My mother gained access to an exchange system the year I turned eighteen. She swapped my college entrance exam scores with my sister, Poppy's. She swapped my high-paying job for Poppy's, too. She even wanted to swap my perfect boyfriend and hand him over to Poppy. However, she had no idea that I had deliberately found him at a wife-killer club. When my boyfriend suddenly fell for Poppy and fell out of love with me, I smiled. I had been waiting for this day for a long time. Chapter 1 After work, I got a call from Mom. "Elisa, come home for dinner tonight. Poppy’s getting engaged. Come meet your future brother-in-law." I lifted my head from the mountain of documents on my desk. Finally, the moment I had been waiting for was almost here. My sister, Poppy Hart, immediately grabbed the phone. "Elisa, bring your boyfriend too. I saw him in your post. His side profile looked so hot! Bring him home so we can all meet him." I agreed and asked my rich boyfriend, James Porter, to come with me. James was good at handling social situations. Knowing we were meeting my mom, he showed up with expensive gift baskets and premium health supplements. In comparison, my future brother-in-law, Ralph Gardner, came up short. He had brought normal stuff like wine, dessert, and flowers. At dinner, Mom and James hit it off, discussing everything from international news to social trends. The conversation flowed easily. Ralph was quieter and could not contribute to their conversations, but he was attentive to my sister and kept putting food on her plate. Poppy kept a stony expression the whole time. She clearly was not happy. After dinner, James and Ralph both left. I cleaned up the kitchen and headed to my sister's room to chat with her, only to overhear her complaining to Mom. "Mom, look at how amazing Elisa's boyfriend is. He's gorgeous, loaded, and so articulate! The gold bracelet and necklace Elisa is wearing were definitely from him. "Unlike Ralph! He's so cheap. Look at what he brought: chicken and more meat. It's so embarrassing! I wish James were my boyfriend instead." I stood outside the door and smiled, listening to my sister complain. Just as I expected, the second she saw my boyfriend, she wanted him for herself. For once, Mom actually scolded her. "You should stick with Ralph and stop getting such ideas! Ralph may be frugal, but he's honest and straightforward. "The Gardners' neighborhood is getting demolished for redevelopment. Ralph is an only child. Once you marry him and pop out a kid, all that compensation money and those new apartments will be yours!" Poppy was still unhappy. "But Ralph isn’t as good-looking as James, and he's nowhere near as charming." I almost laughed. Before I brought James home, Poppy had been perfectly content with Ralph. The moment I showed up with James, she immediately turned on him. Maybe she was not even interested in James himself and just wanted whatever belonged to me. After all, taking my things had been a habit of hers since childhood. Mom was about to continue lecturing her when I pushed the door open and cut them off. "Poppy, James and I are planning a trip overseas next week. Want to come along with Ralph? "Don't worry about money. James knows Ralph's family is struggling financially. He said he'll cover everything." Poppy shot Mom another look before turning to me. "Elisa, is James's family really that wealthy?" I nodded. "Yeah. His parents work abroad, and he grew up rich. His personal assets are worth close to nine figures." Poppy's eyes lit up immediately. "God, I'm so jealous. You landed a guy who has everything. How did you two even meet?" My smile widened slightly. "We met through work. Poppy, you're gorgeous. I bet you could find someone even better than James." Hearing this, Poppy brightened and shot Mom a triumphant look. "See, Mom? Even Elisa agrees Ralph isn't good enough for me!" Mom exhaled sharply. "Elisa, out. I need to talk to your sister." I nodded and left. Judging by the look on Poppy's face, she had taken the bait. Chapter 2 The women in our family had special genes. For generations, Hart women could only give birth to daughters, and those daughters had to take their mother's surname. Only then would they have a chance to inherit the exchange system. This was just a legend passed down among the Hart women. I never imagined Mom would actually inherit the exchange system. The first time I realized something was wrong was after my college entrance exam results came out. I had always been an excellent student, but I only scored 700 points. Meanwhile, my sister Poppy, who had partied for three years straight, scored 1350. Poppy became the biggest underdog story that year and was interviewed constantly by the media. While classmates and relatives showered her with praise, I became a joke. "This is hilarious. The top student only got 700? She must have been cheating on every test before." "She always studied so hard. How did she only get 700? Was the exam really that brutal? I got 1100." "Damn, Poppy really hit the jackpot, though! She can go anywhere she wants now." After listening to everyone mock me, I immediately requested a score review. However, the state examination board came back with ‘no errors found’. I went home defeated and started preparing to repeat my senior year. That summer was torture. Poppy sprawled on the couch, watching TV and eating watermelon. She went on trips around the country with Mom and had packages delivered every single day. She was living her best life. I locked myself in my room every day reviewing material, gearing up for round two of senior year. Poppy loved rubbing it in. "Elisa, you're just not built for standardized tests. You crack under pressure and always bomb the big exams. Just get a job at some factory and call it a day." Whenever Poppy went after me like this, Mom would stop her. Then, she would turn to me with encouragement. "Elisa, don't worry about repeating. You'll do great next year." I thought it was odd that my scores had tanked so much, yet Mom did not seem surprised at all. However, hearing support from my mother, who usually ignored me, made me brush off the weird feelings I had. The next year, I ranked third in the state and got into Whitmore University's finance program. Finally, I could hold my head high. However, Mom insisted I come home after graduation and get a government job. I refused. She cried, threw fits, and threatened suicide. I had no choice but to pretend I was applying for government positions while I was actually prepping for investment banking interviews. After my interview, the professor who referred me said I was a shoo-in. The offer would arrive in a few days. I called Mom to share the news. "Mom, I got it! I have a job!" She sounded thrilled. "Are you sure? Did you really get it?" "Yes, I'm positive! The interview went so well! But it's not..." She hung up before I could finish. I decided to wait for the official offer before explaining everything. I wanted to tell her that investment banking paid incredibly well. A few days later, my guaranteed offer disappeared. My professor told me they had given it to someone named Poppy Hart instead. Furious, I rushed home to confront Poppy. However, I stopped when I heard her and Mom talking. "I swapped your exam scores for you and got you a stable job, too. You'll coast through life now. That makes me feel so much better." Poppy nestled against Mom, grinning. "Mom, you're amazing. I love you so much. Will the last swap be for Elisa's husband?" Mom shook her head. "Of course not. I'll find you a good husband myself. The last swap needs to be saved for emergencies, so you'll have a backup plan when you're in labor or if something terrible happens." Poppy looked even happier. "You're the best. Thank god Aunt Margaret dumped Elisa on you before she died. With her around, I don't have to lift a finger. I’ll just swap everything with her!" Mom stroked Poppy's hair affectionately. Inside the room was a picture of perfect maternal love. I stood frozen in the doorway, ice running through my veins. Fury boiled up inside me. I dug my nails into my palms so hard that I nearly drew blood, barely keeping myself under control. This was the ugly truth. The woman I called ‘Mom’ was actually my aunt. She had an exchange system that she could use three times, and she had already stolen my exam scores and my job. Chapter 3 She still had one swap left. I could not risk tipping her off. I did not go inside. I turned around, went back to school, and immediately started interviewing at other companies. Along with my new investment banking offer came a furious call from Mom. "Elisa, what's going on? Didn't you say you got a government job? What's this about an investment banking offer?" I played dumb. "Mom, I didn't apply for government jobs. I interviewed at an investment bank, but I didn't get in. Did a bank send an offer to your email? Is it my offer? "Mom, can you show me?" Mom snapped, "It's not yours!" Then, she hung up. I stared at my phone and laughed. Who cared if she swapped the offer? Poppy would probably fail horrendously before her probation period ended. Back when Poppy used my scores to get into a top university, she could not keep up with the coursework at all. She failed multiple classes and nearly flunked out. Mom only managed to get her a degree by bribing every professor and academic advisor she could. After graduation, Poppy could not find work anywhere. She moved back home and mooched off Mom. After bumming around for a year, she suddenly got an offer from a top investment bank. She could not handle the fast pace of corporate life at all. Sure enough, after three days on the job, she came home and quit. She refused to work, and Mom was perfectly happy to support her. As for me, knowing they had one swap left felt like the sword of Damocles over my head. I constantly worried about when and how they would use it on me. It was like a ticking time bomb that could go off at any moment and destroy my life. I needed that bomb to detonate on my terms, within my control. From then on, I made a point of casually mentioning good things that happened to me. Things like I won $500,000 in the lottery or I bought myself a small condo with my savings. However, Mom and Poppy did not take the bait. Then one day, I overheard Mom setting up blind dates for Poppy. Poppy was unhappy with every single match. I knew my opportunity had come. After careful searching, I finally found James. He was a gift I had handpicked specifically for Poppy, one she would not be able to resist. Chapter 4 A week later, James picked me up in a luxury car. We went to pick Poppy and Ralph up to join us at the airport. The moment Ralph got into the car, he could not contain his excitement. He took countless selfies with the interior. Poppy looked furious. She slapped his phone out of his hand. "Can you stop embarrassing yourself? It's just a car. What's the big deal? You're acting like such a hick." Ralph's excitement vanished after hearing her harsh mockery. He pocketed his phone, sat back down, and did not say another word. At the airport, James went to find his friends, while Poppy leaned over and whispered in my ear. "Elisa, did James rent this car?" I shook my head with a shy smile. "He just bought it. His old sports car couldn't fit all of us." Poppy looked skeptical. "I don't mean to be rude, but how did someone like James even fall for you? You're not feminine at all." Because of my job, I always dressed in business attire and had developed a no-nonsense management style after years of leadership. Apparently, to Poppy, this professional appearance meant I had no femininity whatsoever. I smiled and did not respond. Ralph spoke up instead. "Poppy, how could you talk to your sister like that?" Poppy kicked him. "Whose side are you on? Don't tell me you're into my sister now." Ralph's face turned bright red instantly. "No! She's your sister. How could you even think that about me?" While the two of them argued, James and his trust fund friends were already walking toward us. "Wow, she's gorgeous!" "So this is the beauty who landed our boy James!" "No wonder James has been MIA lately. He's been keeping her all to himself!" Sweet talk was second nature to James's crowd. Even though we had never met, they immediately started praising me and played up James's status. Once they learned Poppy and Ralph were my sister and her fiancé, they made polite conversation for a few minutes. Poppy pulled me aside again and whispered in my ear. "Why are all of James's friends so hot? Are they loaded too?" I sneered internally but kept a smug smile on my face. "They have some money, sure, but none of them are as wealthy as James. He's the real deal when it comes to being a trust fund kid." I could not let Poppy shift her target to anyone else. After all, James was the only one I had painstakingly found from the wife-killer club. Chapter 5 On the plane, James's friends were intensely curious about me and asked me a barrage of questions. We chatted about everything under the sun. Suddenly, Ralph let out a scream. Poppy snapped at him irritably. "What are you doing?" Ralph looked terrified. "There's thunder and lightning! What if it hits us? I don't want to die!" One of James's friends laughed. "Relax, man. If the weather was really that bad, the plane wouldn't have taken off in the first place. Planes have lightning protection systems. You'll be fine, don't worry." Poppy looked mortified. "This is so humiliating!" Ralph, completely oblivious, just laughed it off. "Hey, it’s my first time flying. Cut me some slack." A little while later, a flight attendant came by with the meal cart. Ralph perked up with interest. "Excuse me, how much for one of these meals?" "Sir, meals are complimentary on this flight." Ralph brightened and grabbed meals for all of us before asking, "Can I get two more? I eat a lot, and one serving won't be enough." The flight attendant remained patient. "I'm sorry, sir. If there are extras after everyone's been served, I'll bring some over." After she left, Ralph turned to Poppy enthusiastically. "That flight attendant was really nice. I'll ask her to bring you a blanket in a bit. I saw they have drinks too. They're probably free! Want one?" Poppy's expression darkened. "Enough, Ralph. Can you stop acting as if you've never been anywhere before? Are you starving or something? Why do you need so many meals?" Even someone as easygoing as Ralph understood that Poppy was embarrassed by his behavior. He deflated, and the atmosphere between them turned awkward. James's friends jumped in to smooth things over and changed the subject. "Elisa, when we land in Capdo, James has a surprise for you!" I knew what it was. James was planning to propose. Sure enough, on the hot air balloon we got on shortly after landing, James got down on one knee. His eyes were full of tenderness. "Elisa, marry me." James's friends cheered around us. Looking into his eyes, I almost believed I had found real happiness. However, Poppy suddenly rushed forward, shoved past me, and snatched the ring from James's hand before I could react. James's expression darkened. He stared at Poppy coldly. "What are you doing?" Poppy called Ralph over. "Ralph, you took that jewelry class in college, right? Is this diamond real?" Ralph took the ring and examined it closely. "Wow, look at how clear this is! The clarity, the color… This is top tier! James, this ring must have cost a fortune, right?" James did not respond, but his friends spoke up. "Elisa, James went through a lot of trouble to get this ring at auction." "Come on, you know James wouldn't give anyone a fake." Ralph picked up on their sarcasm and quickly tried to defuse the situation. "No, no, we're not saying it's fake. Poppy just wanted me to see a real diamond up close. Don't take it the wrong way." Poppy yanked the ring out of Ralph's hand and scrutinized it closely with wide eyes. James's voice turned icy. "What? You still think it's fake?" Poppy seemed to snap out of it. She reluctantly tossed the ring into my hand. "Lucky you." I gave James an apologetic smile. "My sister is young and immature. Don't take it personally." James smiled warmly at me, took the ring from my hand, and knelt down again. "Let me propose one more time. Elisa, I love you. Will you marry me?" I nodded sweetly and let James slip the ring onto my finger. Chapter 6 After getting off the hot air balloon, we returned to the hotel, where an elaborate proposal setup was waiting. Poppy stormed ahead angrily while Ralph trailed behind, trying to appease her. James and I walked at the back with his friends. Honestly, I could not blame Poppy for looking down on Ralph. What kind of man was so cheap? This entire trip, James and his friends paid for everything: food, activities, flights, and hotels. Ralph had not contributed even a single cent. He even tried to piggyback off James's proposal setup for me. Right after I accepted James's diamond ring, Ralph got down on one knee in front of Poppy with a soda can pull tab. "Poppy, this place is so romantic. Will you marry me?" James's friends cracked up at the scene. "Is this guy for real? He mooches off everyone else's food and fun, and now he's mooching off someone else's proposal?" "This is better than reality TV. What, you can't afford your own moment?" "I've never actually seen someone propose with a soda tab. That's a new one!" James laughed. "Hey, love on a budget can be sweet too, right?" Hearing their mockery, Poppy looked utterly humiliated. She shoved Ralph's hand away, crying and cursing at the same time. "Get away from me! I don't want to be with you! You're so humiliating. Just leave! We're over!" James and his friends were getting quite the show and laughed even harder. Poppy ran off in shame. I followed her. The moment Poppy reached the hotel, she pulled out her phone. "Mom, I don't want to be with Ralph anymore! He's too embarrassing!" Hearing Poppy's tearful complaints, I stopped in my tracks. Everything was going according to plan. Back in my room, I finally let my guard down. James was in the bathroom showering. I opened his phone, and the screen displayed a group chat called ‘Wife-Killer Club’. What James said in there was completely different from his outward persona. His nickname in the group was ‘Never Misses’. Never Misses: [Boys, my proposal succeeded today. I’m ready to execute the wife-killing plan soon!] His friends chimed in. [Holy shit, bro! You're incredible. Didn't you just finish with your last one not too long ago?] [You're an inspiration to us all!] [Got any videos? Let us see how it's done!] [Bro, have you got any tips? Teach us!] Never Misses: [Throw money around! I've already spent hundreds of thousands on this dumb b*tch. Today's proposal ring alone was worth six figures.] Never Misses: [I throw money everywhere. What woman can resist that?] Never Misses: [But this woman's loaded too. After I get rid of her, I'll make bank. I'll send you all a little gift when the time comes.] I heard movement from the bathroom. I quickly deleted the chat history and put his phone back where it was. James came out of the bathroom, still damp, and wrapped his arms around me. "Babe, I'm so happy I get to marry you. Just thinking about holding you like this every day makes me too excited to sleep." His hands started wandering, but my phone rang abruptly and interrupted him. I got up, pointed at the phone, and mouthed, "It's my mom." I had just stepped into the hallway and answered when Mom's harsh voice came through. "Elisa, I let Poppy go on this trip with you, and this is how you treat her? You bullied her?" I was baffled. "Mom, how did I bully her?" "Then why were you all laughing at Ralph?" I rubbed the bridge of my nose, exhausted. "James set up that proposal for me, then Ralph jumped in afterward to propose to Poppy. How do you think that makes Ralph look? How does it make Poppy look like? How does it make me look? "I think Poppy's right. Ralph isn't good enough for her. Mom, your taste is terrible. Poppy deserves someone better." The moment I finished speaking, Poppy hugged me from behind, crying pitifully. "Elisa, you think Ralph isn't good enough for me too, right?" She snatched the phone from my hand. "Mom, this is all your fault! I don't like Ralph. You're the one who forced us to be together. We'll never be happy. "I already broke up with Ralph. I will never get back together with him. Even if every man on earth dropped dead, I still wouldn't be with him!" After she finished yelling, the door to the room across from us opened. Ralph walked out with a dark expression. "Fine. I get it! We're done. You can stay and have fun. I'm going home. I’ve got livestock to deal with back at the farm." After Ralph left, Poppy visibly brightened. She had a blast skiing and enjoying the hot tub with the rich boys. "James, seafood again? I hate seafood!" At another group dinner, Poppy complained to James as the waiter brought out a large seafood platter. James paused. "Your sister likes it." Poppy glared at me furiously. I pretended not to notice and gave her a shy smile. I linked my arm through James's. "You're so good to me. I'm so lucky." Poppy angrily scraped her fork across her plate, making an awful screeching sound. After dinner, James shot me a meaningful look. I hesitated for a moment. Then, I exchanged a bashful glance with Poppy before following him out. Poppy tried to follow, but someone stopped her. "Read the room, will you? They want alone time. Why are you following them?" I did not turn around, but I knew Poppy's eyes were filled with jealousy. Chapter 7 Not long after the trip, James started pressuring me to go home with him. "I can't wait to marry you, babe. I'm dying to make you my wife." More like dying to kill me! I shivered. I decided to turn up the heat on Poppy. I made sure to bring James home while Poppy was there. I even invited all our aunts and extended family over to meet my boyfriend. James showed up with expensive gifts and health supplements that instantly won everyone over. Compliments flowed freely. "In our whole family, Elisa is the most accomplished. She was brilliant in school, excels at work, and even her boyfriend is top tier." "Exactly! James is such a catch. He's perfect for our Elisa!" "I have to say, your mom raised two amazing daughters. I heard Poppy's engagement is settled too, right? How's that going?" Poppy's expression darkened. She looked at Mom with reddening eyes. Mom sighed. "Unfortunately, Poppy and the Gardner boy weren't a good match. He was too reserved. It just didn't work out." One of the nosy aunts chimed in, "Maybe James knows some nice young men he could introduce to Poppy." Poppy looked at James shyly. James actually seemed to consider it. "What about Leo?" Leo Jones was one of James's buddies from the trip. He was average looking, kind of chubby, and awkward. Poppy shook her head. "No. Leo's not as good-looking as you." James raised an eyebrow and pulled me close with a laugh. "Not many guys can compete with this face. Anyway, I'm already taken by your sister!" After dinner, all the aunts left. I cleaned up the kitchen and once again heard Poppy whispering with Mom in her room. "Mom, you still have one swap left, right? I want Elisa's boyfriend. "Mom, please help me one more time!" This time, Mom was firm. "No. James is too exceptional. You can't handle him. Have you forgotten what happened with that job?" Poppy threw a tantrum. "How can you say that? I'm your blood daughter. Why don't I deserve the best? Elisa gets everything, yet I can't even get a good boyfriend? "You don't even love me!" Their voices grew louder. James stirred on the couch. I had deliberately gotten him drunk earlier. He was not leaving tonight. I had him lie down on our couch. I poured him a glass of water and set it on the coffee table before heading back to my room. I ran into Poppy on her way out. She looked at James lying on the couch in obvious discomfort. "Elisa, you're making James sleep out here?" I nodded. "He drank too much. He reeks! The couch is fine." I calmly returned to my room and pulled up the feed of the security camera I had installed in the living room a while back.
