick up a fuss in front of so many people! I bet she's bursting with frustration!] Once again, everyone's gaze was on me. I let out a soft laugh. "You already kissed him, so what's the point of asking me about it now?" Meeting her gaze head-on, I added, "Or could it be that you're waiting for me to say that it's fine?" The smile on her lips froze, and she subconsciously grabbed Hayden's arm tightly. I found her behavior more repulsive than outright provocation. An awkward silence spread in the room. Her eyes reddened, though she pretended to be unaffected. "Selina, I really didn't mean anything by it. It was just a game! Don't overthink it." With that said, she withdrew her hand as though she had been hurt by my words but was still putting on a strong front, fully playing up the pitiful act. In her mind, however, she was mocking me. [Go ahead and continue pretending! Let's see who Hayden cares for more!] Hayden instantly frowned deeply and turned to bark at me, "Selina Grant, do you have to be so mean? Mel has always been this straightforward! She doesn't have any ulterior motives!" "Is that so?" I tilted my head to look at him. "So she's using my boyfriend to prove how straightforward she is?" "It's just a game! Do you have to take it so seriously?" Hayden practically yelled at me. "When did you become so petty?" How utterly ridiculous. I had always thought that he was just loyal to his friends and simple-minded. Only now did I realize that he was just pretending to be ignorant. He was greedy, wanting to have his cake and eat it too. The others quickly tried to smooth things over. "Melissa is just playing around. Don't mind it too much." "Hey, now. There's no need to argue over something so insignificant, Lina. Show a little respect, okay?" "We all know you're not the type to keep score over every little thing…" Hayden glared at me, his hands curled into fists so tight that his knuckles had gone white. He was this angry and hostile toward me, all for the sake of a woman who was supposedly just "one of the boys". Once upon a time, he would drink on my behalf and shield me behind him as he took on anything and everything for me. Now, however, he was treating me so coldly, so harshly, all because of Melissa. A sense of helplessness slowly spread through me. This relationship was rotten to the core. For a moment, I simply met Hayden's furious gaze, not saying a word. Then, I turned and left, pointedly ignoring the sound of him gently comforting Melissa behind me. Chapter 3 It was pouring outside, so I hailed a cab to get home. Suddenly, I recalled that Hayden hadn't taken an umbrella when leaving the house earlier today. A tangled web of emotions swirled in me and fed my frustration, but I still couldn't shake the habit of worrying over him just yet. "Forget it," I told myself. "I already endured this for the past three years, didn't I?" In the end, though, I still spoke up. "Sir, could you turn the car around please? I need to pick up someone." Yet, as I stood there in the pounding rain, I failed to see any sign of Hayden. All I saw were his friends as they left the building, chatting with each other. Forcing a smile onto my face, I approached them and asked, "Where's Hayden?" Immediately, their expressions turned rather awkward before one of them answered me. "Hays was worried about Mel getting a cold from being in the rain since she hadn't brought an umbrella, so he took her home." I froze in surprise. Realizing that something was off with me, they hurriedly tried to soothe me. "Selina, weren't you already on your way home?" "No need to panic, Selina. Hays is just taking Mel home. You know how close those two are, but in the platonic way, of course." "That's right. If they really were interested in each other, would Hays have gotten together with you?" "Don't be angry at them, okay? There really is nothing going on between them…" By this point, I was practically soaked through, my teeth chattering from how cold I was. In the end, I sought shelter at the entrance of a nearby hotel and dialed Hayden's number, unwilling to give up just yet. The phone rang for quite a long while before he picked up. "Hello? Lina, are you home already? Mel had a bit too much to drink, so I'm taking her home first." "Thanks, Hays! You're the best! Sorry, Selina, but it looks like I'll have to hog your driver for now!" With that, he ended the call abruptly, not even giving me a chance to respond. [There, all set.] My surroundings were incredibly quiet, so I heard the thought loud and clear. Chapter 4 Wasn't Hayden driving Melissa home? Could it be that they hadn't gone far? At that moment, more of Melissa's thoughts reached me. [Hays obviously cares for me more, considering how he can't bear the idea of even a drop of rain getting on me. As for Selina? Ha! She can continue standing in the rain! Serves her right! I'm sure she'll lose her mind when she sees my lipstick smeared across Hays' collar!] A cold breeze swept past me, chilling me to the bone. My head buzzed. I thought back to years ago, when Hayden first started his career. At the time, I spent three entire months eating nothing but plain bread with him, saving money to help him pay off his debts. When he suffered from gastritis, I searched the entire city in the middle of the night for a pharmacy that was open to buy him medicine. When his parents fell ill, I was the one who took care of them and handled all the dirty work. Not once did Hayden help out or spend the night by their bedside, looking after them. He kept saying that Melissa was just a really good friend, one of the boys, and I had always believed him. I believed that he was just incredibly loyal to her as a friend, that he was just busy, and that he would always return home to me. I believed that three years of effort and devoting myself to him wholeheartedly would earn me at least a modicum of sincerity from him. Even when he came to see me less and less, even when he remembered all of Melissa's likes and dislikes but forgot that I was allergic to mangoes, even when he spent the day by his "friend's" bedside on our anniversary, I still believed in him. I made excuses for him, lying to myself over and over again, until I finally carved myself into an understanding figure in his eyes. And then I started to hear Melissa's wicked gloating. I called Hayden's number again while I walked around in search of his car. "Where are you?" "Didn't I tell you that I'm taking Mel home?" Hayden replied impatiently. Melissa's thoughts came to me immediately. [This woman is so troublesome. But then, in the car earlier…] The thoughts paused briefly, taking on a hint of satisfaction. [Hays' lips were so soft…] At last, in a corner of the hotel's underground parking lot, I watched from afar as Hayden headed toward the lift with his arm around Melissa's waist. My hand holding the phone trembled faintly, and it took everything I had to sound calm. "Yeah. Have you reached her home yet?" The call ended abruptly. I stared as the lift doors closed, and the number on the elevator panel climbed higher. A few seconds later, it finally stopped on the 6th floor. Chapter 5 Worried that I would accidentally tip them off about my presence, I climbed the stairs to the 6th floor, huffing and panting all the way. At last, I arrived on the 6th floor. My eyes instantly went to the end of the corridor, where Hayden had Melissa pinned against a room door as he kissed her. His hand slipped under her blouse, drawing a soft moan from her. "Hays… Don't… Selina will be furious if she finds out… The room key card is in my pocket… Hays, hurry up…" Hayden's hands fumbled across her body in search of the key card. With his entire body pressed against hers, he failed to see me standing on the other end of the corridor. I was frozen to the spot, feeling like all the strength had been sapped from me. My heart pounded like a drum, beating so hard that it felt like my entire chest was throbbing with pain. This was his so-called "just a friend". And this was the so-called "home" he was taking her to. Hayden finally managed to find the key card and swiped at the door. The moment it opened, he tumbled into the room, his hands never once leaving Melissa's body. Right before the door shut completely, Melissa suddenly turned and looked right in my direction, a victorious smile curving her lips. [Do you see? Hayden has always been mine. Every time he says he's working overtime, he's actually with me.] Her thoughts blared through my mind, the words cutting deep into my heart. My mind went blank at the realization that she knew I was there and had deliberately put on this whole show for me. I stared at the tightly shut door in a daze, not even knowing when I turned and left. One hour later, I was already back home when I received a call from Hayden. However, it was Melissa's voice that came over the line. "Selina, could you come pick up Hays? He drank too much and keeps calling out for you." I didn't speak, and after a second of silence, Melissa continued, "Oh, don't misunderstand, Selina. It's just… Hays threw up, and I can't move him by myself… Should I send you the location of the hotel?" Instead of answering, I hung up on her. I sat in the darkness for a long time, not bothering to turn on the lights or even move. As it turned out, there really was no sound when someone died of heartbreak. Eventually, I got up and began packing all of Hayden's belongings into boxes. At four in the morning, I received yet another call from Hayden's number. My heart skipped a beat, but after a moment of hesitation, I still answered the phone. "Lina…" His voice sounded slurred, as though he really were drunk. "Mel told me that you're angry… Don't be angry… I really did drink a bit too much… You know that she's just a good friend to me…" "Hayden Potter." He stopped speaking when I cut him off. "I've already packed up all your belongings. Find the time to come and take them away." There was a brief moment of silence before he spoke, sounding a lot more sober than before. "What do you mean by that?" "It's over between us. Take your things and go." "Seriously? Just because I drove Mel home? I've been looking out for her all these years and think of her as just one of the boys. Could you stop letting your imagination run wild?" "One of the boys?" I laughed softly, though I couldn't stop the tears from welling in my eyes. "Hayden, be honest with yourself and answer this—do you truly think of her as just 'one of the boys', or is she a backup? Or do you just enjoy this sort of ambiguous relationship?" "What nonsense are you spouting?" he abruptly roared. Melissa's voice drifted over the line as she urged with fake sincerity. "Hays, don't speak to her so harshly." "Fine! Selina Grant, you'd better not regret this!" After hanging up, I lifted my head and gazed at myself in the mirror, noting the lack of expression on my face. Only my red-rimmed eyes gave away how I truly felt. Chapter 6 As I expected, Hayden didn't come home that night. After that, I blocked him across all social media platforms and even his number. Noticing that, Hayden asked his friends to pass messages to me, saying I was being unreasonable, selfish, and had disappointed him and betrayed his trust. Over time, the atmosphere at the company changed inexplicably. The way my colleagues looked at me became sharper, more critical, while soft undercurrents of gossip flowed among the clacking of keyboards. "She even wants to control normal interactions between people of the opposite sex? Isn't that being too petty and insecure?" "Forcing Hayden to choose between her and Melissa? How could she do that? They've been friends for so many years!" "I know, right? Mel is such a nice person. As if she could ever have any bad intentions!" I merely buried myself in my work, not responding to their words. It wasn't until I checked my phone later that day that I noticed the department group chat was in an uproar. Some people claimed I was using my seniority to throw my weight around and force Hayden to cut off all contact with other women, while others berated me for letting my personal life affect the project's progress and the team's work. One of my colleagues even secretly sent me a screenshot of a trending post on the company forum, which accused me of being emotionally unstable, a control freak, and abusing my authority to try to force a marriage, only to fail. I recognized the original poster as Melissa, though it was her subsidiary account. My hands shook with rage at the realization, and I immediately posted the photos I had taken of her and Hayden kissing in the hotel corridor the other night. My intention was to clarify that he was the one who cheated on me first, yet all that got me in return was even more mockery, especially since both of them denied it. Hayden even went as far as to say, "That's just how it looks with that camera angle. I was simply helping her walk to her room." Melissa took it one step further, crying pitifully as she bemoaned how tragic her situation was to anyone who would listen. A small crowd surrounded her, attempting to comfort her. "I really don't know how I offended her. Why would she spread such horrible lies about me?" When she raised her gaze and spotted me in the doorway, something flashed in her eyes, and she put on an even more aggrieved act. [See? Who do you think everyone believes in more, you or me? So what if you slept with Hays? Do you seriously think you're his real partner?] Standing there, I felt as though I had plunged into icy water. The only thing Hayden did was send a casual message in the group chat. "Everyone, focus on your work and stop spreading rumors." Not once did he step forward to protect me or even clarify the situation. In the end, I was suspended, seemingly for no reason. Two days later, the HR department suddenly summoned me back to the company for a meeting. When I walked into the building, even the receptionists and security guards were glaring at me. It was just my luck that I happened to run into Melissa and Hayden, who were chatting happily with smiles on their faces. Upon seeing me, Melissa was momentarily surprised, but then she put on a worried look. "Are you okay? I heard that you were temporarily suspended…" Hayden frowned as he asked me impatiently, "What are you doing here?" I opened my mouth, but I couldn't seem to find the words to speak. At that moment, Melissa's thoughts reached me once more. [How stupid. Do you seriously think that a few rumors are enough to get you suspended? From the very beginning, it was Hays pulling the strings behind the scenes. He secretly replaced the report you stayed up all night working on with fake data. Otherwise, at most, you would've just received an official warning.] Before I could process that, Hayden shot me a chilly stare. "Just how long do you plan on causing a fuss? The entire company thinks that you're nothing but a joke now! You might not be embarrassed, but I certainly am!" However, instead of answering, I demanded, "Why did you change the data for my report?" Hayden froze in surprise, but then he frowned and feigned confusion. "What data? What are you talking about?" By this point, I was so enraged that even my voice was shaking. "Hayden Potter, just how much more are you hiding from me? Don't think that I'm in the dark about you and Melissa purposely setting me up! You secretly switched the data for my report so that I'd be suspended!" Just then, a man's voice called out calmly, "Selina?"
